A group of protesters gathered peacefully Wednesday in front of one of Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump's New York City skyscrapers to protest his comment from January that he "could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody" without losing support from voters. About 40 people from the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence and other gun-control advocates gathered outside of the candidate's headquarters for the so called die-in demonstration. On the stretch in front of the building, they briefly laid down and covered themselves in white sheets to represent the 90 Americas who are killed by gun violence each day. Then they stood up and repeatedly chanted, "Ninety a day, no more, no way!" Some held signs that read, "Hey Trump, gun violence is not a joke," "Not one more [gun death]" and "Love Trumps hate." The entire event lasted just 10 minutes, but the participants said they hope Trump hears their message. "We don't think talking about killing people … [Read more...] about Anti-gun protesters stage “die-in” outside of Trump Tower

9-Year-Old Ohio Girl Raises $100k to Fight Brain Cancer in Memory of Twin
A nine-year-old Ohio girl has raised more than $100,000 to fund research for brain cancer after her twin brother passed away from a malignant tumor last year, WLWT reports . In September 2019, then-six-year-old Grant Wolf of Loveland and his family learned the awful news that he was diagnosed with Medulloblastoma. The Loveland community rallied around the youngster, becoming known as “Grant’s Wolf Pack,” but after battling the disease for over a year, Grant passed away on January 22, 2021 – weeks before he and his twin sister, Julia’s eighth birthday, according to WLWT. “I couldn’t even bear the thought of having a birthday without my twin brother so I wanted to honor him while turning eight,” Julia recently told the outlet. In honor of Grant’s memory, Julia, with her mother Sarah’s help, established a Facebook fundraiser for the nonprofit The Cure Starts Now, hoping to raise around $240 in increments of $8 by their eighth birthday on February 11, WKRC noted . … [Read more...] about 9-Year-Old Ohio Girl Raises $100k to Fight Brain Cancer in Memory of Twin
Furious Burger King customer slammed after calling POLICE to complain about order
A Burger King customer who phoned police to complain her meal wasn't cooked perfectly was quickly put in her place after being slammed for wasting emergency services' time. The fast food giant have released audio from a 911 call handed to them by police. The American woman can be heard ranting about her experience at a drive-thru, to the shock of the dispatcher. She claims she asked staff four different times to make her Western Barbecue Burger just the way she wanted it. After opening the bag, the diner demanded an officer come to her location before being informed her she didn’t have a criminal complaint. There was only one thing for it after her Western Barbecue Burger wasn't cooked how she wanted it ( Image: Getty Images) “OK, what exactly is it you want us to do for you?” the worker can be heard saying. “We can’t go out there and make them make you a cheeseburger the way you want it.” Amazingly, the woman replies: “Well, you’re supposed to be here to … [Read more...] about Furious Burger King customer slammed after calling POLICE to complain about order

Checking in on the superstar shortstops the Yankees passed on during the offseason
It was not long ago that the baseball world cast an eye of confused suspicion on the Yankees. That was before the 32-13 start that’s caused the haters to clam up. But an offseason without any superstar acquisitions felt peculiar, especially as the Yankees could have, theoretically, taken their pick of any of the available shortstops at the right price. Instead, the increasingly frugal front office used the trade market to find their shortstop, with general manager Brian Cashman confirming that the team never even made an offer to Carlos Correa . It has more than paid off so far, as the Yankees have ridden the combination of improved infield defense and altered approaches at the plate to become a much more complete team than the talented but limited one they had in 2021. We’ll never know how Correa, Corey Seager, Trevor Story or Marcus Semien would have began their 2022 seasons had they signed with the Yankees. But through roughly 45 games with their new teams, a few have … [Read more...] about Checking in on the superstar shortstops the Yankees passed on during the offseason
Gilets jaunes infighting shows the movement is brutally disunited – but Macron is still no match for them
Those of us who observed France’s gilets jaunes (yellow vests) on their 13th Saturday in a row of Paris street demonstrations last weekend witnessed incidents that were as surreal as they were horrific. One of the protesters lost four fingers in an explosion caused by police munitions outside France’s National Assembly. It happened as armed officers battled to prevent a full-blown assault on the country’s parliament. Later on, an anti-terrorist patrol vehicle was set alight at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. As orange flames leapt skywards, vast clouds of thick black smoke swirled around a structure normally viewed as an indestructible symbol of the city of love and light. Is Paris burning? – like the title of the classic war film featuring Kirk Douglas, Alain Delon and Orson Welles – became a pertinent question, but this was by no means the most visually shocking scene of the day. That came in Lyon, where rival gangs of gilets jaunes turned the southeastern … [Read more...] about Gilets jaunes infighting shows the movement is brutally disunited – but Macron is still no match for them
