The Right’s Obsession With White Birth Rates Inspired the Buffalo Terrorist

May 16, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

When suspected Buffalo terrorist Payton Gendron began shooting Black patrons at the Tops Grocery on Saturday afternoon, he wasn’t just fitted in cosplay military attire and armed with a semi-automatic weapon , he was also armed with the mainstreamed philosophies of the neo-fascist Republican Party . In today’s conservative media and political ecosystems, white men are fed a steady diet of fear that they are being “replaced” and must “take their country back.” These are the two phrases regularly echoed by Fox News and former President Donald Trump . One of the tenants of replacement theory is the fear over white women not having enough babies. The patriarchal traditionalists of the right blame this in part on feminism, for letting such women believe they have the right to earn their own careers rather than just be white, Christian baby-making machines at their men's disposal. How did replacement theory make its way from the fringes to the mainstream? With the help of the … [Read more...] about The Right’s Obsession With White Birth Rates Inspired the Buffalo Terrorist

It’s easy to feel Madison Cawthorn schadenfreude — but he’s right to call those video leaks blackmail

May 6, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

It’s hard to feel bad for someone like Congressman Madison Cawthorn, but the Republican Congressman is right to describe the recent release of a nude video starring him as “blackmail.” In the clip, the North Carolina Republican House member is naked in bed and making thrusting motions on top of another man. Given it comes mere weeks after Politico published photos of Cawthorn posing in lingerie while drinking from a wine glass at a party, it’s easy to guess what each release seeks to intimate about the 26-year-old Congressman. Cawthorn’s response to that particular incident was to merely dismiss it as an “attack from the left” on Twitter and to invite others to post their “most embarrassing vacation photos.” He pumped his chest a bit more when responding to the latest headlines. “Years ago, in this video, I was being crass with a friend, trying to be funny,” the 26-year-old Congressman tweeted after the video clip was released. “We were acting foolish, and joking. That’s it.” … [Read more...] about It’s easy to feel Madison Cawthorn schadenfreude — but he’s right to call those video leaks blackmail

Alito says overturning Roe gives women a voice on abortion. In the South, it’s not that simple.

May 16, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

In his leaked draft Supreme Court opinion, Justice Samuel Alito argues that overturning Roe v. Wade would allow “women on both sides of the abortion issue to seek to affect the legislative process.” If women in a post-Roe era don’t like state laws that restrict abortion access, or laws that preserve the right to have an abortion, Alito envisions a world in which they can step up and change them. Women can vote, he pointed out, and often do so in higher numbers than men. They can lobby and run for office. But advocates for voting access and civil rights say that Alito’s depiction does not account for the parts of the country, particularly in the South, where laws make it harder for the poor and voters of color to cast their ballots, and where racially polarized voting can make it more difficult for abortion rights candidates to gain ground. How states will proceed if Roe v. Wade is overturned May 3, 2022 02:35 Southern states … [Read more...] about Alito says overturning Roe gives women a voice on abortion. ‘Hunt’ On for Shayara Bano’s Husband Since Triple Talaq Verdict

August 23, 2017 by www.news18.com

New Delhi: Ever since the Supreme Court delivered its historic verdict on triple talaq, the Muslim practice of divorce, the media has been trying to get hold of petitioner Shayara Bano's husband Rizwan Ahmed to know his reaction to the judgment. He lives in Allahabad and has managed to evade reporters. "He is not traceable. We are contacting him. His number has been switched off since the verdict," ETV’s Sarvesh Dubey, a local journalist, said. Mohammad Moin, the ABC journalist in Allahabad, is the only reporter who managed to speak to Ahmed after the top court declared triple talaq as unconstitutional. "The moment the verdict was out, I contacted him and he said that he welcomes it. He expressed his desire to not speak further and disconnected the phone," Moin told News18.com. Moin tried to trace Ahmed to the address he was given by the latter last year. "When I reached the spot, I found that nobody by this name lives there. Either he shifted after the petition was filed or … [Read more...] about ‘Hunt’ On for Shayara Bano’s Husband Since Triple Talaq Verdict

