Safe and Secure Transportation Systems
Cybersecurity executives in the automotive sector must embrace new organizational and product security standards that drive collaboration across the supply chain. Vehicle communication networks such as the controller area network (CAN) are not designed to authenticate message traffic. Now, rapid shifts in technology have introduced hyper-connectivity and automation that must be securely integrated into vehicles. Vehicles now include Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, satellite, cellular, NFC and other communication stacks that enable vehicle-to-vehicle, vehicle-to-infrastructure and personal connectivity. Hardware is integrated in support of advanced driver-assistance systems (ADAS) in order to automate functions and safeguard drivers. Without a holistic approach to cybersecurity across the OEMs and myriad tier suppliers, these integrations cannot happen securely. The automotive industry is now moving toward the adoption of cybersecurity standards that enable OEMs and suppliers to better understand … [Read more...] about Safe and Secure Transportation Systems
A new plan allows electric vehicles to charge using 100% renewable energy
Electric vehicle charging station operator Electrify America has entered into a 15-year virtual power purchase agreement (VPPA) with Terra-Gen. The contract makes Electrify America, a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group, is the largest open network in North America to enter into a VPPA. The agreement will see the parties build a solar photovoltaic renewable energy generation project in San Bernardino County, California. The deal may be extended at the option of Terra-Gen to include a co-located battery energy storage system that would be designed to store energy during lower requirement times, then deliver it to the grid at a later time. According to the California Energy Commissions, solar PV and solar thermal power plants produced 29,450 Gita watt-hours (GWh) of energy in 2021. This was 15.42 percent of California's in-state generation portfolio. There were 771 operation solar power plants tabulated for that year, with an installed capacity of about 14,060 MW. The project, called … [Read more...] about A new plan allows electric vehicles to charge using 100% renewable energy
‘Cyber Hell’ only scratches surface of South Korea’s sex crime crisis
South Korea's ongoing sex crime crisis forms the focus of a gripping new Netflix documentary— Cyber Hell: Exposing an Internet Horror. The latest program reveals just the tip of the iceberg of sex crimes in the Asian country, which can be traced back to a "deep-rooted gender inequality " and an increase in gender-based violence, Boram Jang, East Asia Researcher at Amnesty International, told Newsweek. "According to the Korean Institute of Criminology and Justice, violent crimes such as murder, robbery and arson are generally decreasing in Korean society, but crimes involving sexual violence are steadily rising," Jang said. Released on Wednesday, the new Netflix documentary follows the exposé of a sexual abuse scandal that saw dozens of women—including minors—allegedly being blackmailed into capturing non-consensual , sexually explicit images and videos of themselves. The emergency alert sent out Saturday morning startled many in Los Angeles County when it hit their smartphones with a loud alarm and vibration. “Chevy Chase Canyon residents safely evacuate your home and proceed to evacuation site located at Glendale Community College Parking Lot B,” the alert said. It’s unclear how many got the alert, but it was received by people as far as Long Beach and West Covina. But there was no emergency. The alert was sent in error as part of a preplanned safety drill. A few minutes later, Glendale sent a follow-up: “Disregard safety alert for Chevy Chase Canyon. A miniature car and bike creator from the Nilgiris
It was in 2015 that the then 12-year-old G Roshan first laid eyes on a custom vintage motorcycle at an auto show in Udhagamandalam. “The owner of the motorcycle didn’t let anyone near it, especially children. My interest in designing my own miniature motorcycles and cars stems from that particular incident,” says Roshan, a resident of Udhagamandalam. Fast forward seven years, and Roshan and his father Gorakhnath, otherwise known as Kesavan, have designed a fully functional miniature car and a motorcycle using refurbished engines from scooters. “We used engines from scooters and built the bodywork for the two vehicles using a welding machine and a cutting machine,” says Roshan. Indian Roadmaster Dark Horse: Black beauty on the road
The time is 6 am, and the sun is just about to rise from behind the horizon. There is a nip in the air that is unusual for this time of the year. I am seated on the super-plush seat of the Indian Roadmaster Dark Horse, as its massive 1,890cc V-twin chugs at a relaxed pace. The deep burbles from the twin-exhausts intermix with Coldplay’s riveting music playing through the quad speakers of the 200W music system. I am not sure about the American Dream, but riding a big, American touring machine is an incredible experience that will be etched in my memory for a long time. Here is the reason why: Take a stance To me, the first word that comes to mind on seeing the Roadmaster is ‘elegant’. The enormous fairing is beautifully shaped, with its curves and creases, and since this is the Dark Horse version, it does away with the chrome outline around the LED headlight and the twin aux lights that flank it. Instead, the LED aux lights are placed on the indicators, outside the fairing, which … [Read more...] about Indian Roadmaster Dark Horse: Black beauty on the road
How Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram is promoting Kavyakeli
Lakshmi Das recites eight lines from Kumaran Asan’s poem, ‘Chandalabhikshuki’ , starting with ‘Innale cheythorabadham...’ and posts it as a voice note on a WhatsApp group comprising her students. Within the next four days, they post their renditions in the same group. Lakshmi gives feedback to each of them. That is how Thiruvananthapuram-based Lakshmi has been taking Kavyakeli classes for 30-plus students for a month now. She is among the four experts who are taking lessons in Kavyakeli for more than 130 students under an initiative launched by Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan, a cultural centre in Thiruvanathapuram under Government of Kerala. The initiative was launched on April 15. Different from Aksharaslokam Although Kavyakeli is similar to Aksharaslokam as both entail recitation of Malayalam poems, there are some major differences. In Aksharaslokam, a quatrain with only Sanskrit meters ( vrutham ) are recited, while in Kavyakeli eight lines from a poem with Dravidian meters … [Read more...] about How Vyloppilly Samskrithi Bhavan in Thiruvananthapuram is promoting Kavyakeli
