Russia Wants to Build a Rail Bridge to Japan, Linking Tokyo to Europe

World Russia Japan Vladimir Putin Shinzo Abe Russia wants to strike a deal with Japan to build a 28-mile bridge between the two countries that could link Moscow to Tokyo by land and rail. The project has repeatedly come up in discussions between officials from the two countries. During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s previous term, the Kremlin greatly intensified its outreach to the world’s third biggest economy. Putin reignited speculation about the long-rumored project last year, when he announced that a land link between Russia and Japan would have “planetary” significance. Brutal hours aren’t just for salarymen: Japanese monk sues temple for overwork

Now, a Buddhist monk who works at a temple on the famed Mount Koya is suing his employers over his heavy workload, saying the early starts and late nights have made him depressed. The 46-year-old monk has been unable to work for the last two years, and is now seeking $78,000 in damages. "The problem with working at a temple is that there's no work-hour management and there are no records how many hours the man actually worked," his lawyer, Noritake Shirakura, told The Washington Post. He declined to name his client or make him available for an interview, citing his depression. "The man is hard-working and earnest, and treated all of his duties as part of his training," Shirakura said. Two killed as huge typhoon slams into Japan

At least two people were killed as the storm disrupted land and air travel and left thousands stranded. Jebi, reportedly the strongest typhoon to make landfall in Japan since 1993, headed north across the main island of Honshu towards the Sea of Japan. It was off the northern coast of Fukui on Tuesday evening with sustained winds of 78mph and gusts up to 110mph, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. A man in his 70s died apparently after being blown to the ground from his apartment in Osaka prefecture, while a 71-year-old died when a storage unit collapsed on him, officials said.
