The aid to farmers, to be announced by the United States Department of Agriculture, would come through a direct assistance program, one designed to help with food purchase and distribution, and one specifically geared toward promoting trade, according to one of the people. Both spoke on condition of anonymity because they did not have authorization to pre-empt a planned announcement later Tuesday. Pioneering legal pot states — like Colorado — aim to ease rules on industry

· April 2, 2019 ·

SEATTLE — When Washington and Colorado launched their pioneering marijuana industries in the face of U.S. government prohibition, they imposed strict rules in hopes of keeping the U.S. Justice Department at bay. Businesses would need to track plants and products with bar codes. Regulators would have to approve money invested to ensure it was not tied to criminals. Owners of pot operations would have to live in-state and pass background checks. Five years later, federal authorities have stayed away, but the industry says it has been stifled by over-regulation. Lawmakers in both states have heard the complaints and are moving to ease the rules. “There’s a saying in the business world: ‘Pioneers get slaughtered, and settlers get fat,'” said Greg James, publisher of industry magazine Marijuana Ventures, based near Seattle. “These rules have made the entire industry very inefficient. We’re going to get left in the dust unless we change some things … [Read more...] about Pioneering legal pot states — like Colorado — aim to ease rules on industry

Schumer: White House insisted that Sinatra, not Sweet, be federal judge

· May 10, 2018 ·

WASHINGTON -- Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer said Thursday that he pressed for the renomination of lawyer Kathleen M. Sweet to be Buffalo's first female federal judge, but that the Trump White House insisted on nominating John L. Sinatra Jr. -- a Republican being pushed by GOP Rep. Chris Collins -- for the judicial vacancy instead. "I wanted her," Schumer, a New York Democrat, said in an telephone interview with The Buffalo News. "I told the White House she was my first choice in Buffalo. They came back and said they would not nominate her." Schumer told the White House "she's the best you can have," but he said the Trump White House rejected Sweet -- a Democrat nominated by Democratic President Barack Obama in 2016 -- without offering an explanation. That being the case, Schumer endorsed Sinatra's nomination. “This nomination was the result of a sound, collaborative and bipartisan process that produced a well-respected and legally-qualified choice with broad … [Read more...] about Schumer: White House insisted that Sinatra, not Sweet, be federal judge

Donald Trump hits just keep coming from The New York Times. Wednesday’s cover article was a deep dive into an apparent sweet deal that then New Jersey Governor Chris Christie gave to Trump on his mounting casino tax debt that was plaguing his business. The article goes on to speculate if Trump was given “special treatment” because of his close relationship with the New Jersey Governor.  From 2002 through 2006, as Trump’s casinos in New Jersey struggled financially, Trump also faced a mounting unpaid tax bill that the business claimed they couldn’t afford. That suddenly changed in 2011 when Chris Christie took officer.  The article states:The total (Tax bill), with interest, had grown to almost $30 million. The state had doggedly pursued the matter through two of the casinos’ bankruptcy cases and even accused the company led by Mr. Trump of filing false reports with state casino regulators about … [Read more...] about Report: Gov.
