Israel President Isaac Herzog told the global leaders, in Davos, at the World Economic Forum (WEF) Annual Meeting that he envisions a 'renewable' Middle East that embraces a new paradigm of tolerance, dialogue and trust. "Together, we can shape not only a new Middle East but a renewable Middle East," he said in a special address late on May 25. "... A renewable Middle East that is sustained by its own positive momentum, joint infrastructure and shared technologies for improving the world," he said. He added that the region can serve as a global hub of sustainable solutions in food, water and health, and as a source of energy, mostly solar, to Europe, Asia and Africa. Israel also produces natural gas from its offshore gas fields and is preparing to increase export capacity in the coming years. "Let us harness this momentous shift to foster interpersonal dialogue, people to people, heart to heart," he said. "By working with all countries of the region, we have an opportunity to … [Read more...] about Israel President calls for ‘renewable’ Middle East shaped by trust

Secretary of State Blinken to China: You Want to Compete? Bring It On!
A week that began with the world wondering if the U.S. and China were inevitably headed to war over Taiwan took a different turn Thursday thanks to a speech delivered by Secretary of State Antony Blinken at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The concerns about looming conflict came on Monday when President Biden indicated that the U.S. would use military force to protect Taiwan from a potential Chinese attack . While Biden and his team quickly sought to clarify that the U.S. was not backing away from its policy of “strategic ambiguity” regarding Taiwan—arguing that what the president meant was that he was merely reiterating a long-standing commitment “to provide Taiwan with the military means to defend itself”—his remarks triggered a tough response from the Chinese, who asserted China maintained “the strong resolve, determination, and capability” to defend its “national sovereignty and territorial integrity.” As a consequence, interest was high in Blinken’s … [Read more...] about Secretary of State Blinken to China: You Want to Compete? SBI expects GDP growth to dive below 3% in Q4, 2021-22
India’s GDP growth in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2021-22 could be as low as 2.5% to 2.9%, State Bank of India (SBI) economists have estimated, almost half the 4.8% growth projected earlier by the National Statistical Office (NSO), which will release the official data on May 31. While the NSO’s previous estimate had pegged GDP growth at 8.9% in 2021-22, a report from SBI’s group chief economic adviser Soumya Kanti Ghosh said a range of 8.2% and 8.5% is more likely, with the pace of economic activity slackening in Q4 owing to the Omicron wave and the ‘geopolitical conflagrations’ since February. “Economic activity, which gained strength in Q2 of 2021-22, with the ebbing of the second wave, has lost pace since Q3… the Q4 GDP numbers are expected to be much lower than Q3 [when GDP grew 5.4%] indicating a continuous deceleration in growth since the starting of the year,” the report said, adding that Q4 also marked the resurgence of retail inflation beyond the tolerance threshold of 6%. … [Read more...] about SBI expects GDP growth to dive below 3% in Q4, 2021-22
We must defeat Putin – the fate of civilisation depends on it
Since the last annual meeting of the World Economic Forum, the course of history has changed dramatically. Russia invaded Ukraine, shaking the European Union, which was established to prevent war from returning to the continent, to its very core. Even when the fighting stops, as it eventually must, the situation will never revert to the status quo ante . Indeed, the Russian invasion may turn out to be the beginning of World War III, and our civilisation may not survive it. The invasion of Ukraine did not come out of the blue. The world has been increasingly engaged over the past half-decade, or longer, in a struggle between two diametrically opposed systems of governance: open society and closed society. Let me define the differences as simply as I can. In an open society, the role of the state is to protect the freedom of the individual; in a closed society, the role of the individual is to serve the rulers of the state. Other issues that concern all humanity – … [Read more...] about We must defeat Putin – the fate of civilisation depends on it

Iran seizes 2 Greek tankers in Persian Gulf as tensions rise
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Iran's paramilitary Revolutionary Guard seized two Greek oil tankers Friday in helicopter-launched raids in the Persian Gulf, officials said. The action appeared to be retaliation for Athens' assistance in the U.S. seizure of crude oil from an Iranian-flagged tanker this week in the Mediterranean Sea over violating Washington's crushing sanctions on the Islamic Republic. The raid marks the first major incident at sea in months as tensions remain high between Iran and the West over its tattered nuclear deal with world powers. As Tehran enriches more uranium, closer to weapons-grade levels than ever before, worries mount that negotiators won't find a way back to the accord — raising the risk of a wider war. The Guard issued a statement announcing the seizures, accusing the tankers of unspecified violations. Nour News, a website close to Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, just a short time earlier warned that Tehran planned to take "punitive … [Read more...] about Iran seizes 2 Greek tankers in Persian Gulf as tensions rise
