Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 27 MEXICO CITY (AP) — Even after five years of living together in the Pacific resort city of Acapulco, something as simple as holding hands or sharing a kiss in public is unthinkable for Dayanny Marcelo and Mayela Villalobos. There is an ever-present fear of being rejected or attacked in Guerrero, a state where same-sex relationships are not widely accepted and one of five in Mexico where same-sex marriage is still not allowed. But this week they traveled the 235 miles (380 kilometers) to Mexico’s capital, where the city government hosted a mass wedding for same-sex couples as part of celebrations of LGBT Pride Month. Under a tent set up in the plaza of the capital’s civil registry, along with about 100 other same-sex couples, Villalobos … [Read more...] about Mass same-sex wedding in Mexico challenges discrimination

Perak’s tourist police to be multilingual

June 24, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my

IPOH: Perak’s tourism police unit will be given basic training in multiple languages to help them converse with foreign tourists. This will be a likely outcome when members of the state’s police officers undergo language courses so they can provide better services when assisting foreigners. “Not all tourists can converse in English,” said Perak police chief Comm Datuk Mior Faridalathrash Wahid. “Some of the unit members would be taught Mandarin, Arabic or French,” he told a press conference after the launch of the Tourism Police Unit and a townhall on safe tourism here yesterday. “The additional languages will make them more efficient,” he said, adding that there were 35 policemen assigned to the unit. Comm Mior Faridalathrash said the unit was reintroduced in preparation for the arrival of more foreign tourists following the reopening of the country’s borders. “We want to let the people know that we have such a unit to assist tourists and also to make them feel safe,” he … [Read more...] about Perak’s tourist police to be multilingual

Tourist’s perplexing Lake District review complains national park has ‘too many’ lakes

June 25, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk

A tourist visiting the Lake District has left a baffling review detailing their time at the stunning national park - because they complained there are "too many" lakes . Many of us will know that the Lake District , in Cumbria, is known - as its name suggests - for its glacial ribbon lakes and being home to several rugged fell mountains, including the famous Scafell Pike. And while hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to the region every year, it seems not everyone leaves the national park - which is the largest in England and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017 - feeling closer to nature, Lancs Live reports . In fact, one tourist recently left a scathing review on the popular site TripAdvisor where they had just one complaint that they wanted everyone to hear - that the Lake District has too many lakes. They told people to 'steer clear' if they find lakes 'unpleasant' (stock photo) ( Image: Getty Images/iStockphoto) Get the news you want … [Read more...] about Tourist’s perplexing Lake District review complains national park has ‘too many’ lakes

At least 11 dead, 33 missing after Agatha’s hit on Mexico

June 1, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Hurricane Agatha left at least 11 people dead and 33 missing in the southern Mexico state of Oaxaca , where it set off flooding and landslides, Gov. Alejandro Murat said Wednesday. More than 40,000 people in the state have been affected, primarily along the coast and in the mountains just beyond, Murat said. Agatha was the strongest hurricane since records have been kept to come ashore in May in the eastern Pacific . It made landfall Monday afternoon on a sparsely populated stretch of small beach towns and fishing villages as a strong Category 2 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph (170 kph), but it quickly lost power moving inland over the mountainous interior. Even as Oaxaca continued to search for the missing and clean up downed trees and flooded homes, Mexican officials were watching another large area of thunderstorms along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatan Peninsula that forecasters said could become a tropical storm later this week. … [Read more...] about At least 11 dead, 33 missing after Agatha’s hit on Mexico

Pfizer says tweaked COVID-19 shots boost omicron protection

June 25, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Pfizer announced Saturday that tweaking its COVID-19 vaccine to better target the omicron variant is safe and works — just days before regulators debate whether to offer Americans updated booster shots this fall. The vaccines currently used in the U.S. still offer strong protection against severe COVID-19 disease and death -- especially if people have gotten a booster dose. But those vaccines target the original coronavirus strain and their effectiveness against any infection dropped markedly when the super-contagious omicron mutant emerged. Now with omicron’s even more transmissible relatives spreading widely, the Food and Drug Administration is considering ordering a recipe change for the vaccines made by both Pfizer and rival Moderna in hopes that modified boosters could better protect against another COVID-19 surge expected this fall and winter. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech studied two different ways of updating their shots -- targeting just omicron, or a … [Read more...] about Pfizer says tweaked COVID-19 shots boost omicron protection

Guns in paradise: Ruling could undo strict Hawaii carry law

June 25, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 29 HONOLULU (AP) — Megan Kau takes occasional weeklong hunting trips to the Hawaiian island of Lanai, where she enjoys watching the sunrise and hearing the distant rustle of deer and mouflon sheep in the tropical wilderness, a rifle ready at her side. As a gun owner, she also goes to shooting ranges several times a year. Those outings are the only times the attorney and Oahu native sees others with guns in this tourist mecca where strict laws make it harder to purchase firearms and restrict carrying loaded guns in public. Thursday’s U.S. Supreme Court ruling overturning New York's concealed weapon law will likely change things in Hawaii, too, where it's now highly unusual to see people carrying loaded weapons in public. US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters

June 25, 2022 by www.news18.com

Police fired tear gas to disperse anti-abortion demonstrators from outside the Arizona Capitol Friday night, forcing lawmakers to huddle briefly in a basement inside the building as they rushed to complete their 2022 session. Thousands of protesters had gathered earlier on the Capitol grounds in Phoenix, divided into groups both supporting and condemning the US Supreme Courts decision overturning Roe v. Wade. SWAT team members with the Department of Public Safety fired tear gas from second floor of the old Capitol building to disperse protesters in the mall between the current House and Senate buildings. KPHO-TV reported the officers opened fire when several anti-abortion protesters started banging on glass doors of the Senate building. Authorities said there were no injuries or arrests. The incident sent Senate lawmakers into the basement for about 20 minutes, said Democratic Sen. Martin Quezada. Stinging tear gas wafted through the building afterward, forcing the Senate to … [Read more...] about US Abortion Ruling: Police at Arizona Capitol Fire Tear Gas, Disperse Protesters

Every parent wants to build a healthy relationship with their child. They want to be their friend, companion and guide in every step. However, sometimes the generation gap doesn’t let them bloom a friendship bond with their kids. Their thought process, upbringing and predetermined norms become a barrier in turning a friend to them. If you don’t want to make your children drift apart, you must stop these habits right away.
