Road safety measures are urgently required to protect Worthing children travelling to and from school, according to parents and staff. A petition signed by more than 600 people has urged West Sussex County Council to implement a number of measures in the roads close to Thomas a Becket Junior School. In particular it is calling for measures to protect children as they cross St Lawrence Avenue and Wiston Avenue on their way to and from school.Jo Gilham, a parent governor at the school, explained how both were ‘extremely busy roads’ used as cut-throughs for rush-hour traffic moving from one side of the town to the other. She said: “Often drivers are in a hurry, sometimes inattentive and occasionally aggressive – not wishing to stop for children standing precariously on the edge of the kerb. Students in Bangladesh want safer roads, and they're heading into their second week of protests demanding just that. The movement was sparked by the deaths of two students who were run over by a bus. Those protests started out peaceful but turned violent as police and a pro-government group tried to gain control. "It's basically like this: If you protest against this, your life is in danger. If you protest for this, your life is still in danger. We spoke to two students who joined the protests early on. Now, dozens of protesters have been hurt by tear gas and rubber bullets over the past few days. Journalists have also been targeted. The students we talked to asked that we protect their identities. By Shannon Tompkins, Houston Chronicle Updated 11:00 am, Thursday, May 24, 2018 A team of Texas game wardens this past Saturday evening began the somber work of investigating a fatal boating accident and searching for the body of the victim. A 26-year-old woman aboard a party barge on Lake Travis took a tumble from the vessel’s upper deck, falling into the popular reservoir on the Colorado River upstream from Austin about 7 that evening. She was not wearing a personal flotation device — a life jacket — and may have hit her head during the fall. She didn’t surface after hitting the water — water that, at that spot on Lake Travis, is 100-140 feet deep and where, as of last report, game wardens had not yet been able to locate or recover her body. It was the first day of National Safe Boating Week, an annual effort among state and national boating groups and marine law enforcement agencies to try raising awareness of safe boating practices and boating … [Read more...] about Lake Travis death underscores importance of following boating safety measures