January 5, 2022 by koreajoongangdaily.joins.com

Actor Bae Doo-na [NETFLIX] Actor Bae Doo-na, who has worked on Hollywood sci-fi projects such as “Cloud Atlas” (2012) and “Jupiter Ascending” (2015) and television series “Sense8” (2015-18) says that she couldn’t be more proud of her latest work — Netflix Korea’s highly anticipated sci-fi original series “The Silent Sea” which was released on the platform on Dec. 24. Although Netflix Korea has been continuously seeing global success, starting with writer Kim Eun-hee’s “Kingdom” (2019-) series and director Lee Eung-bok’s “Sweet Home” (2020), no one could have anticipated the new wave of attention on Korean content that “Squid Game” would bring. “Squid Game” became the most-watched Netflix content of all time with some 140 million viewers around the globe, while director Yeon Sang-ho’s first Netflix project “Hellbound” debuted at No. 1 on Netflix’s daily list of most-viewed TV shows in the world. Hearing threat to Roe vs. Wade, I thought of my gay marriage — and Jim Obergefell’s fight

May 16, 2022 by www.latimes.com

I’ve thought about Jim Obergefell often since we first spoke nine years ago, after his historic marriage to his husband on an airport tarmac outside Baltimore. He’s come to mind mostly during big moments in my own life as a gay man in America. I thought of Jim and his late husband, John Arthur, when I first considered proposing to my husband, Aaron, and the promises — in sickness and in health, till death do us part — that I’d be making. I thought of Jim and John again when Aaron and I exchanged vows in San Francisco City Hall in 2018, with our families around us and the bust of Harvey Milk nearby . We chose City Hall for its beauty and ease, but could have been anywhere in the country — a right Jim and John won us by overcoming a mountain of obstacles just to reach that tarmac. Advertisement I thought of Jim again last week, around the time I was emailing our lawyers about the next set of paperwork to file in our pursuit of U.S. citizenship for Aaron, who is … [Read more...] about Hearing threat to Roe vs. Wade, I thought of my gay marriage — and Jim Obergefell’s fight

Boy showing up to Black family’s door cracking whip caught on doorbell cam

May 16, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

A boy cracking a whip on the porch of a Black Texas family set off a sequence of events that landed a man in jail. The incident occurred last week in Forney, Texas, and resulted in Bryan Thomas Brunson—the father of the boy with the whip—accidentally firing off a gun in broad daylight. The events were recorded and have since been viewed millions of times on platforms like Twitter , YouTube, TikTok and Reddit . The original video was captured on the family's Ring doorbell camera and showed the boy, who is Brunson's son, marching to a front door and pounding multiple times. He proceeds to use a long whip to "crack" the front door two more times. He then stands still and is visibly surprised when the door opens. "Little boy, you better get your a**...off my porch, beating on my door like this," the woman said . "I will call the police, you need to leave. Don't you ever be on my godd**n door like this. Go." The boy leaves without ever saying a word. Later, a Black man … [Read more...] about Boy showing up to Black family’s door cracking whip caught on doorbell cam

November 23, 2010 by www.thehindu.com

In this second and concluding part of a one-hour interview given to N. Ram at ‘Temple Trees' in Colombo, Mahinda Rajapaksa , Sri Lanka's President, responds to questions about his ambitious initiative for a trilingual Sri Lanka, the role of the English language, the contentious 18th constitutional amendment, the jailing and conviction of General Sarath Fonseka, the status and future of 11,000 hard-core LTTE cadres and supporters, and relations with India. You have taken a special interest in language policy. You have announced a Ten Year Presidential Initiative for a Trilingual Sri Lanka and before that the initiative to promote English. This seems to have been thought out over the long term. How do you see this going? Last year was the Year of English and Information Technology. With that the people started spoken English, they started learning English.
