With therapists in short supply, group counseling offers alternative
In the pandemic, Angela Lundberg's mental health plummeted. "I became anxious and depressed, and it disrupted my life," the 43-year-old Minneapolis substitute teacher says. "I lived in a constant state of fear and worried that everyone I loved would die." Lundberg's struggles are far from unique in the coronavirus era. Her decision to try group therapy might offer a way forward for others, as well. Initially, Lundberg, who is also a freelance writer, worried about "sharing my personal life with strangers," but she says she decided to give group therapy a try. "I was desperate to feel better," she says, and group therapy has helped. Since 2019, America's mental health needs have climbed. "More than four out of 10 adults, 43%, told a Census Bureau pulse survey in November 2020 they suffered from anxiety or depression," The Washington Post reported last year. From late August 2020 through Feb. 1, 2021, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Americans … [Read more...] about With therapists in short supply, group counseling offers alternative
‘Vesper’ Review: Resourceful European Sci-Fi Offers Glimmers of Beauty at the End of the World
Click here to read the full article. Should the apocalypse strike and any of us happen to survive it, you can’t accuse the movies of leaving us unprepared. Dystopian futures are a dime a dozen in science-fiction cinema these days, with a generally shared aesthetic that leads us to expect, for better or (probably) worse, a lot of damp, ashy slurry and unflattering sackcloth. In some ways “ Vesper ,” with its drenched khaki palette and all-encompassing air of ruin, conforms to this forecast. In others, Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper ’s solemn, elegant fantasy surprises with its textured, sometimes iridescent world-building: There’s beauty to be found in this vision of Earth in a state of ecosystemic collapse, even if it’s hard-won and harder still to nurture. Premiering in the main competition strand of this year’s Karlovy Vary festival, “Vesper” marks a long-awaited return to feature filmmaking for Lithuanian director Buozyte and her French writing partner Samper, now … [Read more...] about ‘Vesper’ Review: Resourceful European Sci-Fi Offers Glimmers of Beauty at the End of the World
Day-night protest planned against KSU leader’s arrest under KAAPA
The arrest and remand of Busher Jamsheer, a Kerala Students Union (KSU) leader under the Kerala Anti-Social Activities Prevention Act (KAAPA) in Kozhikode on Thursday have triggered strong protest against the police, with KSU terming it a politically instigated move to suppress agitations by youth against the LDF government. The KSU district leadership is planning to launch a day-night sit-in in front of the office of the District Police Chief (Kozhikode City) protesting against the “revengeful slapping of inapplicable sections” to permanently lock in political rivals. A meeting of the KSU district committee will be held here on Saturday ahead of announcing a final decision on the protest programme. “It was quite shocking that Mr. Jamsheer, KSU district secretary and law student, was detained under KAAPA for his alleged involvement in political clashes. If this was applicable to all, several leaders from the rival segment would have been in jail,” said KSU district president V.T. … [Read more...] about Day-night protest planned against KSU leader’s arrest under KAAPA
Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo resigns from City Council seat
Embattled Texas Police Chief Pete Arredondo has resigned from his seat in the Uvalde City Council, roughly a month after being sworn in to the position . The Uvalde Leader-News was the first to report on Arredondo’s resignation plans early Saturday afternoon. Uvalde city leaders said they received his official letter of resignation late Saturday afternoon after learning the news from the local paper. "After much consideration, it is in the best interest of the community to step down as a member of the City Council for District 3 to minimize further distractions," Arredondo said in his letter. "The Mayor, the City Council, and the City Staff must continue to move forward to unite our community, once again." The news of his resignation comes after Arredondo became the central figure in a series of tactical mistakes, including the decision to avoid confronting an 18-year-old gunman, in responding to the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 children and … [Read more...] about Uvalde schools police chief Pete Arredondo resigns from City Council seat
Forty and sulking
O ne day, five years ago, when I was lost somewhere in my thirties, the writer in me woke up and demanded to be let out. “Unleash your inner child,” she said, and as someone prone to gullibility, I was elated. After all, the children and the husband were all grown up and well-trained (pun intended), and I had some free time in my hand after a decade of maintaining a sane house and mind. Now, after being a full-time writer for a while, I discovered the inner child has grown into a snarky, bratty woman and could be quite a handful. For starters, she would criticise everything I write, including the shopping list, recipes and to-do lists. On days when she was particularly riled up, she would call my stories names such as “pouched egg”, meaning half-baked, and medu vadai, implying the plot hole is as big as the story. “They are better off blinking as an icon on your desktop,” she would say. I believed her, mostly. Showing off There were days when I would override her and submit my … [Read more...] about Forty and sulking
