Here’s something odd: We’re getting worse at construction. Think of the technology we have today that we didn’t in the 1970s. The new generations of power tools and computer modeling and teleconferencing and advanced machinery and prefab materials and global shipping. You’d think we could build much more, much faster, for less money, than in the past. But we can’t. Or, at least, we don’t. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, productivity in the construction sector — how much more could be done given the same number of workers and machines and land — grew faster than productivity in the rest of the economy. Then, around 1970, it began to fall, even as economywide productivity kept rising. Today, the divergence is truly wild. A construction worker in 2020 produced less than a construction worker in 1970, at least according to the official statistics. Contrast that with the economy overall, where labor productivity rose by 290 percent between 1950 and 2020, or to the manufacturing sector, … [Read more...] about The Story Construction Tells About America’s Economy Is Disturbing

Dancing On Ice’s Joey Essex gushes over Vanessa but feels ‘underestimated’
She might not seem quite so imposing, but Joey Essex says being trained by his pint-sized figure skater partner is as tough as going toe-to-toe with a bunch of former special forces soldiers. The reality star survived two weeks being beasted on Channel 4 's SAS: Who Dares Wins and even made it through to the interrogation stage of the gruelling course. But it seems his time in the trenches was the perfect preparation for his latest adventure on Dancing On Ice. He has been paired with German skating champion Vanessa Bauer and Joey says she is proving just as tough as SAS hunk Jason Fox and his pals. "Vanessa really whips me into shape!" he says, speaking ahead of his second outing on ITV 's skating series tomorrow. "It's a similar process to SAS: Who Dares Wins, because you’ve got to listen. You’ve got to really focus. "The more you focus and the more you listen, the more you're going to go further in this journey. It really matters. Pope Francis: Death Penalty for Gays ‘Is Not Right’
ROME, Italy — Pope Francis returned to the issue of homosexuality Sunday, insisting that while gay sex is a sin, capital punishment for those with homosexual tendencies “is not right.” “If a person with homosexual tendencies is a believer and seeks God, who am I to judge him?” the pontiff said on his return trip to Rome from South Sudan, reiterating earlier statements. Moreover, he said, children with this orientation “have a right to stay at home; you cannot kick them out of the house.” “The criminalization of homosexuality is an issue that must not be allowed to pass by,” he said. “It is estimated that, more or less, fifty countries, in one way or another, promote this kind of criminalization — they tell me more, but let’s say at least fifty — and some of these — I think it’s ten, even foresee the death penalty.” “This is not right,” he said, because “people with homosexual tendencies are children of God, God loves them, God accompanies them.” Last week, the pope told the … [Read more...] about Pope Francis: Death Penalty for Gays ‘Is Not Right’
