Swiss lawmaker dropped over Israel remark

· November 30, 2013 ·

World leaders in Geneva following Iran nuclear talks. Photo: AFP A local deputy from Switzerland's populist Geneva Citizens' Movement (MCG) was excluded from the regional party on Friday for appearing to support the destruction of Israel. Denis Menoud wrote on his Facebook page Tuesday that following Iran's historic nuclear deal with the West, "the key thing is that Israel is on thepath to being incinerated." His words caused an immediate outcry, with the Swiss Jewish rights group CICAD demanding the party "make a stand regarding this type of despicableremark." Menoud, who later deleted the post from the page, told the Swiss newspaper Tribune de Geneve his remarks had been taken out of context. "The point was the agreement with Iran... Israel is the loser, strategically and politically, from this plan. Anything else is a toxic and abusive interpretation," he said. The MCG is increasingly prolific in the Geneva canton, having won 20 of … [Read more...] about Swiss lawmaker dropped over Israel remark

Swiss hail ‘success in failure’ of Scots no vote

· September 19, 2014 ·

No supporters celebrate in Scotland. Photo: Leon Neal/AFP Commentators in Swiss media have called the Scottish no vote “a success in failure” after 55 percent of Scots voted against independence in Thursday’s historic referendum. One of many Swiss papers to splash the Scottish result over its front page, Neue Zurcher Zeitung was full of praise for the independence movement, despite the no vote, saying: “Although the ultimate victory failed, no other separatist movement in Western Europe can boast such achievements as the Scottish nationalists.” Warning of a “neverendum” in which Scottish nationalists will continue to attempt to bring about independence from London, it said “the spirit of separatism cannot be forced back in the bottle”. Tabloid Blick agreed, saying the defeat “represents a great success for Scotland” given the so-called ‘devo-max’ powers now promised by British Prime Minister David … [Read more...] about Swiss hail ‘success in failure’ of Scots no vote

Italians angered after Switzerland closes border crossings at night

· April 5, 2017 ·

A Swiss-Italian border point. File photo: David Abercrombie Italy said on Tuesday that it had summoned Switzerland's ambassador after Swiss authorities implemented overnight closures of three small border crossings. Ambassador Giancarlo Kessler said the closure of the border posts in the southern canton of Ticino was an experimental measure to test whether it improved cooperation between the neighbouring countries' police forces, according to a statement from the Italian foreign ministry. The shutdowns would be re-evaluated soon, Kessler added. Italy and Switzerland are both members of Europe's Schengen passport-free zone. Since Saturday, the Novazzano-Marcetto, Pedrinate and Ponte Cremenaga crossings have been shut from 11pm until 5am. Switzerland's Tribune de Geneve newspaper reported that the closures were designed to cut cross-border crime, particularly burglaries, and that the measure would be in force for six months. Local mayors on the Italian side of the border -- … [Read more...] about Italians angered after Switzerland closes border crossings at night

Meghan Markle’s wedding gown was beautiful, but the woman wearing it was unforgettable

· May 19, 2018 ·

Robin Givhan, The Washington Post Published 7:05 am, Saturday, May 19, 2018 The dress isn't everything but it is a lot. And the Givenchy haute couture gown chosen by Meghan Markle for her marriage to Prince Harry told a story about contemporary romance, geopolitical history and the institution into which she has married. But mostly, most importantly, it offered a bit of insight into the bride herself. The sleek white gown, with its six strategically placed seams, was stitched from a heavy silk with a subtle sheen. A simple bateau neckline gracefully framed her face. The body of the dress subtly outlined her waist and flowed into a full train. But what was most noticeable were all the things that the dress was not. It was not a Hollywood red carpet statement. It was not a Disney princess fantasy. It was not a mountain of camouflaging tulle and chiffon. The dress, designed by Clare Waight Keller, was free of extravagant embellishments. It was not covered in yards of delicate … [Read more...] about Meghan Markle’s wedding gown was beautiful, but the woman wearing it was unforgettable
