When several explosions rattled through the quiet neighborhood near Melreese Country Club last night, startled neighbors pulled out cell phones and started filming. They watched in shock as flames leapt dozens of feet above the pro shop at the city-owned golf course. Miami firefighters rushed in to find dozens of golf carts engulfed in fire. The first responders were able to put out the blaze, but this morning they're left with two obvious questions: How did the gigantic fire start? And if it was intentional, did the fire have anything to do with David Beckham's new plan to build a Major League Soccer stadium on the site? Capt. Data from a recent study show that the use of golf carts has caused significant injuries in children under the age of 17, including brain injuries. Golf carts are somewhat inaccurately named as their use goes far beyond the golf course.Golf carts are used in many communities in addition to golf courses, including retirement communities, farms, and shore communities. In fact, while many golf cart-related injuries do occur on the golf course, up to 30 percent occur on public streets, yards, and farms. In both Pennsylvania and New Jersey, golf carts are exempt from registration requirements. Police are investigating the possibility that a Chicago lawyer who was run over by his golf cart could have been the victim of a homicide.Lawrence Schad died on Nov. 10, three days after the cart ran over him, pinning him beneath it. Police had said he was playing solo when the incident occurred in suburban Skokie, Ill.Now a police spokesman says authorities haven’t ruled out homicide, the Chicago Tribune reports. “Obviously with something of this magnitude we have to cover all angles,” Officer Joe Marzigliano told the newspaper.Schad’s law partner, Stephen Diamond, told the Tribune that the possibility of foul play had crossed his mind. “I only can say that from my experience golf carts don’t start up and run over people by themselves,” Diamond said.
