Bombay HC dismisses Adani Ports plea challenging disqualification by JNPA

June 27, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Bombay High Court on Monday dismissed the plea by Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited of Adani challenging disqualification of its bid for upgrade of the container terminal in Navi Mumbai by the Board of Trustees of Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA). A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice M.S. Karnik rejected the plea as non-meritorious and directed the companies to pay ₹5 lakh to JNPA. Since Adani Ports has already submitted Rs 4.25 lakh with the tender to JNPA, it will deposit the remaining ₹75, 000. The Bench also refused Adani Ports’s request to maintain status quo and not open bids till it sought relief before the Supreme Court. As per the plea the said bidding process consisted of two stages, the first stage was a global invitation of ‘Request for Qualification’ (RFQ) seeking application from interested parties. The second stage was where the applicants had to send their ‘Request for Proposal.’ Adani ports had contended that after … [Read more...] about Bombay HC dismisses Adani Ports plea challenging disqualification by JNPA

The upcoming edition of the Indian Super League (ISL) is set to feature a number of graduates from the latest batch of the All India Football Federation (AIFF)’s developmental side Indian Arrows and with the competition set to kick off in Goa on November 20, the young guns are hard at work as they prepare to take their ISL bows. Among them is the rapidly-rising forward Vikram Partap Singh, who has 27 appearances for the Indian Arrows in the I-League to his name along with five goals, four of which came in the 2019-20 season. Having signed for Mumbai City FC in the ISL, the 18-year-old feels that the goals his performances for the Arrows last season have given him “belief in his abilities” ahead of the daunting challenge ahead. Vikram, who also led the Indian side to the last eight of the AFC U-16 Championship 2018, said: “The preparation for the new season is going on full swing. I do feel a little pressure but at the same time, there is a lot of excitement as well. Bruins re-up GM Sweeney; 1st job to find Cassidy replacement

June 27, 2022 by www.sfgate.com

BOSTON (AP) — All those wins and playoff appearances weren't enough for Bruce Cassidy to keep his job as Boston Bruins coach. But they earned general manager Don Sweeney a contract extension. The Bruins said on Monday they have signed Sweeney to a multiyear extension, six weeks after they lost in the first round of the playoffs and three weeks after he fired Cassidy. “Under his management, the Boston Bruins have been one of the winningest franchises in the league and a perennial playoff contender year in and year out," CEO Charlie Jacobs said. "While we recognize there is work to be done to achieve the ultimate goal of bringing the Stanley Cup back to Boston, I’m confident that Don’s commitment to being best-in-class on and off the ice will help us climb that mountain once again.” Under Sweeney, the Bruins reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2019, had the best record in the league the next year, and tallied at least 100 points in each of the past four full, non-pandemic seasons. … [Read more...] about Bruins re-up GM Sweeney; 1st job to find Cassidy replacement

Ranji Trophy should be the main arena in Indian cricket

June 28, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

Tears welled up in Chandrakant Pandit’s eyes. He was a happy man. The team he coaches had just won Indian cricket’s premier championship, the Ranji Trophy (June 22-26, played in Bengaluru). It was a first ever for Madhya Pradesh , one of the country’s biggest States and once upon a time home to the legendary C.K. Nayudu, India’s first Test captain, who played for Holkar, then based in Indore. Not many metres away was a teary-eyed Amol Muzumdar, Pandit’s comrade-in-arms when they had both played for Mumbai many years back. Muzumdar was crestfallen at the defeat of the once invincible Mumbai, the team he coaches and a team which from 1934 onwards has won the Ranji championship 41 times, a record which not many teams can even hope to aim for. Bearers of a fine legacy The streaming tears of joy of the victorious and the anguished cry of the vanquished  are a throwback to the times when the Ranji Trophy was Indian cricketers’ most keen sought prize. It was a gateway to greatness … [Read more...] about Ranji Trophy should be the main arena in Indian cricket

Roe Was Flawed. Dobbs Is Worse.

This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here . I’m a conservative (or what used to be called a conservative) who always thought Roe v. Wade was the product of judicial activism. But overturning it is even worse. But first, here’s more from The Atlantic . America is sliding into the long pandemic defeat, Ed Yong writes. We’re about to see just how pro-life Republicans actually are. The Constitution is whatever the right wing says it is, Adam Serwer argues. As of last Friday, American women lost the constitutional right to choose an abortion, ending a protection that’s nearly 50 years old. Like most Americans, I think abortion must remain legal—but with restrictions. I am conflicted about abortion because of things that happened in my own family , but when it comes to the law, let’s stipulate that … [Read more...] about Roe Was Flawed. Dobbs Is Worse.

Goaltender Roberto Luongo, Finnish women’s star Riikka Sallinen and builder Herb Carnegie were also selected Monday for induction in November. “It’s nothing you think about when you play the game of hockey,” Henrik Sedin said. “But for us, we put our head down and put our work in every day. We get the most out of our talent. That’s what we’re most proud of today.” The Sedins and Luongo are being inducted in their first year of eligibility. Alfredsson made it in his sixth year, ending the wait for the longtime Senators captain who helped them reach the Stanley Cup Final in 2007 and spent 17 seasons of his 18-year career in Ottawa. “It’s such a privilege to have been able to play this sport for a … [Read more...] about Swede Day: Alfredsson, Sedins elected to Hockey Hall of Fame
