Former Army Chief General Shankar Roy Chowdhury (retired) on Wednesday said it should be remembered that India is not in 1962, and asserted that the country should be prepared for a conflict not amounting to a full-scale war with China. Twenty Indian Army personnel including a colonel were killed in a clash with Chinese troops in the Galwan Valley in eastern Ladakh on Monday night, the biggest military confrontation in over five decades between the two neighbours. Roy Chowdhury said that the strength of both sides has multiplied immensely since 1962, when the two neighbours fought a brief war. "India is not in 1962, (and) we must remember that neither China is in 1962," he told PTI. The Chinese Army is also reported to have suffered several casualties in the face-off. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 BRUSSELS (AP) — European Union countries agreed Monday that all natural gas storage in the 27-nation bloc should be topped up to at least 80% capacity for next winter as they prepare for the possibility of Russia further reducing deliveries. The EU is trying to slash its use of Russian energy amid the Kremlin’s war in Ukraine and find other sources. Meanwhile, Moscow is disrupting natural gas deliveries, a fuel used to power factories and generate electricity that the EU didn’t include in its own sanctions for fear of seriously harming the European economy. Before the war, the bloc got about 40% of its natural gas from Russia. Moscow has reduced gas supplies to several EU countries, including heavy importers Germany and Italy, and cut off … [Read more...] about EU countries adopt mandatory gas storage amid Russia’s cuts

Russia ready for direct confrontation with all of NATO, state TV host says
A Russian state television host warned that the country is ready to confront NATO as tensions between Moscow and the West continue to escalate over the war in Ukraine. Speaking on the state-controlled television Channel 1 on Sunday, television host Vladimir Solovyov said that Russia was only using 18 percent of its army in Ukraine and its military was fighting at "a peacetime" size so it was ready for "a direct confrontation" with the international military alliance if necessary. Andrey Gurulyov, State Duma deputy and former deputy commander of Russia's southern military district, who was also speaking on the show, boasted that Russia's nuclear capability meant it can "liquidate all means of an attack that threaten the territory of Russia." Responding, Solovyov said: "That's why it's understood why we're currently using less than 18 percent of our Armed Forces, which is our peacetime army because we are ready for a direct confrontation with the armed forces of the entire … [Read more...] about Russia ready for direct confrontation with all of NATO, state TV host says

Two voices, one spirit
A conversation with the Gundecha Brothers, Umakant and Ramakant, is like the unfolding of a jugalbandi. They dress alike, talk alike, when one stops, the other takes off spontaneously. The Gundecha Brothers have always been singing together. The jugalbandi is an important feature of the Dhrupad, especially in the Dagar tradition. When they sing there is unison, the two so attuned, so aware of each other. Performing together involves understanding of the musical aesthetics and thoughts of each other. It can, however, sometimes be tricky. “We complement each other in an effort to build up our music, our concert,” says Umakant. NEWS18 EXPLAINS: Hong Kong’s Rocky Political Road Since The 1997 Handover
Hong Kong on July 1 will mark its 25th anniversary under Chinese rule. The financial hub returned to China from Britain in 1997, with promises of wide-ranging freedoms and autonomy under “one country, two systems” governance. Critics, including some Western governments, say China has reneged on those promises in recent years under a sweeping national security law. Authorities in Hong Kong and China reject those claims. WHAT ARE THE KEY POLITICAL MILESTONES? Hong Kong was wrested from China by Britain in three phases, starting with the mid-19th century Opium Wars. Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon peninsula were signed over in perpetuity. The larger rural New Territories and outlying islands were added under a 99-year lease in 1898. In 1984, Britain and China agreed that Hong Kong would be handed back at midnight on June 30, 1997. A mini-constitution, the Basic Law, was later drafted, guaranteeing Hong Kong’s capitalist way of life for 50 years as well as a high degree of autonomy, … [Read more...] about NEWS18 EXPLAINS: Hong Kong’s Rocky Political Road Since The 1997 Handover
