London: Next time you spot a spider in your bedroom, don't panic, as scientists say one of their species may actually help boost a man's libido. A single bite from the Brazilian wandering spider has been shown to have side-effects including four-hour long erections. Now, researchers at the Medical College of Georgia in the US found that the toxins in the arachnid's venom contains a possible breakthrough for erectile dysfunction, the Daily Mail reported. The eight-legged creature -- also known as the armed spider, banana spider or Phoneutria nigriventer -- is found in South and Central America. Dr Kenia Nunes, a physiologist at the college, said: "The venom of the Phoneutria nigriventer spider is a very rich mixture of several molecules. "These molecules are called toxins, and then we have various toxins in this venom with different activity. "Because of this, when a human is bitten by this spider, we can observe many different symptoms including priapism (or persistent … [Read more...] about Spider venom may be the new Viagra

Guns in paradise: Ruling could undo strict Hawaii carry law
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 29 HONOLULU (AP) — Megan Kau takes occasional weeklong hunting trips to the Hawaiian island of Lanai, where she enjoys watching the sunrise and hearing the distant rustle of deer and mouflon sheep in the tropical wilderness, a rifle ready at her side. As a gun owner, she also goes to shooting ranges several times a year. Those outings are the only times the attorney and Oahu native sees others with guns in this tourist mecca where strict laws make it harder to purchase firearms and restrict carrying loaded guns in public. Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning New York's concealed weapon law will likely change things in Hawaii, too, where it's now highly unusual to see people carrying loaded weapons in public. ‘India, Russia should have direct trade and investment agreements’
As Russia’s access to its traditional markets of exports and imports are hugely limited following its Ukraine invasion and the subsequent sanctions, Moscow is looking to develop new trade and investment relations with partners in Asia, including India, China and Southeast Asian countries, said Russian aluminium tycoon Oleg Deripaska. Speaking on the sidelines of 25th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF), also known as the ‘Russian Davos’, Mr. Deripaska, founder of RUSAL, one of the world’s largest aluminium producers, said there’s an understanding that “the new normal” would fundamentally change Russia’s economic reality. To facilitate such a shift, he said, Russia needed to create the same kind of infrastructure as it had built over the 12 years, from 1991 to 2003, with Europe. This includes setting up new logistics routes and related infrastructure, customs procedures, trade agreements, infrastructure for settlements, gaining access to debt capital markets and … [Read more...] about ‘India, Russia should have direct trade and investment agreements’

Kashmiris go Online for life partners
Srinagar: Kashmiris have increasingly started turning to the world-wide web to find matches for their sons and daughters as traditional ways of arranging marriages have become a time-consuming and expensive affair. Many Kashmiri men and women have registered themselves on matrimonial sites on the Internet after facing problems in finding a decent match using the good old traditional way of engaging a marriage broker. "The best thing about matrimonial sites is that you have a wide range to choose from and the process is almost anonymous as nobody in your neighbourhood or relations knows about it," says a candid 27-year-old dentist Sanaa who has registered herself on one of the country's leading matchmaking sites. Another reason for choosing the Internet, she says, is that the sites charge nominal fees when compared to marriage brokers in Kashmir, who have become a "huge liability" considering the expenses associated with marriages. Abortion ruling will impact globally, health organizations warn as some activists emboldened
The Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will have lasting repercussions for women’s rights across the world, medical associations and rights providers warned, as abortion opponents appeared emboldened by the ruling. Criminalizing abortions would not prevent them, but make them more deadly, a spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Friday. “A staggering 45% of all abortions around the world are unsafe, making this a leading cause of maternal death,” a statement by the United Nations sexual and reproductive health agency read. The World Health Organization also tweeted Friday that access to safe abortion care was “essential” and removing it would “put more women and girls at risk of illegal abortions and the consequent safety issues that would bring.” WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus tweeted that he was “concerned and disappointed” by the ruling. He said it reduced both “women’s rights and access to health care.” The … [Read more...] about Abortion ruling will impact globally, health organizations warn as some activists emboldened
Defiant Boris Johnson Baulks at Calls to Resign After By-Election Losses
LONDON (AP) – A defiant British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was in a stubborn standoff with his frustrated Conservative Party on Saturday, after two thumping special election defeats renewed calls for a major change of government direction. Johnson dismissed the defeats as predictable mid-term blues, and said people expecting “some sort of psychological transformation” from him should know “that is not going to happen.” The prime minister told the BBC said he believed “voters are heartily sick of hearing about me and the things I´m alleged to have done wrong. What they want to hear is what we’re doing for them.” “What I want to do is to get on with changing and reforming and improving our systems and our economy,” he said. Despite the bullish tone, this is a perilous moment for Johnson, who is due to be out of the U.K. until Thursday at a Commonwealth meeting in Rwanda, a Group of Seven leaders’ gathering in Germany and a NATO summit in Spain. Simmering concerns about … [Read more...] about Defiant Boris Johnson Baulks at Calls to Resign After By-Election Losses
Protein Study Could Pave Way for New Multiple Sclerosis Therapy
Scientists in Germany are cautiously optimistic about new multiple sclerosis therapy possibilities after decoding the functions of two crucial proteins. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disease in which the insulating covers of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord are damaged. There is no known cure, and treatments attempt to improve function after an attack and prevent new attacks. Almost 3 million people globally suffer from MS. Now, researchers at Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, have announced a breakthrough in the investigation of the proteins Tenascin C and Tenascin R. MS is the most common demyelinating disease, or illnesses of the nervous system in which the myelin sheath of neurons is damaged. This damage impairs the conduction of signals in the affected nerves. The reduction in conduction can cause deficiency in sensation, movement and cognition. The myelination process requires the migration, proliferation, and differentiation of so-called oligodendrocyte … [Read more...] about Protein Study Could Pave Way for New Multiple Sclerosis Therapy
Overweight children “more prone to Alzheimer’s decades later”: Study
Children who are obese are more prone to dementia decades later, according to new research. Obesity increases the risk of cognitive decline in middle age - which can lead to full-blown dementia. The finding is based on more than 1,200 people tracked for over 30 years , starting when they were in school. "Developing strategies that improve low fitness and decrease obesity levels in childhood are important because it could contribute to improvements in cognitive performance in midlife," said lead author Professor Michele Callisaya, of Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. "Importantly the study also indicates protective strategies against future cognitive decline may need to start as far back as early childhood, so the brain can develop sufficient reserve against developing conditions such as dementia in older life." Dementia cases worldwide will triple to over 150 million by 2050. With no cure in sight, there is an increasing focus on lifestyle factors that reduce the … [Read more...] about Overweight children “more prone to Alzheimer’s decades later”: Study
