Yogi Takes Jibe at Azam Khan in Rampur, Says ‘Won’t Let the District Become ‘Den of Terror’ Again
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday lashed out at the Samajwadi Party, saying the BJP’s double-engine government has worked to liberate the poor from the land mafia, unlike the previous dispensation. In a veiled attack at SP MLA Azam Khan in his bastion Rampur, the CM said, “ Inki rassi jal gayi par ainthan nahi gayi (They lost all their powers but still their attitude didn’t come down). BJP won’t let Rampur become a ‘den of terrorism’ again.” The CM made the remarks while addressing public meetings in Bilaspur and Milak areas ahead of by-polls in support of BJP candidate Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi. “Earlier, land mafias used to encroach on land of the poor and often suppressed them. After coming to power, our government gave the land back to the poor and took action against such mafias and also took action against them.” The CM said the BJP government took back about 640 hectares of land in Rampur from the land mafia and give it back to the poor. EXPLAINER: Why Sri Lanka’s economy collapsed and what’s next
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) — Sri Lanka’s prime minister says the island nation’s debt-laden economy has “collapsed” as it runs out of money to pay for food and fuel. Short of cash to pay for imports of such necessities and already defaulting on its debt, it is seeking help from neighboring India and China and from the International Monetary Fund. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, who took office in May, was emphasizing the monumental task he faces in turning around an economy he said is heading for “rock bottom.” Sri Lankans are skipping meals as they endure shortages, lining up for hours to try to buy scarce fuel. It's a harsh reality for a country whose economy had been growing quickly, with a growing and comfortable middle class, until the latest crisis deepened. ___ HOW SERIOUS IS THIS CRISIS? Tropical Sri Lanka normally is not lacking for food but people … [Read more...] about EXPLAINER: Why Sri Lanka’s economy collapsed and what’s next

India reopens Embassy in Kabul
In a major step towards re-establishing its presence in Afghanistan, India sent a “technical team” of officials to be based in Kabul, reopening its Embassy on Thursday. India also sent its first consignment of earthquake relief assistance to Afghanistan, where more than 1,000 Afghans have been killed in an earthquake outside the city of Khost. The MEA said the assistance was handed over by the Indian team that travelled aboard an Indian Air Force Ilyushin-76 aircraft, in the first such military, non-commercial transportation since last year. The move to reopen the embassy, that comes more than ten months after the government shut down the Indian embassy, and pulled out all Indian personnel after the Ghani government fell, marks a reversal of the government’s policy on engaging the Taliban, and comes a few weeks after a team headed by senior MEA official J.P. Singh travelled to Kabul to meet with the Taliban-appointed acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Mottaqi and acting Interior … [Read more...] about India reopens Embassy in Kabul
White Power, White Violence
The mass shooting of Black grocery shoppers in Buffalo, New York, on Saturday follows a string of similar attacks. Gunmen have targeted worshippers at synagogues and mosques and temples and Bible study; they have opened fire on summer camps and people at festivals. We know the names of these places: Charleston; El Paso; Poway; Pittsburgh; Oak Creek; Christchurch, New Zealand. We know the names of the shooters, too, although I won’t list them here, because adding to their notoriety deepens the problem. Some of us also know by now that although we might think these are attacks on specific victim groups—and they are attacks on Black, Jewish, Islamic, Sikh, Latino, and immigrant populations—the aforementioned examples have all been part of one movement. In each event, a white-power activist was the perpetrator. Several of the assailants wrote extensively about their motivations in manifestos that outlined a coherent political ideology. And in the United States, they have been backed … [Read more...] about White Power, White Violence
Ukrainian army leaving battered city for fortified positions
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 5 KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — After weeks of ferocious fighting, Ukrainian forces have begun retreating from a besieged city in the country's east to move to stronger positions, a regional official said Friday, the four-month mark in Russia's invasion. The planned withdrawal from Sievierodonetsk, the administrative center of the Luhansk region, comes after relentless Russian bombardment that has reduced most of the industrial city to rubble and cut its population from 100,0000 to 10,000. Ukrainian troops fought the Russians in house-to-house battles before retreating to the huge Azot chemical factory on the city's edge, where they remain holed up in its sprawling underground structures in which about 500 civilians also found refuge. In recent days, Russian forces have made gains around Sievierodonetsk and the neighboring city of Lysychansk, on a steep bank across a river, in a bid … [Read more...] about Ukrainian army leaving battered city for fortified positions
Ukraine Army to leave battered Severodonetsk to avoid encirclement
“After weeks of ferocious fighting, Ukrainian forces will retreat from a besieged city in the country’s east to avoid encirclement,” a regional governor said on June 24. The city of Severodonetsk, the administrative centre of the Luhansk region, has faced relentless Russian bombardment . Ukrainian troops fought the Russians in house-to-house battles before retreating to a huge chemical factory on the city's edge, where they holed up in its sprawling underground structures. In recent days, Russian forces have made gains around Severodonetsk and the neighbouring city of Lysychansk, on a steep bank across the river, in a bid to encircle Ukrainian forces. Luhansk Gov. Serhiy Haidai said that the Ukrainian troops have been given the order to leave Severodonetsk to prevent that. “We will have to pull back our guys,” he said. “It makes no sense to stay at the destroyed positions, because the number of casualties in poorly fortified areas will grow every day.” Mr. Haidai said the … [Read more...] about Ukraine Army to leave battered Severodonetsk to avoid encirclement
