Parents protest replacement of textbooks with tabs

June 24, 2016 by www.thehindu.com

A private school, which had introduced tablets as a replacement for textbooks, withdrew the move on Thursday after a protest by parents. The Sri Chaitanya Techno School at Bannerghatta Road, which follows the CBSE syllabus, had introduced the tablets for students between Classes 3 and 6. Parents felt that the move would end with children getting addicted to such devices. There’s also the cost factor: parents allege that they would have to pay an average of Rs. 15,000 for the device and the content or pre-loaded syllabus. Satish H.P., a parent said that while he is not against tablets and other such learning devices, he is wary of introducing it to his child at such an early age. “Replacing textbooks with tablets can be detrimental to the child’s learning. The school initially said it was mandatory. Later, they made it optional. But we do not want students in one class to have different learning experiences,” he said. ‘Addicted to the screen’ Gauri Kamath, another parent, … [Read more...] about Parents protest replacement of textbooks with tabs

Felony charges dropped against 87 Breonna Taylor protesters arrested on Kentucky AG’s yard

July 18, 2020 by www.nbcnews.com

Felony charges have been dropped against 87 people who were arrested this week on the lawn of Kentucky's attorney general while protesting the response to the death of Breonna Taylor , the top local prosecutor announced Friday. The charge, intimidating a participant in a legal process, was reasonable, Jefferson County Attorney Mike O’Connell said in a statement. But "in the interest of justice and the promotion of the free exchange of ideas, we will dismiss that charge for each protester this past Tuesday," he said. The demonstrators gathered in Louisville, Kentucky, to demand the arrests of three plainclothes officers involved in Taylor's death March 13. Taylor was fatally shot when officers served a "no-knock" warrant at her Louisville home. Her boyfriend, who thought their apartment was being broken into, opened fire, injuring one officer. Taylor, 26, was shot eight times in a hail of return fire. A wrongful death lawsuit filed by Taylor's mother, Tamika Palmer, … [Read more...] about Felony charges dropped against 87 Breonna Taylor protesters arrested on Kentucky AG’s yard

Ryan Mountcastle’s improvements at first base helping fuel Orioles’ defensive turnaround: ‘He’s a huge asset’

August 18, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

For as much pregame defensive work as Ryan Mountcastle gets at first base, Orioles infield coach Tony Mansolino recognizes there’s one area of the game the young slugger receives no preparation for whatsoever. Baltimore’s coaching staff lacks a left-handed hitter, so even as Mountcastle fields groundballs almost daily to improve at his relatively new position, the spin he sees off fungo bats is exclusively that which comes off a right-hander’s bat. Mansolino wants to find a way to change that. “We joke about it, that I’m going to learn how to switch-hit next spring,” Mansolino said. “But I probably am.” Mountcastle’s troubles with the occasional grounder from a left-hander represent the most apparent deficiency in a defensive game that Mansolino said has “significantly” improved from last year to now. That effect has trickled to the Orioles’ infield defense, which ranked as one of baseball’s worst in 2021 but is now in the middle of the league. “In the major leagues, … [Read more...] about Ryan Mountcastle’s improvements at first base helping fuel Orioles’ defensive turnaround: ‘He’s a huge asset’

FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’

August 18, 2022 by www.breitbart.com

Wednesday, FNC host Tucker Carlson opened his broadcast with a scathing critique of the so-called Inflation Reduction Act. According to Carlson, the moniker “inflation reduction” was misinformation, which has been something the Biden administration has proclaimed to be a priority in combatting. Transcript as follows: CARLSON: People say the federal government seems big, maybe bigger than ever. Well, it actually is the largest employer in the world — the Federal government. Nothing else comes close — not Google, not Amazon, not the Communist Party of China — nothing. How many people work for the United States government? Let’s put it this way. There are more than a hundred countries around the world whose total populations (that is, every man, woman and child) are smaller than our Federal workforce — entire countries, many of them. The US government, in other words, is astoundingly large, world historically big, scale without precedent, truly gargantuan. So, what do all … [Read more...] about FNC’s Carlson: ‘Inflation Reduction Act May Be a Classic Example of Misinformation’

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! We heard a lot from Democrats, President Joe Biden, the media, and environmentalists about how great the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) will be for climate change. Curiously, it was crickets over the new law’s central claim — that it will reduce inflation. It won’t. But one thing this massive tax-and-spend behemoth will do — aside from unleashing 87,000 new IRS agents on middle-class taxpayers and small business owners — is extend direct subsidies for electric vehicles (EVs). Every lawyer in Trump’s “excellent” team fighting multiple cases

August 18, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

Former President Donald Trump has praised his "excellent" legal team as he faces multiple investigations into his conduct and ongoing probes by committees of the House of Representatives. Trump praised his attorneys in a post on his Truth Social platform on Wednesday in response to an article published by The Washington Post that claimed he was struggling to find adequate legal representation. "The WAPO story that 'Trump is scrambling to add seasoned lawyers' to the Mar-a-Lago Raid case is, as usual, FAKE NEWS," the former president wrote. "I already have excellent and experienced lawyers - am very happy with them. This is highly political prosecutorial misconduct, I have not been charged with anything and, most importantly, I did nothing wrong. Thank you!" Trump said. Trump currently has a number of different lawyers representing him as he faces multiple investigations. Those investigations include an ongoing FBI probe of the handling of White House documents and New … [Read more...] about Every lawyer in Trump’s “excellent” team fighting multiple cases

Trump’s Money Man Allen Weisselberg Pleads Guilty

August 18, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com

The Manhattan District Attorney’s attempts to flip former President Donald Trump’s loyal money man have officially failed, as the tax-dodging ex-chief financial officer Allen Weisselberg took a plea deal Thursday morning and won’t testify against his lifelong boss. Instead, he’ll get what some might consider a sweetheart deal for a 75-year-old man who kept his lips shut and wouldn’t implicate his old boss: six months or less behind bars. His legal team expects him to realistically spend three months in prison, and he will face five years of probation after serving his sentence. He will also have to pay back $1,994,321 in taxes he owed, prosecutors said in court. In return, Weisselberg has also agreed to openly testify about the way the Trump Organization rewarded him with untaxed corporate perks for years in the form of expensive tuition payments for his grandkids at a top-tier Manhattan private school, a luxury car to use anytime he wished, and a fully-paid swanky apartment … [Read more...] about Trump’s Money Man Allen Weisselberg Pleads Guilty

Saudi woman sentenced to 34 years in prison for her Twitter activity

August 18, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

She went home for a vacation. Now a Saudi woman is facing 34 years in prison for sharing her views on social media, human rights groups say, in a case they have condemned as the latest worrying sign of the kingdom's crackdown on dissent . Salma al-Shehab, a 34-year-old mother of two, was an active Twitter user while studying for a doctoral degree at the University of Leeds School of Medicine in the United Kingdom. She posted her own tweets about human rights issues as well as retweeting activists. Al-Shehab, who is a Saudi citizen, was arrested while visiting her home in January 2021, according to multiple human rights groups based in Europe and the United States. After initially being sentenced to six years in jail, the sentence was increased to a record 34 years earlier this month following her appeal, the rights groups said. Al-Shehab was also slapped with a 34-year travel ban that will take effect following her release, they said. The charges against her included … [Read more...] about Saudi woman sentenced to 34 years in prison for her Twitter activity
