Maryann Struman Detroit Free Press Published 2:11 PM EST Jan 16, 2019 From credit unions to local governments, furloughed federal workers are finding offers of help in Michigan as the government shutdown stretches past its third week, with no end in sight. Michigan credit unions are the latest group to offer assistance, whether it’s formal relief programs or a case-by-case basis, to members and non-members alike. And this week, the city of Ferndale joined Wayne County in offering aid to furloughed workers. Federal employees in Ferndale can receive a two-month extension on city payments, including water bills, permits, parking and taxes for those on the monthly payment plan. The extension will extend for the length of the shutdown plus an additional 60 days after it ends. Ent Credit Union said Tuesday it plans to begin construction this summer on a new headquarters near InterQuest Parkway and Interstate 25 that is designed to accommodate its rapid growth.The Colorado Springs-based credit union, the largest financial institution in southern Colorado, told members Tuesday in an email that it plans to move into the new complex in 2021. Ent is buying land for the headquarters in The Campus at Foothills Farm, just north of the Great Wolf Lodge on the north end of Federal Drive.Ent's current headquarters is spread among three buildings northeast of I-25 and Woodmen Road, after moving there in 2001 from an office building near Peterson Air Force Base. PORTSMOUTHA Portsmouth sheriff’s investigator told a special grand jury Councilman Mark Whitaker treated his church’s credit union as his “own piggy bank” and that it still owed customers $240,000 when it shut down in 2015, according to new court documents.But Whitaker’s attorneys say Investigator Brett Johnson’s testimony last year was false – and that the Sheriff’s Office already had records at the time that proved all of the loans were paid off.The defense asked for Johnson’s testimony and their attack on it to be sealed in the court file. But it wasn’t, giving the public its first glimpse at what witnesses told the grand jurors before they indicted the councilman.Special prosecutor Andrew Robbins and defense attorneys Don Scott and Jon Babineau declined to comment on the court filings.Whitaker, an assistant pastor at New Bethel Baptist Church, is charged with 20 felonies, including identity fraud and forgery.
