THERESA May has hailed as the "Brexit Queen" today by a Tory MP who vowed to put up a statue of her in his town when she delivers our EU exit. Brexiteer Peter Bone praised the Prime Minister's decision to follow through with leaving the bloc, and promised his constituents would cheer her on. He told MPs at Prime Minister's Questions today that should she wish, she would be "carried shoulder high through the streets to the echoing of cheering crowds" if she came to visit his area after Brexit. The MP for Wellingborough said he would show he "the sight where a statue to the Brexit Queen will be erected", to which Mrs May replied: "How can I refuse?" And he looked forward to the time when in "331 days, 11 hours, 40 minutes and 22 seconds, the Prime Minister will be leading us out of the European Union... we will stop sending billions of pounds every year to the EU and we'll make our own laws in our own country judged by our own judges." The rendition got him cheers from other Brexit … [Read more...] about Tory MP Peter Bone vows to erect statue honouring Theresa May after she delivers Brexit
News / UK and world by Press Association May 2, 2018, 8:14 am FacebookTwitterLinkedInWhatsAppEmail Sign up to our Daily newsletter Commons Speaker John Bercow is facing calls to quit following fresh bullying allegations. A former private secretary to the Speaker, Angus Sinclair, told BBC Two’s Newsnight that Mr Bercow undermined him by mimicking him, swearing and shouting, and once even smashed a mobile phone by throwing it on to the desk in front of him. The Speaker’s office issued a firm denial of the allegations, which come amid an independent judge-led inquiry into claims of bullying of staff in the Palace of Westminster. Tory MP Andrew Bridgen, a long-standing critic of the Speaker, said Mr Bercow should “consider his position”. He pointed out that Mr Bercow had originally said he would serve no more than nine years in the Speaker’s chair after being elected to the post in 2009. The North West Leicestershire MP told BBC Radio … [Read more...] about Bercow should consider his position over bullying allegations – Tory MP
Theresa May has been warned her government will "collapse" if she does not abandon plans for a post-Brexit customs partnership with the EU. Sixty eurosceptic Tory MPs from the European Research Group, led by Jacob Rees-Mogg, have sent the Prime Minister a 30 page report detailing their opposition to the plan. Number 10 have been directly warned in correspondence that accepting a customs partnership will lead to a "collapse" of the government because it would mean Mrs May cannot deliver a clean break from the EU and would lose the support of Brexiteers. Sources have told the Telegraph that the Tory MPs will consider withdrawing support for Government Bills in Parliament, which would lead to legislative... WITH Amber Rudd no longer in the Cabinet there is speculation she could join the pro-EU awkward squad of Tory MPs trying to block Theresa May's Brexit strategy. The former Home Secretary – and ardent Remainer – might now help to force the Prime Minister into keeping Britain inside a customs union. With a crunch vote looming on the issue next month, Mrs May is aiming to prevent a rebellion which threatens to ruin her key Brexit legislation. After the Government lost a vote in the House of Lords last week to keep the UK in a customs union, she now needs to win a vote in the House of Commons to overturn it. But even with the support of the DUP, she only has a working majority of 13 – meaning that it would take just a small number of MPs to revolt and team up with Labour and other opposition parties to inflict a deeply damaging defeat on her. Whilst she was in the PM’s Cabinet Mrs Rudd would have been duty bound to back the Government’s position that the UK … [Read more...] about Will Amber Rudd join the pro-EU awkward squad of Tory MPs trying to block Theresa May’s Brexit strategy after quitting?
AMID the fallout of Amber Rudd's resignation and Sajid Javid's rise to the post of Home Secretary, James Brokenshire has returned to the Cabinet. It represents an impressive comeback for the Tory MP, who stepped down as Northern Ireland Secretary in January after being diagnosed with lung cancer – here's what you need to know. Who is James Brokenshire? James Brokenshire was born in Southend-on-Sea, Essex, on January 7 1968, and studied at the University of Exeter before working as a lawyer. He became a Tory MP at the 2005 general election, narrowly ousting the Labour incumbent John Cryer from the Greater London seat of Hornchurch. His seat ceased to exist ahead of the 2010 election, so Brokenshire applied to stand for numerous alternatives. After numerous unsuccessful attempts, he was eventually selected for the safe Tory seat of Old Bexley and Sidcup, and won comfortably in 2010. Brokenshire became a minister in 2011, spending three years as Parliamentary Under Secretary of … [Read more...] about Who is James Brokenshire?