Gleeful Texas AG Closes His Entire State Office to Bask in Death of Roe
Of all the eye-popping responses to the Supreme Court’s bombshell decision to overturn Roe v. Wade on Friday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s was among the most extreme. The ultra-conservative Paxton said he’d be celebrating the removal of women’s rights by shutting down every attorney general’s office from noon and making June 24 an annual holiday for his staff. Dubbing it “Sanctity of Life” day, he called the holiday a “memorial” to “almost 70 million babies who have been killed in the womb.” Paxton did not, notably, do the same when an 18-year-old killed 19 children and two teachers last month at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Elsewhere, anti-abortion proponents popped champagne bottles in front of the Supreme Court and crowed on Fox News about it being a “wonderful day.” The conservative-majority Supreme Court ruled Friday that the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 was wrong and Americans do not have the constitutional right to an … [Read more...] about Gleeful Texas AG Closes His Entire State Office to Bask in Death of Roe
Frank Warren takes aim at rival promoter with brutal put-down over fight
Frank Warren has laughed off rival promoter Ben Shalom as being on his "first rodeo" after offering Joe Joyce another route to fighting Joseph Parker . Warren, whose Queensberry Promotions have an exclusive contract with BT Sports, used the massive platform of Tyson Fury 's world title defence against Dillian Whyte to push an agreed bout between Joyce and Parker. But days later, as he attempted to get the paperwork over the line, the veteran promoter was stunned to learn Parker had signed with Boxxer and Sky Sports. It appeared that New Zealander Parker's big-money deal to join Shalom had put an end to the possible Joyce fight, until the promoter offered a £1.2million purse to the Brit to fight on Sky. But Warren scoffed at the idea, tweeting that Shalom and Parker were simply looking to save face. "How to not make a fight," Warren tweeted alongside a laughing emoji. "1. Get everything you want in a contract & then not sign it. 2. Sign with a broadcaster that the … [Read more...] about Frank Warren takes aim at rival promoter with brutal put-down over fight
Royal Mail strike – what could happen as union ballots workers to walk out over pay
The summer of disruption could move from the train stations to the postal service as more than 100,000 Royal Mail workers choose whether to join strikes. Right-wing commentators have suggested Britain is returning to the 1970s - a decade when there were three-day weeks to deal with miners and railway workers striking, and a winter of discontent caused by pay row walkouts - due to the number of industrial disputes flaring up. Railway workers crippled the train network three times in a week earlier this month over pay wrangling, while barristers have walked out of courts in protest at their pay. Meanwhile, BA workers at Heathrow have agreed to strike and firefighters are weighing up a below-inflation wage rise offer. Postal workers could become the latest to agree to join what is being dubbed the "summer of discontent" and the largest industrial action seen in a generation. Are postal workers going on strike? The CWU says some Royal Mail workers are being … [Read more...] about Royal Mail strike – what could happen as union ballots workers to walk out over pay
Matt Fitzpatrick helped force brother to make rebel Saudi tour U-turn before US Open win
Recently crowned US Open champion Matthew Fitzpatrick helped younger brother Alex turn down a deal to link up with the controversial Saudi-backed Golf series that began earlier this month. The circuit - known as the LIV Golf Invitational Series - has sent shockwaves around the world of golf, attracting some of the sport’s biggest stars with mega-money deals, and huge financial prizes. As well as golf’s most renowned names - including Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson - circuit organisers, led by ex-world No. 1 Greg Norman also looked to poach some of the planet's hottest amateur players, which included Fitzpatrick. As an amateur, the chance to turn professional and compete for a £20 million prize pot each event is no doubt a tough offer to turn down. Alex though took the decision not to sign up - with the help of big brother Matt. Per Sportsmail he said: “Matt helped me make the decision along with my parents and his incredible victory emphasised to me that I made the … [Read more...] about Matt Fitzpatrick helped force brother to make rebel Saudi tour U-turn before US Open win
