Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel visited the Cu Chi Tunnels in Ho Chi Minh City on Saturday morning, as part of his official visit to Vietnam from November 8 to 10. Paying a visit to the historic site was the first activity of President Díaz-Canel’s agenda in the southern Vietnamese metropolis on Saturday. The Cuban leader and the First Lady saw a documentary on the tunnels at the site. They were also invited to have a taste of Cu Chi’s signature dishes, cassava and rice balls, and briefed on Vietnamese soldiers and their weapons during the American war in Vietnam. The president and his spouse wear traditional hats and scarves during their visit. Located about 60km from downtown Ho Chi Minh City, the Cu Chi Tunnels were previously built by Vietnamese soldiers as shelter from U.S. troops during the war in Vietnam. Ho Chi Minh City Party chief Nguyen Thien Nhan is currently in Germany on a trip meant to offer insight into partnership opportunities and expand cooperation between the two sides. The visit is part of Nhan’s business trip to Europe scheduled for May 19 to 26. Nhan, secretary of the municipal Party Committee, commenced his trip with a visit to the Embassy of Vietnam in Germany shortly after landing in Frankfurt on Wednesday afternoon (local time). The trip is meant to seek out ways to bolster cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City and the European country in such fields as the digital economy, vocational training, and the building of smart urban and financial centers, Nhan said during a meeting at the embassy. Dr. Jill Biden, wife of U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, arrived in Hanoi on Sunday and took part in many social activities, as part of her visit to Vietnam to highlight women’s empowerment. The U.S. Second Lady’s visit is the second stop on her four-country business trip to Asia, which lasts from July 16 to 23, to engage government and civil society partners in issues related to economic empowerment and educational opportunities for women and girls, the White House said in a press release on Saturday. The four countries include South Korea, Japan, Laos, and Vietnam. Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc left Hanoi for Singapore on Tuesday morning to attend the 33rd ASEAN Summit that is scheduled to commence on the afternoon of the same day. PM Phuc and his spouse will participate in the summit and related high-level meetings from November 13 to 15 at the invitation of Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, according to the Vietnam News Agency. They are also accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Binh Minh, Minister and Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung, and Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh, along with other senior officials.
