VISTA — Three years after Solutions for Change walked away from federal grants because of a disagreement with a government department, the Vista-based nonprofit is back to pursuing federal dollars from a different source and has found a Washington, D.C. office more supportive of its mission.“What’s funny is, one federal agency essentially squeezed us out, and another federal agency says, ‘Wait a minute, this is exactly what we’re looking for,’” said Chris Megison, president and CEO of Solutions for Change.The nonprofit describes itself as the only full-service leadership development residential program for homeless families in the country. Undocumented students at Colorado Mountain College now have the opportunity to earn their degrees without paying a dime upfront through a first-of-its-kind funding model that lets so-called Dreamers wait until they graduate to repay their education through a fixed percentage of their income. The program — called Fund Sueños, which translates to “the Dream Fund” — is designed to assist undocumented students, including those eligible for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, who can’t obtain federal financial aid to help pay for a college education. “We have a pretty large number of Dreamers in our mountain resort communities, and this is designed to help support young people that are often left behind,” said Carrie Hauser, president of the 11-campus, Glenwood Springs-based college. “This is not at the exclusion of the other students we serve.
