As the Centre has decided to ban the use of single-use plastic from July 1, the hill State of Himachal Pradesh is all set to kick-start a buy-back scheme in schools and colleges to purchase the single-use plastic items from students in a bid to instill a sense of environment preservation by ‘catching them young’. Under the novel scheme, the students would be encouraged to bring single-use plastic items from their home and deposit it with the school, for which they will be paid ₹ 75 a kg by the government — the aim to inculcate a habit among the youngsters towards environment conservation. “Across the State, we have 3,000 Eco-clubs in schools and in 100 colleges under the National Green Corps programme — these Eco-clubs are an association of student-teachers that work to inculcate environmental awareness and protection. As a pilot project, we will start the buy-back scheme in 100 schools from July 1. Later, we will scale it up and implement the scheme in all the schools and colleges … [Read more...] about Come July 1, Himachal Pradesh govt. to start buying single-use plastic items from students of 100 schools

Airline, duty-free industries faring poorly amid high exchange rates
Travelers wait to get checked in at Incheon International Airport on Sunday. [NEWS1] Airline and duty-free industries were expected to bounce back as the pandemic waned, but are instead being ambushed by high exchange rates and faring poorly. The closing price of the won-dollar exchange rate exceeded 1,300 won for the first time in 13 years on June 23. Although edging down slightly, it stayed in the vicinity Monday, recording 1,286.5 won. Airlines in particular have to pay aircraft lease fees in U.S. dollars, and therefore have to pay more when the exchange rate rises. In the case of Korean Air Lines, if the exchange rate rises by 100 won, it has to book 410 billion won in foreign currency exchange losses. Low-cost carriers (LCCs) struggle even more due to high exchange rates. Large airlines made a profit even during the Covid-19 pandemic due to the boom in cargo transport. But LCCs, which had to suspend passenger-oriented international flights, were unable to turn in a … [Read more...] about Airline, duty-free industries faring poorly amid high exchange rates
Why rebel Saudi tour players can still play at the US Open despite PGA ban
Golf 's biggest names will reunite at the U.S. Open this week as the sport calls a temporary ceasefire amid the hostilities stemming from the inauguration of the LIV Golf Invitational Series. The controversial, Saudi-funded competition got its start in St. Albans, Hertfordshire, where Charl Schwartzel was the first to pocket one of the £3.86million first-place prizes on offer. He was also one of 17 Tour players participating in the event who was officially suspended by the PGA after teeing off at the Centurion Club. But those names will be permitted to rub elbows with their old colleagues at the Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts this week. That's after the United States Golf Association (USGA) confirmed it does not plan to uphold the PGA's ban against any LIV rebels. That will include those who didn't feature in Hertfordshire last weekend but have announced their intent to join the Saudi-funded breakaway. The 2020 U.S. Open champion, Bryson DeChambeau, and … [Read more...] about Why rebel Saudi tour players can still play at the US Open despite PGA ban

San Francisco archbishop bars Rep. Nancy Pelosi from receiving Communion over abortion rights stance
A long-simmering dispute between San Francisco’s Catholic leaders and the city’s elected officials escalated Friday when a Bay Area archbishop took the extraordinary step of barring House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from receiving Communion over her support for abortion access. The move, occurring just as the U.S. Supreme Court appears poised to overturn Roe vs. Wade, underscores deep divisions among Catholics over the issue. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone told Pelosi in a letter Thursday that she had not offered “an accommodation to my many requests to speak with you again since you vowed to codify the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision in federal law” after a Texas law effectively banning most abortions took effect last year. Cordileone said he had written to Pelosi in April warning her that he was prepared to bar her from receiving Communion. “As you have not publicly repudiated your position on abortion, and continue to refer to your Catholic faith in justifying your position and … [Read more...] about San Francisco archbishop bars Rep. Lorenzo Insigne Penalty Double Takes Napoli Back to Serie A 2021-22 Peak
Napoli made it five wins in five home games this season with a 3-0 victory over Bologna on Thursday to go back to the top of Serie A. Napoli lost their 100 per cent record last weekend with a 0-0 draw at Roma after eight successive wins but Luciano Spalletti’s side were back to their best against Bologna. Spanish midfielder Fabian Ruiz opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a fierce left foot drive which eluded Bologna’s Polish goalkeeper Lukasz Skorupski. Napoli were awarded a penalty in the closing minutes of the first half when Chilean defender Gary Medel was penalised for handball as he challenged Victor Osimhen. Skipper Lorenzo Insigne scored from the spot. Insigne added a second penalty after 62 minutes when Osimhen was fouled. “I missed a few, but I’ve always been ready to take the penalties,” Insigne told Sky Sport Italia. “I’ve never had these problems. Only those who take penalties can miss them. Today, I was calm. “But the only thing that mattered was to respond … [Read more...] about Lorenzo Insigne Penalty Double Takes Napoli Back to Serie A 2021-22 Peak

The Sit-Up Is Over
When I think of a sit-up, my mind flashes immediately to the (carpeted, for some reason) floor of my elementary-school gym. Twice a week, our teachers marched us there for ritual humiliation and light calisthenics, and under the watchful gaze of a former football coach with a whistle perpetually dangling from his lips, we’d warm up with the moves we’d been told were the building blocks of physical fitness—jumping jacks, push-ups, toe touches, and, of course, sit-ups. With rare exception, we were bad at sit-ups. We’d try our best, taking turns leaning on our partners’ toes as they threw their torsos up and forward for a count of 10. But kids are floppy creatures, and sit-ups are an especially floppy exercise. In gym class, our lower backs hunched, our necks strained, and our arms flew away from their cross-chest Dracula pose. Once a year, beginning in elementary school, the Presidential Fitness Test required us to do as many sit-ups in a minute as our little bodies could stand. … [Read more...] about The Sit-Up Is Over
As a TV presenter, I know the secret to Wimbledon
My childhood sporting memories are crystal clear. No, I don’t mean winning the bean bag race in primary school or scoring my first 50 on the cricket pitch. I’m talking about those captivating, inspiring and majestic moments that I watched on free-to-air television. The ones that were mesmerising and still live on in the deep recesses of my brain, etched there, like some kind of beautiful slow motion sporting montage. I remember World Cup USA ’94. Diana Ross missing a penalty in the opening ceremony, Baggio missing the deciding one in the final, Romario, Bebeto, et al – and the little sticker book I had to write all of the results in (and still have tucked away in a box in my spare room). I remember the Grand National in 1996. The excitement of heading home to watch it after I’d been to see Toy Story at the cinema for a friend’s birthday party. Mum and dad had recorded it on VHS so we could all watch it together – and the horse we’d picked won. I remember Atlanta … [Read more...] about As a TV presenter, I know the secret to Wimbledon
