The Keller Independent School District is under fire after pulling dozens of books from shelves for review, including the Bible. Several books were pulled from shelves for review, per a directive from Jennifer Price, executive director of Keller ISD’s curriculum and instruction. According to the Texas Tribune , Price wrote an email to principals, listing all of the books that were challenged in the district last year. “By the end of today, I need all books pulled from the library and classrooms. Please collect these books and store them in a location. (book room, office, etc.),” Price wrote. There were 41 books on the list, which included Maia Kobabe’s Gender Queer: A Memoir , which describes the journey of Kobabe, who uses e/em/eir pronouns. California school district agrees to $18 million settlement over 8-year-old special needs student’s deadly fall
A Southern California school district agreed to an $18 million settlement with parents of a special needs child who died after falling out of his chair on campus five years ago, lawyers for the boy's family said Wednesday. Moises Murillo, then 8, had a severe form of Down syndrome and was using his highly specialized chair on May 31, 2017 during summer classes at Sunset Elementary in La Puente. Moises, who was unable to walk, was taken out of the adaptive stroller and strapped into a normal school chair so he could participate in a classroom activity, according to a lawsuit filed by his family against the Hacienda La Puente Unified School District. The unattended child fell backward, hitting his head on the floor, severely injuring his spinal cord and leading to his death days later, Moises’ loved ones said. This August marks the hundredth anniversary of the birth of Ogden Nash, the idiosyncratic American master of light verse who is perhaps best remembered for his Prohibition-era suggestion that in matters of social icebreaking, "Candy/Is dandy/But liquor/Is quicker." For decades most of Nash's papers, public and private, have been in the possession of the University of Texas (Nash sold them, in 1967, to pay an unexpectedly large IRS bill), but more documents have recently come to light. Discovered among old family papers by Frances Smith, one of Nash's granddaughters, they include letters, poems, notes on rhyming possibilities, line drawings, drafts of stories, and rejected verse. A few selections are published here, for the first time.
