Kerala rain | Ernakulam collector draws flak after delay in declaring holiday for educational institutions
Ernakulam district collector Renu Raj came in for considerable flak from parents over her perceived delay in announcing holiday for educational institutions on August 4 in view of the incessant rain . On her part, Dr. Raj said that it was a discretionary call taken by her based on the field reality considering the safety of the children though there was no ‘Red’ alert for the day and hence no need for declaring a holiday as per the protocol. Incidentally, the weather forecast for the district was upgraded from ‘Orange’ (heavy to very heavy rain) to ‘Red’ (extremely heavy rain) alert much later. She declared holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, around 8.30 a.m. by which time majority of the students, especially of CBSE and ICSE schools where classes start relatively early, had already reached their institutions. For many years since then, her identity was that of a homemaker and a mother of four. Then about five years ago, when she was 58, Ms. Sakeena, a resident of Manjummel, stumbled upon a newspaper report about the Kerala State Literacy Mission’s equivalent courses that helped people learn irrespective of their age. “I registered straightaway with the Eloor study centre and cleared the seventh and 10th equivalent courses. Now, I am set to appear for the higher secondary equivalent course in humanities next week,” she said. She had the backing of all her four children, who knew that their mother had loved to learn but had been denied that opportunity earlier. Ms. Sakeena had ensured that her daughter and three sons were well-educated. She cleared the 10th equivalent course in 2019, but the pandemic delayed her pursuit of higher studies. Illinois gets inflation-relief tax break on school supplies
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Inflation means stocking up on pencils, notebooks, crayons and clothes for your kids’ return to school is more expensive this year, so Illinois state leaders on Thursday offered a 10-day sales tax reduction on classroom needs. Beginning Friday, the state sales tax on school materials, including clothing, will be 1.25% for 10 days, down from the usual 6.25%, part of an inflation relief plan put together by Democrats who control the General Assembly. They have said it's possible because of four consecutive balanced budgets under Gov. J.B. Pritzker. Teachers will also get a break on classroom materials with a $250 tax credit this year and $500 in 2023. “These past two-and-a-half years — for everyone — of managing through the pandemic has been hard,” Pritzker said Thursday at Roosevelt Elementary School in Broadview, a suburb west of Chicago. “And the last nine months of inflation on top of that has strained the budgets of parents and teachers alike.” … [Read more...] about Illinois gets inflation-relief tax break on school supplies

GOP Midterm bonus “not even being talked about”—Paul Manafort
The Republican Party will achieve a "bonus" victory in the upcoming midterms by securing more state legislatures, according to Donald Trump 's former campaign manager Paul Manafort . Manafort, who was jailed for tax and bank fraud charges in 2019, said that not only will the Democratic Party face a "tsunami wave" of congressional and Senate losses in November, but the GOP could further flip a number of legislative chambers. The GOP currently already dominates the nation's state legislatures, fully controlling 30, compared to the Democrats ' 17, with three states having split control. According to analysis from the University of Virginia's Center for Politics, at least four state chambers are considered "toss-ups" and could go either way in November, three of which are held by Democrats. Manafort was speaking to Newsweek ahead of the release of his new book Political Prisoner: Persecuted, Prosecuted, but Not Silenced . The book heavily focuses on how Trump won … [Read more...] about GOP Midterm bonus “not even being talked about”—Paul Manafort
Almost No Compliance of RTE: Lack of Infrastructure, Awareness Keeps Children With Disabilities Out of Schools
Akhilesh Tiwari, the father of 9-year-old Atharv, a child with Cerebral Palsy (CP), has been trying for the last five years to enroll his son in a mainstream school in Mumbai. Despite Akhilesh’s efforts, his son didn’t get enrolled in any primary mainstream school. While Atharv today should have been in Class 4, his mother tutors him at home. When doctors suggested a mainstream school for Atharv’s education, his father claims to have first approached St. Joseph School, in Vikhroli, a government-aided institution. “It’s near our house and is considered to be a good institution. I urged the school principal Father Sachin Lopez multiple times to enroll Atharv but he did not agree and cited numerous reasons,” said Akhilesh. The principal allegedly first asked the parents to provide a helper to accompany Atharv to school. “When my wife agreed to take up the responsibility, the school said that a helper will lead to other students ostracising Atharv. They then discouraged us from … [Read more...] about Almost No Compliance of RTE: Lack of Infrastructure, Awareness Keeps Children With Disabilities Out of Schools
Three Ways Schools Can Help Girls Build Confidence
When it comes to academic achievement, girls are outperforming boys at nearly every level. Girls are earning better grades than boys, outpacing boys when it comes to high school graduation rates and outnumbering boys at colleges across the country. Despite this and despite recent efforts to build more equitable hiring and promotion practices, we know that sexism remains pervasive in the job market across every industry and field. But there's another insidious issue that we must be more aggressive in addressing — and it's related to the one data point in which we still see boys outperforming girls by a wide margin: confidence . According to a 2018 study , boys and girls exhibit similar levels of confidence up to the age of twelve. But after this age, these levels begin to diverge dramatically. By age 14, girls report levels of self-assurance that are 27% lower than those of boys, and the gap widens throughout adolescence. The study further indicates that by age 14, … [Read more...] about Three Ways Schools Can Help Girls Build Confidence
