Delta pineapple farmers suffer losses due to fluctuating prices

VietNamNet Bridge – Many pineapple farmers in Tien Giang Province’s Tan Phuoc District, the largest pineapple planting area in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta, are taking losses because of fluctuating prices caused by an oversupply. A farmer in Tien Giang Province harvests pineapples. — VNA/VNS Photo Nam Thai Nguyen Xuan Hai, deputy head of the district’s Agriculture and Rural Development, said that pineapples were selling for VND2,000–3,000 a kilo. Since mid-year, the price has ranged from VND1,500–5,500 a kilo. With the decline in price, farmers are now suffering a loss of VND10-15 million (US$440-$660) per ha per crop. The fruit has helped many farmers escape poverty in recent years. Tan Phuoc’s Queen pineapples, one of the main varieties in Tien Giang, are well-known for high quality. The district has about 16,500ha of pineapples with an average yield of 20 tonnes per ha per crop. China’s state media expressed concern over growing “nationalism” by “a few Vietnamese radicals” Tuesday after a weekend of anti-Chinese protests swept the nation. Vietnamese officials arrested around 100 people throughout the country this weekend who participated in protests against a draft law that would allow foreign companies to lease Vietnamese land for 99 years, prompting concerns that China would take advantage of the deal to colonizing Vietnamese territory. Construction materials industry to maintain high growth The building materials industry has grown at 8-12 percent in the past three years and is expected to maintain good growth next year, a seminar heard in HCM City on December 26. Pham Van Bac, head of the Ministry of Construction’s construction materials department, said this year most construction materials manufacturers operated at full capacity. Demand for their products was very high, including overseas, with exports accounting for 30 percent of total sales of certain materials. Pham Thiet Hoa, director of the Investment and Trade Promotion Centre of HCM City (ITPC), said: “The construction materials industry has made remarkable progress both in terms of quality and quantity. Occupancy rate of industrial parks reaches 73 percent

The occupancy rate of operational industrial parks (IPs) across the nation hit 73 percent in 2018, the Ministry of Planning and Investment’s Department of Economic Zone Management has said. An aquatic product processing factory in My Tho Industrial Park in My Tho city, Tien Giang province As of the end of 2018, the country had 17 coastal economic zones (EZs) established on a total land and water area of over 845,000ha. In addition, plans have been outlined to build the Nhan Co EZ in Nam Dinh province.  Currently, there are 326 IPs across 63 cities and provinces, 250 of which are operational. The rest are under construction or awaiting land clearance. More than 87 percent of the active IPs had their own waste water disposal plants with a capacity of 950,000 cubic metres per day. The total registered and adjusted capital of the 1,060 foreign investment projects at all IPs and EZs was reported at 8.3 billion USD at the end of 2017.
