It’s Official: The Supreme Court Has Overturned Roe v. Wade
Nearly half a century after the Supreme Court ruled that the ability to end a pregnancy was a constitutional right, the nation’s highest court has overturned Roe v. Wade . The majority opinion, authored by Justice Samuel Alito, ruled that the 1973 decision was wrong in its determination that an implied right to privacy in the U.S. Constitution protected a patient’s decision to have an abortion. “The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled,” Alito wrote for the 6-3 majority. “The authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.” The decision effectively ends abortion access for roughly 40 million women and girls in nearly two dozen states across the country. Thirteen of those states have pre-emptively enacted “trigger laws” intended to impose severe restrictions on the procedure in the event of a Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe . Others have pre- Roe bans that remain on the books or … [Read more...] about It’s Official: The Supreme Court Has Overturned Roe v. Wade

How Disney, a new mayor and a secret ‘cabal’ gained power over Anaheim
Inside the 3,000-square-foot suite on the top floor of the Disneyland Hotel’s Fantasy Tower, Harry Sidhu beamed as he surveyed the small group of Anaheim business leaders, consultants and politicians celebrating their return to power. Results from a bruising election filled the big-screen television behind the future mayor that night as supporters sipped wine and laughed amid red, white and blue balloons and small American flags. “Anaheim’s future is going to be bright going forward from here,” Sidhu told the group in a video of the event reviewed by The Times. “We are open for business!” Cheers filled the Blue Sky Suite, decorated with Midcentury Modern furniture and vintage renderings of Tomorrowland. Optimism flowed through impromptu speeches by Sidhu and two victorious councilmen like the flood of big-business cash that drove their campaigns. Left unspoken amid the applause, however, was that this November 2018 night also heralded the return of a small, secretive group of … [Read more...] about How Disney, a new mayor and a secret ‘cabal’ gained power over Anaheim
Katie Price’s many brushes with the law as she’s spared jail for ‘threatening’ text
Katie Price avoided a custodial prison sentence today after previously admitted breaching a restraining order against her ex-husband’s fiancee. The star has been handed an 18-month community order at Lewes Crown Court to carry out 170 hours of unpaid work after admitting breaching a restraining order by sending abusive messages to her ex-husband Kieran Hayler about his fiancée Michelle Penticost. Sentencing, judge Stephen Mooney told Price: “In my judgement, this offence was committed out of anger. “The words you used were highly offensive and inflammatory so the breach cannot be considered minor. “In my judgement, balancing the aggravating and mitigating and aggravating factors, the appropriate sentence is a medium level community order.” Katie Price arriving at Lewes Crown Court alongside Carl Woods on Friday morning ( Image: SplashNews.com) The star has had multiple court appearances over recent years ( Image: PA) Katie was said to have … [Read more...] about Katie Price’s many brushes with the law as she’s spared jail for ‘threatening’ text

Supreme Court overturns Roe v. Wade, allowing states to ban abortions
The Supreme Court has ended the nation’s constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday’s outcome is expected to lead to abortion bans in roughly half the states. The decision, unthinkable just a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by an emboldened right side of the court that has been fortified by three appointees of former President Donald Trump. Both sides predicted the fight over abortion would continue, in state capitals and in Washington, and Justice Clarence Thomas, part of Friday’s majority, called on the court to overturn other high court rulings protecting same-sex marriage, gay sex and the use of contraceptives. It’s personal: Canelo predicts KO in 3rd bout with Golovkin
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 LOS ANGELES (AP) — Canelo Álvarez is hurting after his first loss in nearly a decade, and he's still angry about everything that's happened during five years of fighting and arguing with Gennady Golovkin. Álvarez says he is determined to channel all of those bad feelings into a spectacular knockout win over Golovkin when they complete their rivalry trilogy on Sept. 17 in Las Vegas. The Mexican superstar declared his third fight with Golovkin to be a grudge match Friday as they began promoting their showdown with a news conference in Hollywood. Álvarez (57-2-2, 39 KOs) was beaten in stunning fashion by light heavyweight Dmitry Bivol seven weeks ago, but he guaranteed he will “definitely” punch the 40-year-old Golovkin into retirement by stopping him for the first time in his career. “(It will be) so sweet,” Álvarez said. “For me, it’s going to be very satisfying because of … [Read more...] about It’s personal: Canelo predicts KO in 3rd bout with Golovkin
South Dakota Gov. Noem gets emphatic win with AG’s removal
This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 8 PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Senate's decision this week to remove Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg from office was an emphatic victory for Gov. Kristi Noem, whose hard-driving effort to oust her fellow Republican likely sealed his fate even as some GOP lawmakers backed him. Noem, who has sprung to national prominence within the party and is widely considered a potential 2024 White House contender, began pushing Ravnsborg to step down within days after he struck and killed a pedestrian with his car in September 2020. He refused but was removed Tuesday through impeachment proceedings, with the Senate voting to convict the first-term Republican and then — unanimously — prohibiting him from holding public office again. Noem pressed impeachment through the Republican-controlled Legislature, providing crucial support on an effort that at times faced … [Read more...] about South Dakota Gov.
