I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick

POLL: Most Democratic Voters Oppose The Abortion Policies Their Party Wants To Nationalize
Less than 20% of Democratic voters support legal abortion up to birth, even as Democrats attempt to codify that into federal law, a new poll found. The poll, conducted May 6-8 by the Trafalgar Group and Convention of States Action, found only 18.8% of Democrats in the survey supported legal abortion up to birth, and 45.3% supported legal abortion only in the first and second trimesters, according to the poll. A combined 35.9% of Democrats thought abortion should be illegal except in certain circumstances, which included the life and health of the mother, rape and incest and a cutoff at the point a fetal heartbeat can be detected, which occurs at around six weeks. Democrats tried to ram through the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), sponsored by Democratic Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal and cosponsored by another 47 of 50 Senate Democrats, on May 11. The legislation would strike down all abortion limits in the first six months of pregnancy and force states to allow … [Read more...] about POLL: Most Democratic Voters Oppose The Abortion Policies Their Party Wants To Nationalize
Mathematics: Love it or hate it, you can’t escape it
I DON'T LIKE IT I dropped mathematics after Class 10 and that, I think, has been one of the easiest decisions I’ve ever made. While I scored about 85 in most other subjects, I always managed only 60 in maths. The formulas continue to scare me even today and the thought of an upcoming maths class used to give me jitters. Now, I feel like an unpleasant journey has come to an end. Harsh Gopal Daga Class XI, Chennai Public School, Thirumazhisai *** Maths has always been about problems, and I always had problems learning it. My mother was an arts teacher but she always had a fondness for maths, which unfortunately never passed on to me. Maths was nice to me in my primary classes, but then it decided to get serious with algebra and trignometry. Maths was also the one of the reasons I chose commerce stream rather than science. Still, it continues to pop up here and there. The bitter truth is that I hate maths but it loves me. Shibin C. Ex-sunbed addict left with golf-ball sized hole in face as tiny bump leads to cancer
A tan-loving mum has been left with a golf ball-sized hole and 'Frankenstein' stitching on her face after what she thought was a tiny bump turned out to be cancer. Misty Ovens was diagnosed with basal cell carcinoma, a form of skin cancer, last month but was left in shock when she saw the results of the surgery to remove it. The mum-of-three said she used sunbeds an average of once a week for 10 years during her youth but became far more vigilant at protecting her skin following a life-changing breast cancer diagnosis in 2011. Misty, 44, is now keen to raise awareness of the importance of wearing and reapplying sunscreen. I expected the verdict and respect the same, says former CBI director Kaarthikeyan who probed Rajiv Gandhi assassination
The Supreme Court verdict releasing A.G. Perarivalan , one of the life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, is on expected lines, former Director Central Bureau of Investigation D.R. Kaarthikeyan said. “I respect this verdict and it is on expected lines. We have to respect the Supreme Court judgment,” Mr Kaarthikeyan, who led the Special Investigation Team that probed the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, told The Hindu on Wednesday. However, Mr. Karthikeyan sought to dismiss claims that the convicts in the case were innocent. “We did an in-depth investigation leaving no stone unturned. The team toiled for several months collecting crucial evidence from all possible sources and finally managed to go from the crime to the criminal. Three eminent Supreme Court judges upheld the verdict after hearing the matter over three long months — perhaps the longest ever appeal heard in the apex court. It is not that any of them were innocent,” he said. “This was not just … [Read more...] about I expected the verdict and respect the same, says former CBI director Kaarthikeyan who probed Rajiv Gandhi assassination

Steve Schmidt discusses violent extremism, the GOP and John McCain
Political strategist Steve Schmidt has made headlines recently over new revelations about his professional—and personal—relationship with the late Senator John McCain , as well as with the McCain family. Schmidt, to hear him tell it, has nothing to sell or promote with this discussion of a campaign that took place a decade and a half ago. He's merely setting the record straight, and drawing a throughline from our nation's infancy to Sarah Palin to the present. Schmidt joined Declassified With Naveed Jamali to discuss his frustration with McCain's choice of running mate in 2008 and the trajectory of the party he very publicly left in 2018 . What follows is a lightly edited transcript of parts of Schmidt's appearance on Declassified . This past weekend, there was a horrible massacre, a terrorist attack, in Buffalo. It brings so many questions. One of them is this idea of how you cover something like that, without making it feel like this is the first case of … [Read more...] about Steve Schmidt discusses violent extremism, the GOP and John McCain

Trained sniffer dogs accurately detect airport passengers infected with SARS-CoV-2
Trained sniffer dogs can accurately detect airport passengers infected with SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19, according to new research. This method of detection is likely to be especially valuable, not only in the early stages of a pandemic when other resources might not yet be available, but also to help contain an ongoing pandemic, suggest the researchers. The research , published in the open-access journal BMJ Global Health, reveals dogs have a very keen sense of smell and can pick up a scent at levels as low as one part per trillion, far exceeding any available mechanical techniques. It is thought that they are able to detect distinct volatile organic compounds released during various metabolic processes in the body, including those generated by bacterial, viral, and parasitic infections. Preliminary data suggest that dogs can be trained within weeks to detect samples from patients with COVID-19 infection, with a degree of accuracy comparable to that of a … [Read more...] about Trained sniffer dogs accurately detect airport passengers infected with SARS-CoV-2
