by Matthew Rusling WASHINGTON, May 18 (Xinhua) -- Investors are biting their nails as they wait for the market to hit bottom, so they can scoop up stocks at a discount and make a killing when shares rebound. But it's anyone's guess when the market will bottom out. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged over 1,000 points on Wednesday, after news of a disappointing earnings report from retail giant Target, which sparked yet another sell-off among jittery investors. That news came as savvy, long term investors eagerly await a bottom so they can purchase stocks at a discount, as well as get some clarity on when the market might head back upward. But economists and analysts are far from unified over when a bottom will occur. Desmond Lachman, resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a former official at the International Monetary Fund, told Xinhua the economy is headed for a hard landing that will tame inflation but disrupt the stock market. News Analysis: Americans shell out cash on retail, despite record inflation
by Matthew Rusling WASHINGTON, May 18 (Xinhua) -- After two monotonous years of working from home amid the pandemic, Americans are opening their wallets, going out and spending - despite record inflation. But this may not last. Retail sales, a measure of how much consumers spend on products including food, automobile and gasoline, increased 0.9 percent in April from the prior month, the U.S. Commerce Department reported Tuesday. "The surprisingly robust jump in retail sales is a very good sign," Bernard Baumohl, chief global economist at The Economic Outlook Group, told Xinhua. "I think it's an indication that Americans are still willing to spend, despite the fact that they have shown to be in a dour mood when the confidence surveys are taken," Baumohl said. "The key thing here is to keep an eye on what consumers are actually doing, not how they describe their feelings," Baumohl said, referring to recent consumer sentiment polls that do not track actual spending. The … [Read more...] about News Analysis: Americans shell out cash on retail, despite record inflation

Pakistani billionaire buys fighter jets for Ukraine, his famous wife says
Pakistani billionaire Mohammad Zahoor has given Ukraine fighter jets to aid in their battle as Russia's invasion of the country continues, according to his wife. Zahoor's wife, the Ukrainian singer Kamaliya Zahoor (known professionally as simply Kamaliya), said that her husband and other wealthy friends had been quietly helping Ukraine in its fight against Russia, Ukraine's TSN reported on Wednesday. "[Mohammad] gave me the green light to tell this. Because they hid these [actions]. They gave two fighter jets to Ukraine and help Ukraine," she said during the program Morning with Ukraine . It is not clear when Kamaliya made these comments. Since the Russia-Ukraine war broke out in late February, Zahoor, who used to live in Ukraine and was the former owner of the Ukrainian newspaper Kyiv Post , has been pushing to ensure the safe evacuation of Ukrainian citizens, according to a Khaleej Times report. Prince William and Kate Middleton false break-up story spreads
Prince William and Kate Middleton have been hit by a fake break-up rumor picked up and spread by MSN.com. There is nothing to suggest the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are experiencing marital problems and they appeared happy together during a visit to Scotland on May 11. However, an article on French-language website Oh My Mag wrongly suggested Kate had walked out with the couple's three children, the website's publisher told Newsweek . MSN.com then ran a translation hosted on its own website, while a link to the story was posted to its 227,600 Twitter followers on May 17. Outlandish conspiracies about the British royal family appear in the world's media from time to time but what is notable about this example is the role MSN.com played in giving the story the potential to reach a mass audience in Britain and America. A spokesperson for Groupe Cerise, which owns Oh My Mag , told Newsweek : "This story is indeed false and has been published by accident. We are … [Read more...] about Prince William and Kate Middleton false break-up story spreads
Google Paying More Than 300 EU Publishers for News, More to Come
Alphabet unit Google has signed deals to pay more than 300 publishers in Germany, France and four other EU countries for their news and will roll out a tool to make it easier for others to sign up too, the company told Reuters. The move to be announced publicly later on Wednesday followed the adoption of landmark EU copyright rules three years ago that require Google and other online platforms to pay musicians, performers, authors, news publishers and journalists for using their work. News publishers, among Google ‘s fiercest critics, have long urged governments to ensure online platforms pay fair remuneration for their content. Australia last year made such payments mandatory while Canada introduced similar legislation last month. Ex-sunbed addict left with golf-ball sized hole in face as tiny bump leads to cancer
A tan-loving mum has been left with a golf ball-sized hole and 'Frankenstein' stitching on her face after what she thought was a tiny bump turned out to be cancer. Misty Ovens was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, last month but was left in shock when she saw the results of the surgery to remove it. The mum-of-three said she used sunbeds an average of once a week for 10 years during her youth but became far more vigilant at protecting her skin following a life-changing breast cancer diagnosis in 2011. Misty, 44, is now keen to raise awareness of the importance of wearing and reapplying sunscreen. Misty was left with a hole by her right eye ( Image: Kennedy News and Media) She was shocked to see her own face ( Image: Kennedy News and Media) Misty, of Richland, Washington, US, said: "I felt like I was stitched up like Frankenstein.