How Broadcom CEO Tan shaped a tech giant through acquisitions
(Reuters) - Once a poor "skinny kid" from Malaysia, Hock Tan was going head-to-head with a legendary U.S. technology mogul for a transformative acquisition. Tan placed a call earlier this month to VMware Inc Chairman Michael Dell, also the chief executive of computer maker Dell Technologies Inc. He proposed one of the biggest tie-ups in the history of the technology sector. Broadcom Inc, the chip maker that Tan leads, was willing to acquire VMware, a cloud software company for $61 billion. For Tan, now 70, the deal would be the culmination of a string of acquisitions that has helped him turn Broadcom into a technology conglomerate worth $225 billion, along the way building a reputation as an astute dealmaker and ruthless cost-cutter. Dell, who personally owns 40% of VMware and controls it together with buyout firm Silver Lake, had a decision to make. Hold out for a better deal or risk losing out as technology stocks plunged amid concerns about a looming economic slowdown … [Read more...] about How Broadcom CEO Tan shaped a tech giant through acquisitions
Blinken Says Global Order Must Survive China But No ‘Cold War’
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called Thursday for vigorous competition with China to preserve the existing global order but said the United States did not seek a “Cold War.” In a long-awaited speech billed as the most comprehensive statement to date on China by President Joe Biden’s administration, Blinken said that Beijing posed “the most serious long-term challenge to the international order” despite months of US focus on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “China is the only country with both the intent to reshape the international order — and, increasingly, the economic, diplomatic, military and technological power to do it,” Blinken said at George Washington University. “Beijing’s vision would move us away from the universal values that have sustained so much of the world’s progress over the past 75 years,” he said. “President Biden believes this decade will be decisive. The actions that we take at home and with countries worldwide will determine whether our shared vision … [Read more...] about Blinken Says Global Order Must Survive China But No ‘Cold War’
Sri Lanka Debuts Phone App to Enforce Gasoline Rationing
The Minister of Power and Energy of Sri Lanka announced on Thursday that the socialist government would implement the use of a mobile phone app to monitor how much gasoline, diesel, and other fuel citizens purchase to prevent hoarding. Minister Kanchana Wijesekara claimed that police nationwide were already testing the app, designed to “share real-time data with filling stations island-wide” so that drivers could not evade national rations, according to Sri Lankan news outlet Ada Derana. The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is currently undergoing an unprecedented economic crisis that has caused shortages of gasoline, diesel, liquified petroleum gas, basic medicines, food, water, and electricity, in addition to nearly every other basic good. Protests against incumbent President Gotabaya Rajapaksa have resulted in the resignation of every member of his cabinet except the president – including the brother and former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and several other … [Read more...] about Sri Lanka Debuts Phone App to Enforce Gasoline Rationing
North Korea Gives Chinese Vaccines, Dubbed ‘Immortal Potion of Love,’ to Soldiers
North Korea is pushing a coronavirus vaccination program for soldiers working on a Pyongyang construction project with a characteristically bizarre propaganda campaign that refers to the Chinese-made shots as an “immortal potion of love” and an affectionate gift from the “Highest Dignity,” a reverential name for dictator Kim Jong-un. Tens of thousands of North Korean soldiers have reportedly been assigned to work on a 50,000-unit housing project in the capital of Pyongyang. The project is supposed to be completed by the end of 2025, but progress was imperiled by North Korea’s first (admitted) outbreak of the Wuhan coronavirus. The solution, according to anonymous Pyongyang officials who spoke to Radio Free Asia (RFA), was to march the soldier-laborers into “field sanitation centers” and shoot them up with lamentably ineffective Chinese vaccines while loudspeakers blasted weird propaganda messages into their faces: “It was like it was a national political … [Read more...] about North Korea Gives Chinese Vaccines, Dubbed ‘Immortal Potion of Love,’ to Soldiers