Official: Girl told 911 ‘send the police now’ as cops waited
By JIM VERTUNO and ELLIOT SPAGAT UVALDE, Texas (AP) — Students trapped inside a classroom with a gunman repeatedly called 911 during this week’s attack on a Texas elementary school, including one who pleaded, “Please send the police now,” as officers waited in the hallway for more than 45 minutes, authorities said Friday. The commander at the scene in Uvalde — the school district’s police chief — believed that 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos was barricaded inside adjoining classrooms at Robb Elementary School and that children were no longer at risk, Steven McCraw, the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said at a contentious news conference. “It was the wrong decision,” he said. Friday’s briefing came after authorities spent three days providing often conflicting and incomplete information about the 90 minutes that elapsed between the time Ramos entered the school and when U.S. Border Patrol agents unlocked the classroom door and killed him. When the border … [Read more...] about Official: Girl told 911 ‘send the police now’ as cops waited
Ukraine Forces May Retreat from Luhansk as Russia Advances in the East, Says Kyiv
Ukraine said on Friday its forces may need to retreat from their last pocket of resistance in Luhansk to avoid being captured by Russian troops pressing a rapid advance in the east that has shifted the momentum of the three-month-old war. A withdrawal could bring Russian President Vladimir Putin closer to his goal of capturing Ukraine’s Luhansk and Donetsk regions in full. His troops have gained ground in the two areas collectively known as the Donbas while blasting some towns to wastelands. Luhansk’s governor, Serhiy Gaidai, said Russian troops had entered Sievierodonetsk, the largest Donbas city still held by Ukraine, after trying to trap Ukrainian forces there for days. Gaidai said 90% of buildings in the town were damaged. ”The Russians will not be able to capture Luhansk region in the coming days as analysts have predicted,” Gaidai said on Telegram, referring to Sievierodonetsk and its twin city Lysychansk across the Siverskiy Donets River. ”We will have enough strength … [Read more...] about Ukraine Forces May Retreat from Luhansk as Russia Advances in the East, Says Kyiv
How Lake Tahoe became the site of the epic climax of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
Sign up for our Remote Control newsletter to receive our best entertainment stories in your inbox every week. Thousands of visitors fly into Lake Tahoe every year, but very few arrive in a F/A-18E Super Hornet. That was Tom Cruise’s ride in “Top Gun: Maverick,” the blockbuster sequel to the 1986 classic directed by Tony Scott , which shot much of its climax sequence in the South Lake Tahoe area. Filming took place nearly four years ago in December 2018 , with pandemic-related delays repeatedly pushing back the movie’s release until May 27. The movie used military bases all over the west coast, including North Island in San Diego, Lemoore in Fresno and Kings counties, China Lake in Ridgecrest, and Naval Air Station Fallon in Nevada, where the real life top gun aviation school is located. Each of those locations offered unique qualities, but none were quite right for the film’s climax. To find the perfect site, location manager Mike Fantasia — who also worked on … [Read more...] about How Lake Tahoe became the site of the epic climax of ‘Top Gun: Maverick’
Inside Italy’s creepy ‘island of ghosts’ where 160,000 died – and tourists are banned
An abandoned 'island of ghosts ' saw the deaths of 160,000 people, and housed an asylum where patients were tortured. Poveglia Island, off the coast of Venice and Lido, Italy, is now closed to all but the hardiest dark tourists who either sneak on or get special permission. Set foot on the island and you would be forgiven for thinking that you're in the northern Italy version of paradise. Blue waters lap on the beaches and lush foliage wrap around the base of the central church spire. Walk a little further inland and you'll discover that the pleasing medieval roof tops are falling down into hospital rooms that have long since been abandoned. For the past 54 years Poveglia and the psychiatric hospital that sat on it have been closed, its buildings allowed to seep and crack as the natural world slowly reclaims it. Those of a supernatural inclination may be glad to see the human footprint turn to dust, as within those walls are the memories of much anguish and misery. … [Read more...] about Inside Italy’s creepy ‘island of ghosts’ where 160,000 died – and tourists are banned
