Five people were killed when a 10-storey building in Iran’s southern city of Abadan partly collapsed and rescuers were trying to help at least 80 people left trapped under the rubble, Iranian state TV reported on Monday. The semi-official Mehr news agency identified the building as a residential-commercial property on Amir Kabir street in the city, which is close to the border with Iraq. State TV said emergency teams were being dispatched from other cities to help with the rescue operation, with two teams of rescue dogs, a helicopter and seven rescue vehicles already at the scene. It showed footage of angry Abadan residents shouting slogans against the city authorities. The head of Khuzestan province’s judiciary has ordered an investigation into the building’s collapse, and its owner and the contractor who built it have been arrested, state TV said. Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy
Of the things Donald Trump has said since he began hinting at a presidential candidacy, the one that most requires challenging is his assertion that people keep asking him to run. Journalists are vigilant defenders of truth when the subject is President Obama's birthplace or OPEC prices. They are credulous when it comes to explaining populist movements. They assume the impetus always comes from the demand side. People are "fed up"! There is an "anti-incumbent sentiment" in the air! Such demand-side sentiments can explain a lot—but not why certain members of the public might wish to be governed by a billionaire yahoo. For that, it is just as important to look at the supply side. Trump's candidacy comes from a sociological fact—the steady rise of plutocracy over the last quarter century—as well as a public sentiment. The truth is not universally enough acknowledged that a man in possession of a good fortune must be in want of political influence. Diversifying one's portfolio to include … [Read more...] about Donald Trump and the Rise of Plutocracy
Rare Nine-legged Octopus Discovered by Japanese Fisherman Just as He Was Boiling it for Dinner
An octopus typically has eight legs, as its name suggests. However, a rare octopus was discovered in Japan, one with nine legs. It is reported that a fisherman was making his dinner when they discovered the creature boiling in the pot had nine legs. The incidence is from Shizugawa Bay in the town of Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture. Since the discovery, scientists have claimed the extra leg could be an anomaly generated when the octopus was trying to regrow a lost limb. It was too late to save the octopus, but it has been made a display feature at Shizugawa Nature Center for the public to view. The reddish creature is a just over 15 centimetres; a little longer than the small sized ruler found in a student’s stationery collection. Kazuya Sato, who cultivates wakame seaweed in the town, found the octopus among four others caught in his trap. He gave the catch to his mother, who started boiling it for dinner. Japan and other coastal countries usually have a high consumption of these … [Read more...] about Rare Nine-legged Octopus Discovered by Japanese Fisherman Just as He Was Boiling it for Dinner
Quinta Brunson explains why there won’t be a shooting episode of ‘Abbott Elementary’
Quinta Brunson, the creator and star of “Abbott Elementary,” is shocked that fans of the show are asking her to write an episode about school shootings. Brunson, 32, took to Twitter on Wednesday — just one day after a gunman entered a Texas elementary school classroom and killed 19 children and two teachers — to question why viewers are reaching out to her — and not their elected officials — to address the mass shootings. “Wild how many people have asked for a school shooting episode of the show I write,” wrote Brunson in a series of tweets. “People are that deeply removed from demanding more from the politicians they’ve elected and are instead demanding ‘entertainment.’ I can’t ask ‘are yall ok’ anymore because the answer is ‘no,’” she continued . “please use that energy to ask your elected official to get on Beto time and nothing less. I’m begging you,” she went on , referring to Texas gubernatorial contender and gun control advocate Beto O’Rourke. “I … [Read more...] about Quinta Brunson explains why there won’t be a shooting episode of ‘Abbott Elementary’
