Russian forces occupying Europe's biggest nuclear power plant in Ukraine have reportedly thrown plant workers into the basement. The reports suggest it is unclear who is currently ensuring the safe operation of the Zaporizhzhia plant, which has been under Russian control since March . Up to now, the plant has been operated by its regular Ukrainian staff on rotation, albeit under intense pressure, according to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). However, Dmytro Orlov, mayor of the Ukrainian city of Enerhodar where the plant is located, told U.S. government-funded news outlet Radio Liberty on Tuesday: "People are being taken straight from the nuclear power plant… and they're being thrown into basements." Orlov said there were more than a dozen employees affected. Russia has had nuclear specialists of its own stationed at the plant who were sent there from the country's state-owned nuclear company Rosatom. Nuclear Plant on Fire Amid Russian Shelling, Radiation Levels Steady
Ukrainian government officials report elevated radiation levels near the site of Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, but the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) disagrees for now, saying levels are steady. Shelling caused fire to break out as the Russian military took over the plant, Europe's largest nuclear power plant, that could possibly be even more dangerous than Chernobyl. Russian missile shelling reportedly caused a fire at the power plant. In a video posted online, a blast followed by fire and smoke was seen at the plant. Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine tweeted after the shelling saying if Zaporizhzhia blows up, it will be 10 times worse than the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster. He urged the Russian military to cease fire immediately. Russian officials told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) that they took control of the territory surrounding the plant. In a letter to the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, the Ukraine … [Read more...] about Nuclear Plant on Fire Amid Russian Shelling, Radiation Levels Steady

Gujarat sets up desalination plant for industries in Dahej
For the first time in the country, the Gujarat Industrial Development Corporation (GIDC) commissioned the desalination plant at Dahej, supplying water to industries. The plant was officially inaugurated on June 17, but the government had put the plant under trial stage for a week’s time. This is the first desalination plant of 100 MLD set up by any government in the country. Dahej, a hub of major industries, is rapidly expanding with new industrial units. Currently, the daily requirement of water for the industries in Dahej is around 200 MLD, which is at present fetched from the Narmada river. The industries will now get treated sea water for their use. “From this plant, 100 MLD water will be delivered daily to the industries in the area. The price of 1,000 litres of treated water will be ₹26,” said M. Thennarasan, MD of GIDC. He added that the corporation has invested ₹881 crore for setting up the plant and its infrastructure. A wish list for reform in India’s higher judiciary
Of late, there is a rumour doing the rounds between Raisina Hill and Tilak Marg. Twittering birds have it that the age of retirement of Supreme Court of India judges is to be increased to 67 years, not immediately but come a couple of months. This will fall during the tenure of Justice U.U. Lalit who by seniority is expected to take over as the Chief Justice of India (CJI) on August 27, 2022. Dehors the increase, Justice Lalit would have had two months in the august office; come the amendment, his tenure goes on to November 2024. This alteration in age would affect every successor notably Justice D.Y. Chandrachud who will see delay in his ascension from November 2022 to November 2024. All in all, quite momentous for court watchers. Also momentous for political watchers since the next Lok Sabha election is due by May 2024. Much therefore hangs on age, especially the looks of the Court. Fallout is competition However, there are more important aspects relating to the retirement age of … [Read more...] about A wish list for reform in India’s higher judiciary

At least 1,000 people have been reported dead and hundreds injured on Wednesday after a powerful 5.9 magnitude earthquake rocked Afghanistan with authorities claiming the toll is likely to rise as rescuers find “grave after grave” in a bid to find survivors from collapsed buildings. The quake that majorly hit the eastern Paktika province early Wednesday morning struck hardest in the rugged east, as the country continues to reel under a severe economic crisis and food shortage following the Taliban takeover in August last year. Mohammad Amin Huzaifa, head of the Information and Culture Department told AFP, “people are digging grave after grave,” adding that at least 1,000 people had died in that province alone. “It is raining also, and all houses are destroyed. People are still trapped under the rubble,” he told journalists. Death toll continued to rise, leading the country’s supreme leader, Hibatullah Akhundzada, to warn it would likely rise further. Anas Haqqani, a senior … [Read more...] about Afghanistan Quake: At Least 1,000 Killed as Rescuers Scramble for Survivors; India, UN Offer Help
