Rahul Gandhi connects Congress workers in UK to Sonia Gandhi
Congress president Sonia Gandhi has called on overseas party workers in the UK to work hard to help the Opposition win the upcoming elections, after Rahul Gandhi connected members of the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC) UK with his mother in a “surprise” phone call during his ongoing London visit . Rahul Gandhi met IOC UK team members on Saturday to discuss party-related matters and listen to their views and concerns. IOC UK President Kamal Dhaliwal and other team members present at the meeting urged him to take over the party's presidency so the Congress can "come into power under his leadership". “In a surprise move, Rahul Gandhi ji connected IOC team members to Sonia Gandhi ji over the phone, during which Ms. Gandhi motivated all the team members to work hard for the party and win the upcoming elections,” IOC UK said in a statement. IOC Telangana team members, spokesperson Sudhakar Goud and general secretary Gampa Venugopal, expressed their gratitude to the party president … [Read more...] about Rahul Gandhi connects Congress workers in UK to Sonia Gandhi
Calcutta HC cancels minister’s daughter’s appointment, directs to return salary
The Calcutta High Court on Friday directed that Ankita Adhikary, daughter of West Bengal Minister of State for Education Paresh Chandra Adhikary, be removed from the post of teacher in a State-run school and also instructed her to return the salary received from the school. Justice Abhijit Gangopadhyay also directed that Ms. Adhikary will not be treated as a teacher and she or any person on her behalf will not be allowed inside the school premises. On May 17, in an order, Justice Gangopadhyay had pointed at irregularities in the appointment of Ms. Adhikary and directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to register an FIR against the minister and his daughter. The FIR was registered on May 19. Justice Gangopadhyay, in his order on Friday, said that the post to which Ms. Adhikary was appointed shall be earmarked for the petitioner Babita Sarkar. Nuggets Journal: If it’s Tim Connelly or Calvin Booth, Denver’s roster still needs fixing
The warts aren’t going anywhere. No matter if current team president Tim Connelly is overseeing the Nuggets or the job is left to presumed successor Calvin Booth should Connelly depart, Denver is on the precipice of championship contention. But they aren’t there yet. The hardest part about the timing of Connelly’s dalliance with Minnesota is that the decisions coming this summer are the ones that might make the difference between maximizing Nikola Jokic’s title window and winning a championship, or not. If it’s Connelly, who’s been at the helm since 2013 and is known for his loyalty, he’d still likely have to make uncomfortable decisions. Those choices might involve Will Barton, the longest-tenured Nugget who’s long been a favorite of Connelly’s, or Monte Morris, one of Connelly’s favorite players in the NBA, let alone Denver. If Connelly is still in charge, upgrading the defense would be a priority and moving one or both of their respective contracts might be mandatory to … [Read more...] about Nuggets Journal: If it’s Tim Connelly or Calvin Booth, Denver’s roster still needs fixing
Furious Brits working 3 jobs blast out-of-touch minister as they share harrowing reality
Tory minister Rachel Maclean yesterday sparked fury in a car crash interview where she suggested Brits struggling for money should work more hours or get better paid jobs. As the cost of living continues to increase, putting more pressure on everyday people to pay for the bills, the “tone deaf” sentiments were slammed by Brits and the opposition party. Talking to Sky News, she said: “I think what we need to focus on now is over the long-term. “We do have these short-term pressures on us that we're all aware of. But over the long-term we need to have a plan to grow the economy and make sure that people are able to protect themselves better, whether that is by taking on more hours or moving to a better-paid job.” Rachel Maclean sparked fury in the Sky News interview on Monday ( Image: Sky) The Prime Minister's official spokesman waded into the row, adding the Home Office Minister was clear “people’s circumstances may vary”. Despite the PM’s support, the comments … [Read more...] about Furious Brits working 3 jobs blast out-of-touch minister as they share harrowing reality
Remembering the angels
E very year, May 12 is celebrated as International Nurses Day. Nurses have always been the backbone of the healthcare sector. Their contribution to patient treatment outcome often goes unacknowledged as in the pandemic. Their services and placement in critical treatment areas are subject to flexible criteria and dynamics of prevalent situations. Nurses have helped and guided me immensely leading up to becoming a neurosurgeon. I had taken a couple of entrance examinations for neurosurgical training in 2001 after graduating as a general surgeon. The results invariably waitlisted me. Having qualified from a small town, I was initially overwhelmed by the weight of clinical exposure of the competition of big-town applicants. An institute in Thiruvananthapuram, where I had applied for neurosurgery residency, required a clinical examination as part of the entrance examination. Having completed the general surgery course in my hometown Mangalore a few months earlier, I had no medical … [Read more...] about Remembering the angels
Explained | Why is Turkey against Sweden, Finland joining NATO?
The story so far: With the Russian invasion of Ukraine nearing three months , Sweden and Finland (SweFin), the two Nordic countries that have historically stayed out of military alliances, have formally applied to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) . If President Vladimir Putin ordered the Ukraine attack on February 24, apparently to prevent NATO’s further expansion into Russia’s neighbourhood, he is now facing the prospects of two countries joining the trans-Atlantic military alliance. But their accession into NATO may not be smooth. Turkey, a NATO member since 1952 , has said it would oppose the Nordic countries joining the bloc, citing that they harbour “terrorist groups” — a reference to Kurdish insurgent outfits. Put together, these developments — the continuing war in Ukraine, fresh NATO applications, and Turkey’s opposition to SweFin’s bid — have shaken up Europe’s delicate security equilibrium further. What explains the long-term neutrality of Sweden … [Read more...] about Explained | Why is Turkey against Sweden, Finland joining NATO?
Analysis | Maharashtra Cong. chief Patole’s jibes at allies put question mark over MVA alliance ahead of civic polls
Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole’s renewed verbal assault against his Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) coalition allies, the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the Shiv Sena, has put a question mark on the three parties contesting the critical Maharashtra civic polls together. Mr. Patole stirred the pot of controversy soon after the Congress’s Chintan Shivir at Udaipur where, by his own admission, he submitted a litany of complaints to the party high command pertaining to the NCP’s consistent ‘betrayal’ of the Congress and its alleged efforts to undermine the party in Maharashtra. The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Chief (MPCC) chief then sternly rebuked Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena for drawing up the three-ward system for the upcoming civic polls without allegedly consulting the Congress. Without directly naming either party, Mr. Patole censured the ‘opportunism’ of both the Sena and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP by hinting that the three-ward arrangement was … [Read more...] about Analysis | Maharashtra Cong. chief Patole’s jibes at allies put question mark over MVA alliance ahead of civic polls

Biden Needs to Fix His COVID Screwups if He Wants to Win Re-Election in 2024
COVID-19 could end up taking down two presidents—the one who was grossly incompetent , and the one who expected to ride a vaccine to victory over the coronavirus. In other words, Donald Trump might very well have been re-elected if he had handled COVID responsibly. And while Joe Biden’s been an improvement, the perception of his management of the pandemic isn’t great, and that could be his undoing. A New York Times analysis of Biden’s decline in the polls from the mid-50s to his current 42 percent reveals that the downward pressure started well before the messy August 2021 exit from Afghanistan took its toll . The slippage in Biden’s numbers, in fact, coincided with the rise of the more transmissible Delta variant and with it, a growing awareness among the public that the administration’s cheery declaration of a post-vaccine “summer of freedom” had turned into something quite different. Biden’s Independence Day celebration was “the domestic equivalent of Mission … [Read more...] about Biden Needs to Fix His COVID Screwups if He Wants to Win Re-Election in 2024
