A CHRISTIAN school assistant has been sacked after she protested against transgender issues being taught at her own son's primary. Kristie Higgs, 43, vented her frustration on Facebook about the use of two kids’ books - which could prompt discussions about sexual orientation - at her son's school. The mum-of-two wrote on Facebook: “They are brainwashing our children! We say again, this is a vicious form of totalitarianism aimed at suppressing Christianity.” After one email complaint about her post, Mrs Higgs was fired from her role as a pastoral assistant at Farmor's School, in Fairford, Gloucestershire. A disciplinary panel found she was guilty of gross misconduct for using language which demeaned its gay, lesbian and transgender pupils. It was decided that there was “potential” for the school's reputation to be harmed after Mrs Higgs’ post attracted a complaint. The row erupted after Mrs Higgs shared an article on Facebook that blasted two books - … [Read more...] about Christian school assistant, 43, is sacked after protesting against transgender issues being taught in son’s primary
The government has been accused of "mishandling" its approach to transgender issues by a senior Conservative MP. Maria Miller, chairwoman of the women and equalities committee, said many trans people do not have access to basic healthcare - something her committee had raised with ministers three years ago.The former cabinet minister said the focus should be on improving service provision, rather than reforms to the legal recognition process."Many trans people simply don't have access to the basic healthcare that the rest of us take for granted - things like cervical smears are often things that trans men are not able to access," she said."(The provision of services) seems to have somewhat been eclipsed by an announcement by the Government on the Gender Recognition Act - that was one of our recommendations, but only one of 33."Mrs Miller described the focus on legislation as "wrongheaded", adding: "There has been very little headway made on that and indeed even on the area the … [Read more...] about Government accused of ‘mishandling’ approach to transgender issues
The Trump administration is facing backlash for reportedly considering defining a person’s gender as the one identified at birth based on genitalia. According to the New York Times which released the story Sunday, it would be “the most drastic move yet in a governmentwide effort to roll back recognition and protections of transgender people under federal civil rights law.” The piece goes on to point out that “the new definition would essentially eradicate federal recognition of the estimated 1.4 million Americans who have opted to recognize themselves — surgically or otherwise — as a gender other than the one they were born into.” In response, Danica Roem, the first openly transgender member of the Virginia House of Delegates, tweeted a link to the Times report and wrote: “Singling out and stigmatizing … [Read more...] about Report: White House considers narrow definition of gender, threatening transgender protections
WHEN it comes to gender identity there are a whole host of terms that activists acknowledge. But a key notion is respect, as campaigner Jane Fae stated: "Ask politely, listen to what individuals have to say and respect what they tell you. It's a principle and an approach to life that will take you a long way - and not just with the transgender community." What does the term transgender mean? It is generally used as an umbrella term for people who view their gender as being different from the gender they were born with. Gender in this sense is more than mere chromosomes but an internal sense of self being either male or female, or even some fluid sense that doesn’t fully fit either category. Gender can also be expressed externally through things like clothing, behaviour and body characteristics. There is no official estimate of the size of the transgender population in the UK but a study by the Gender Identity Research and Education Society, funded by the Home Office, … [Read more...] about What does transgender and transsexual terms mean and why was Robbie Williams’ X Factor comment considered transphobic?

The organisation said that “simply being transgender does not make someone more of a safeguarding risk than any other person” after its inclusion of people who self-identify as female came under attack. In a joint statement, chief guide Amanda Medler and chief executive Ruth Marvel said much of the criticism had been “inaccurate, aggressive and counter to the values we hold dear” and they wanted to “set the record straight”. Earlier this month, two leaders had their membership withdrawn after they publicly objected to elements of Girlguiding’s equality and diversity policy. “In the last few days you may have seen that Girlguiding’s equality and diversity policy has been … [Read more...] about Girlguiding rejects criticism of transgender policy
