Adding another feather to her cap, the 32-year old author made Malaysians proud when her debut cookbook Penang Makan was awarded the best in the world under the street food category at the 27th Gourmand Awards in Sweden early this month. Donald Trump backs surefire primary candidates in bid to boost success rate
Donald Trump has given an 11th-hour endorsement to a host of sitting members of Congress on the eve of the next round of Republican primaries. The former president backed candidates hoping to win their respective elections in Utah, Oklahoma and Illinois on Tuesday. While the apparent influence of a Trump endorsement has been the focal point in some GOP primaries, such as J.D. Vance's victory in the GOP Senate primary in Ohio or Mehmet Oz's eventual win in the Pennsylvania Senate primary, the latest batch of endorsements from the current president pose almost next to no risk. As with a large majority of Trump's endorsed candidates in primaries across the country, the former president has backed incumbents, who very rarely lose midterm elections, never mind party primaries. The lateness of the announcements may suggest Trump is attempting to boost the figures on his apparent knack for picking eventual winners in GOP primaries following a recent bout of losses in Georgia . … [Read more...] about Donald Trump backs surefire primary candidates in bid to boost success rate
Rookie on F1 Grid | Raise Your Car or Race Your Car? It’s Lone Wolff vs The Rest in F1’s Latest Civil War
Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport worldwide and has gained a massive following in recent years even in countries that don’t get to roll out the red carpet for racing; India being one of those countries and this author being one of those followers. This column is my attempt to connect with other new fans of the sport and share with them my journey of exploring this fast, furious, and yes, at times, frustrating, sport. Be careful what you wish for. After the back-breaking Baku race made Lewis Hamilton the go-to-meme for millennial health issues, Mercedes drummed up support in the paddock for the FIA to do something about porpoising . The FIA obliged, but its fix may end up biting Mercedes in the rear wing, dragging Ferrari for good measure, working Red Bull into a frenzy. And the Netflix cameras are watching it all. Let’s take it from the top. For the uninitiated, the phenomenon giving porpoises – cute aquatic mammals that resemble dolphins – a bad rep is the vertical … [Read more...] about Rookie on F1 Grid | Raise Your Car or Race Your Car? G-7 leaders confer with Zelenskyy, prep new aid for Ukraine
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 26 ELMAU, Germany (AP) — Leading economic powers conferred by video link with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Monday as they underscored their commitment to Ukraine for “as long as it takes” with plans to pursue a price cap on Russian oil, raise tariffs on Russian goods and impose other new sanctions. In addition, the U.S. was preparing to announce the purchase of an advanced surface-to-air missile system for Kyiv to help Ukraine fight back against Vladimir Putin’s aggression. The new aid and efforts by the Group of Seven leaders to punish Moscow come as Zelenskyy has openly worried that the West has become fatigued by the cost of a war that is contributing to soaring energy costs and price hikes on essential goods around the globe. U.S. … [Read more...] about G-7 leaders confer with Zelenskyy, prep new aid for Ukraine

The Sit-Up Is Over
When I think of a sit-up, my mind flashes immediately to the (carpeted, for some reason) floor of my elementary-school gym. Twice a week, our teachers marched us there for ritual humiliation and light calisthenics, and under the watchful gaze of a former football coach with a whistle perpetually dangling from his lips, we’d warm up with the moves we’d been told were the building blocks of physical fitness—jumping jacks, push-ups, toe touches, and, of course, sit-ups. With rare exception, we were bad at sit-ups. We’d try our best, taking turns leaning on our partners’ toes as they threw their torsos up and forward for a count of 10. But kids are floppy creatures, and sit-ups are an especially floppy exercise. In gym class, our lower backs hunched, our necks strained, and our arms flew away from their cross-chest Dracula pose. Once a year, beginning in elementary school, the Presidential Fitness Test required us to do as many sit-ups in a minute as our little bodies could stand. … [Read more...] about The Sit-Up Is Over
Playful dog halts soccer game after invading pitch for strokes—”Red card”
An international soccer match in Chile took an unexpected turn over the weekend after a pitch invading dog halted play. On Saturday, the Chile women's national soccer team played host to South American rivals Venezuela at the Estadio La Granja, Curicó. A friendly match serving as a warm-up for the Copa América Femenina, the game wasn't exactly action-packed with Chile mustering just one shot on target and Venezuela ultimately triumphing 1-0 thanks to a brilliant Mariana Speckmaier goal eight minutes from time. However, by then, the match's main highlight had already been and gone. That came in the 37th minute when, for reasons still unknown, a dog decided to run onto the pitch. Pitch invaders are nothing new in the world of soccer, but dog interlopers are a little less common. There are myriad reasons why someone may want to enter the field of play. Some do it for attention , others to protest a particular issue. Then are those who simply get carried away by the … [Read more...] about Playful dog halts soccer game after invading pitch for strokes—”Red card”
Matt Fitzpatrick’s Saudi tour stance vindicated after creating his own legacy with US Open win
Just three weeks ago Matthew Fitzpatrick was still rueing a golden missed chance to win a first major title at the PGA Championship at Southern Hills, after narrowly losing out by just two shots. A painful near miss like that can often be a tough one to take, but not one for being knocked down, Fitzpatrick was determined to redeem his misfortune at the next possible occasion. In the midst of his top three finish at Southern Hills, was the ongoing saga surrounding the Saudi-backed breakaway circuit led by ex-world No. 1 Greg Norman, which had sent the golfing world into disarray after luring some of the PGA Tour’s biggest names in Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson to sign up, thanks to a whole host of mega-money leap in the dark payouts. Like the rest of the sport’s elite Fitzpatrick was approached by Norman and his team to join the contentious series - which after months of deliberation, eventually kicked off early this month. For the Englishman though it was an easy decision … [Read more...] about Matt Fitzpatrick’s Saudi tour stance vindicated after creating his own legacy with US Open win
House Republicans’ defense strategy for impeachment hearings reveals flaws: Analysis
House Republicans have geared up for the first public impeachment hearings in the Ukraine scandal, set to take place this week, by having GOP staffers send a memo to lawmakers that outlines the strategy to best defend President Donald Trump. But flaws remain within their arguments, which fail to address some of the damning allegations that Democrats will focus their questions on. The 18-page document details four main points of evidence that Republicans believe "are fatal to the Democrats' allegations" that Trump made an effort to force his Ukrainian counterpart to investigate Democrats and 2016 election interference by withholding foreign military aid. "The July 25 call summary—the best evidence of the conversation—shows no conditionality or evidence of pressure." "President Zelensky and President Trump have both said there was no pressure on the call." In his now-infamous call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, Trump said he "would like you to do us a favor, … [Read more...] about House Republicans’ defense strategy for impeachment hearings reveals flaws: Analysis
