Around the Blawgosphere: BigLaw, Small-Firm Symbiosis; Living Wills for the Living Dead?

· November 18, 2011 ·

On Rejection and BigLaw’s Rejected CasesMatt Brown, who practices criminal defense at a two-lawyer firm in Tempe, Ariz., put up a post Monday at Tempe Criminal Defense about the experience of having a client leave him “before the real battle started” for another lawyer. While he thinks his now ex-client is in good hands, he wonders: “Will the new lawyer, with his army of associates and staff, be there to fight for bail at 5 a.m. jail court? Will he do the work himself, or will he farm it out and pad the bill to justify partnership? Will it matter? Is that what they want?” He realizes that ultimately, he isn’t going to be who every client wants or needs—even when he has 20 years of experience, someone else will have 50—and he needs to continue to make peace with rejection as it comes along. While it appears that in Brown’s case, his small firm’s client moved to a larger law firm, Miami small-firm lawyer Brian Tannebaum points … [Read more...] about Around the Blawgosphere: BigLaw, Small-Firm Symbiosis; Living Wills for the Living Dead?

Here Is What The 5 Judges Said While Recognizing Passive Euthanasia And Living Wills/ Advance Directives

· March 9, 2018 ·

In a landmark judgment, the Supreme Court on Friday recognized and gave sanction to passive Euthanasia and living will/advance directive. The judgment was delivered by a Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra, Justice A.K. Sikri, Justice A.M. Khanwilkar, Justice D.Y. Chandrachud and Justice Ashok Bhushan.   The matter had been referred to it by a three-Judge bench, which had held that the Constitution Bench, in Gian Kaur v. State of Punjab, had not ruled on the validity of active or passive Euthanasia, even though it had ruled that the right to live with dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution of India was inclusive of the right to die with dignity. The three-Judge Bench had then noted that the judgment in the case of Aruna Ramchandra Shanbaug v. Union of India had rested on the wrong premise that the Constitution Bench in Gian Kaur had upheld passive euthanasia. The five-Judge Bench has now unanimously held that the two-Judge Bench … [Read more...] about Here Is What The 5 Judges Said While Recognizing Passive Euthanasia And Living Wills/ Advance Directives

India bus crash leaves 30 dead – including 27 kids – as vehicle plummets into gorge in Himalayas

· April 9, 2018 ·

AT least 27 children were among 30 people killed when their school bus skidded off a mountain road and plunged into a gorge in the foothills of the Indian Himalayas. The bus driver was speeding and lost control at the edge of the gorge, dropping some 200 feet to the ground below, according to police officer Sunil Kumar. The accident happened on Monday in the Kangra Valley, about 300 miles from New Delhi. Kumar says a rescue operation is continuing after nightfall. India's roads, particularly in the hills, have long been feared for their deep potholes, reckless drivers and, very often, a lack of guardrails. Fatal accidents are common. I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives due to a bus accident in Kangra, Himachal Pradesh. My prayers and solidarity with those who lost their near and dear ones in the accident: PM @narendramodi— PMO India (@PMOIndia) April 9, 2018 Tweeting a statement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: "I am deeply anguished by the loss of lives.
