A report published on Thursday morning claimed Taiwanese tourists stranded in Japan by Typhoon Jebi were compelled to identify themselves as “Chinese,” rather than Taiwanese, to receive emergency assistance. The report was published by one of China’s state-run news organs, the Global Times, which seemed to regard the incident as amusingly humiliating for Taiwan. The South China Morning Post summarized the Global Times report: The newspaper seized on Chinese tourists’ claims that they told tourists from Taiwan to board buses only if they identified as Chinese. Beijing regards the self-ruled island as a breakaway province to be reunited with the mainland, by force if necessary. “A few Taiwanese asked if they could board the bus provided by the Chinese embassy for evacuation,” a Chinese witness in the airport was quoted as saying. “[Chinese people] all said, ‘Sure, if you identify yourself as Chinese, follow your home country.’” … [Read more...] about Report: Taiwanese Forced to Identify as Chinese to Get Typhoon Emergency Aid

Taiwanese President Presides over Military Drill After Biggest Chinese Naval Drill in History
Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen was on hand for a military drill on Friday, a day after China held the largest naval drill in its history in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. China also indicated this week that it will hold live-fire drills in the Straits of Taiwan. The South China Sea has been lively this week as China held three days of naval exercises, beginning near the massive submarine base in Hainan province and rolling into live-fire drills that included China’s only operational aircraft carrier to date, the Liaoning. “Hainan is the starting point for China’s ‘Belt and Road Initiative,’ while the South China Sea has the most important strategic sea waters for China to project its maritime presence and influence,” Beijing-based naval expert Li Jie told the South China Morning Post (SCMP). “Beijing wants to tell Washington that the Chinese navy is capable of defending the waters relating to its core national interests,” Li … [Read more...] about Taiwanese President Presides over Military Drill After Biggest Chinese Naval Drill in History

The arrest and conviction of Ming-cheh came at a time when activists face increased pressure from authorities under Chinese President Xi Jinping. Ming-cheh's sentencing and jail term was deemed "unacceptable" by Taiwan, straining ties between the two nations that also are involved in a fight over islands in the South China Sea, most of which has been claimed by Beijing. China Threatens to Boycott Taiwanese Bakery After Visit from President Tsai
China has threatened a boycott of a popular Taiwanese bakery after Taiwan’s president visited a store in California last Sunday during a short stopover trip in the United States. The chain of bakeries, known as 85C, hosted Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen at one of its stores in Los Angeles, where she was photographed buying a drink, signing a toy loaf of bread, and receiving a gift bag from the staff. The visit was part of her stopover trip in the U.S. before departing on diplomatic trips to Paraguay and Belize. The visit soon sparked anger across China. People on social media loyal to Beijing called for boycotts on the chain, citing President Tsai’s support for eventual Taiwanese independence. The government also took action against the store, ramping up stories on state media about 85C’s “longstanding problems,” which supposedly include low food standards and poor hygiene while government inspectors in one city have already found one … [Read more...] about China Threatens to Boycott Taiwanese Bakery After Visit from President Tsai
State Department Tweet Calls Taiwan ‘Chinese Taipei,’ Using China-Approved Term
The State Department’s Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs referred to Taiwan as “Chinese Taipei” in a tweet Thursday — a bow to China’s demands that Taiwan not be recognized as a separate country but part of China. The tweet read: “The United States and Chinese Taipei collaborate closely to increase the participation of #women across the Asia-Pacific region, including through @APEC. Thanks for the exchange of ideas! #APECWEF2018.”The tweet did not go unnoticed by members of Congress and journalists. Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-WI) chided the bureau for using “PRC-sanitized terms,” in reference to China’s formal name, the People’s Republic of China (PRC). “Given the PRC’s relentless bullying, it’s more important than ever that the U.S. stands behind Taiwan. Using PRC-sanitized terms only encourages more coercion from Beijing,” he tweeted. Journalist Kyle Olbert tweeted: “Excuse … [Read more...] about State Department Tweet Calls Taiwan ‘Chinese Taipei,’ Using China-Approved Term
