The Rodong Sinmun state newspaper of North Korea published the results of an alleged “investigation” into the origins of the ongoing Chinese coronavirus epidemic in the country on Friday blaming the entry of the disease into the country on “alien things” from South Korea. The communist regime in North Korea spent most of the past two years insisting that it had not documented a single case of Chinese coronavirus in the country, despite its notoriously porous border with China along the Yalu River. The Chinese coronavirus originated in Wuhan, central China, in late 2019 and areas bordering North Korea – such as the Liaoning and Jilin provinces – experienced severe surges in coronavirus cases repeatedly since the pandemic began. While China has officially documented fewer coronavirus cases than South Korea – Seoul has as of press time over 18 million coronavirus cases – extensive reporting and admissions by Chinese officials indicate that the Communist Party of China has … [Read more...] about North Korea Blames South Korea — Not China — for Coronavirus Outbreak

Students decry cumbersome online-offline class mix-match
Students walk on campus at Chungbuk National Universtiy in Cheongju, North Chungcheong, on March 2. [YONHAP] Twenty-two-year-old Kim Su-min has a dilemma. For some of her college courses, she has to leave the room every time she wants to speak out. Ironically, that’s the only way she can be heard. Kim has a mixed timetable of in-person and online classes this semester, which means that on some days, she has both. On those days, Kim goes to her school, Kyung Hee University in Dongdaemun District, eastern Seoul, for in-person classes, and attends her virtual classes from the school library. With many other students in the library for the same reason, Kim says she has to move to a less crowded location every time she wants to unmute herself to speak, so as not to disrupt the other students studying online. Despite the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, many universities have refused to again go fully virtual, like in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, instead allowing … [Read more...] about Students decry cumbersome online-offline class mix-match
Retail drug stores in State see business threat from corporate firms
Alarmed by the influx of drug stores backed by big corporates and chains of shops that sell medicines at discounted rates, traditional retail outlets in the State are planning to form local consortiums and adopt latest technology to retain their businesses. The All-Kerala Chemists and Druggists Association (AKCDA), the biggest organisation representing retail drug shops, believes that corporate-backed stores will hit the prospects of its members. This could also render thousands of people in the wholesale and retail sectors jobless. A.N. Mohan, president, AKCDA, said in a letter to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan that the Health department and the State Drugs Controller’s office were found to be helping monopolistic foreign and domestic companies to freely operate in the State. The association alleged that such companies were being given licenses without following norms. The AKCDA wants the authorities to ban boards that display discount rates outside drug stores, which, the … [Read more...] about Retail drug stores in State see business threat from corporate firms
Philippines’ Ressa says ‘business as usual’ despite news outlet’s shutdown order
Philippine journalist Maria Ressa's news company Rappler was continuing to work "as usual", the Nobel Peace Prize winner said on Wednesday, after it was ordered to shut down by authorities ahead of President Rodrigo Duterte's last day in office. Ms. Ressa has been a vocal critic of Mr. Duterte and the deadly drug war he launched in 2016, triggering what media advocates say is a grinding series of criminal charges, probes and online attacks against her and Rappler. The latest blow was delivered by the Philippine Securities and Exchange Commission. In a statement on Wednesday, it confirmed the "revocation of the certificates of incorporation" of Rappler for violating "constitutional and statutory restrictions on foreign ownership in mass media". Rappler said the decision "effectively confirmed the shutdown" of the company and vowed to appeal, describing the proceedings as "highly irregular". But Ms. Ressa was characteristically defiant, vowing the news site would continue to … [Read more...] about Philippines’ Ressa says ‘business as usual’ despite news outlet’s shutdown order

Pensioners forced to pay more for parking as they can’t use technology to book online
The midday sun is blazing down on the car park next to the picturesque harbour at Wells-Next-The-Sea… and on a line of dismayed pensioners standing in front of the pay station. Most of them have arrived with coins ready to pay, but a sign says it’s £6 for two hours by cash, but £1 an hour and £4 all day if they pay online. “I think it’s just wrong,” says a flustered Diane Burton, who is holding a fistful of pound coins. “I’m 75, I don’t know how to do that. “Most older people have mobile phones , but only for making calls, not for paying for things or anything else. They’re making us pay more to park here just because we belong to a different generation.” Diane and Stanley Burton ( Image: Albanpix.com,) Her husband, 79-year-old Stanley, agrees: “We didn’t have computers when I was at school, just slates and beads. I’m completely computer illiterate. “It seems like they’re making it harder for older people, when they really should be trying to make our lives … [Read more...] about Pensioners forced to pay more for parking as they can’t use technology to book online
The Viral Online Challenge Is Never Coming Back
Ten years ago this month, the Harvard men’s baseball team put a video on YouTube in which they danced and lip-synched to Carly Rae Jepsen’s No. 1 hit, “Call Me Maybe.” It was funny because, well, you know: They were muscle-y boys with serious jawlines, and they were doing choreography that involved punching the ceiling of a van; this was back when a lot of people thought that pop songs were really stupid and for girls. So the video got really popular. Then other groups of people started to film themselves doing their own versions of the song: college students in Idaho; the Miami Dolphins cheerleaders ; the U.S. Olympic swim team . Maybe you, too, were inclined to dance and lip-synch to Carly Rae Jepsen’s No. 1 hit, “Call Me Maybe,” with your friends and post it to the internet. This is how one of the first super-viral “challenges” on social media was born. Planking, where people filmed or photographed themselves lying flat—like a plank—in unexpected places, had already … [Read more...] about The Viral Online Challenge Is Never Coming Back
Facing Monthly Indignity: Female Prisoners in Thai Jail Suffer Due to Lack of Sanitary Products
When Tang ran out of sanitary pads while serving time in a Thai jail, the 42-year-old convict bled right through her uniform and all over the white, tiled floor. Lunch was ruined. Tang felt humiliated. That morning, she had expressly asked staff for extra pads, sensing the shame to come, but was told to wait on the say-so of a supervisor. “The officer made an angry face. She asked me why I didn’t purchase any backups, and that the prison didn’t have enough pads,” said Tang, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retribution. “I felt so ashamed that I cried.” Many inmates in Thailand suffer the same monthly indignity as Tang, jailed last year for embezzlement, and are never sure what sanitary products they will get – if any – or when. Last year, Tang said each female inmate at Chaiyaphum Prison, which houses some 2,100 prisoners about five hours north of the capital, got 12 sanitary pads, 10 times less than the 120 inmates are due under an annual quota. Thai … [Read more...] about Facing Monthly Indignity: Female Prisoners in Thai Jail Suffer Due to Lack of Sanitary Products
Bonnaroo, a leader in green fests, faces climate change risk
Since its debut on a rural Tennessee farm two decades ago, the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival strived to be one of the country’s greenest music festivals, investing in recycling, composting, solar energy and other improvements. But last August Tennessee received the highest 24-hour rainfall ever recorded in a non-coastal state, resulting in deadly flash flooding that killed 20 people. Additional rains leftover from Hurricane Ida dumped more water on the area in subsequent days. The Bonnaroo campgrounds were waterlogged and roads impassable, forcing organizers to cancel. Climate experts say festivals like Bonnaroo and similar outdoor live events are more vulnerable than ever to unpredictable and extreme weather. Preparing for those events remains a huge challenge. While man-made climate change has only slightly increased Tennessee's weather, experts predict that the state will experience historically unprecedented warming in this century. Warmer air contains more … [Read more...] about Bonnaroo, a leader in green fests, faces climate change risk
