President Donald Trump’s unwillingness to concede the election is bad news for many reasons. One is that it all but guarantees that some portion of his followers will refuse to recognize the Biden administration’s legitimacy—just as some people did not recognize the Trump administration’s legitimacy, or the Obama administration’s legitimacy before it. President-elect Joe Biden is promising a return to normalcy, but the perception by some substantial part of the electorate that the American president is illegitimate is no longer an aberration in American politics. It is normal. This may have all started with Bob Dole. Although people tend to think of the former Senate majority leader, now 97 years old, as an old-school Republican of the pre-scorched-earth era, he was as early as 1993 a chief source of chaos and destabilization. When Bill Clinton routed the incumbent George H. W. Bush in the 1992 presidential election—bringing the Democrats to the White House for the first time in 12 … [Read more...] about What Bob Dole Hath Wrought

Federal Judge Says Lindsey Graham Has To Testify In 2020 Election Investigation
A federal judge ruled against a motion by Republican South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham’s to quash a subpoena compelling him to testify to a grand jury about former President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis subpoenaed Graham in July 2022 as part of a grand jury investigation into a pressure campaign directed against Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. Graham spoke with Raffensperger by phone twice shortly following the 2020 election. “T hough Senator Graham argues that he is exempt from testifying as a high – ranking government official , t he Court finds that the District Attorney has shown extr aordinar y circumstances and a special need for Senator Graham’s testimony on issues relating to alleged attempts to influence or disrupt the lawful administration of Georgia’s 2022 elections ,” Northern District of Georgia Judge Leigh Martin May wrote in a Monday … [Read more...] about Federal Judge Says Lindsey Graham Has To Testify In 2020 Election Investigation
Merrick Garland’s case against Trump is dangerously problematic
close Video Attorney General Garland and Wray show 'utter lack of integrity and rectitude': Jarrett Fox News legal analyst Gregg Jarrett criticizes key players in the FBI's raid of former President Trump's home in Mar-a-Lago on 'Hannity.' NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! The confident predictions of Donald Trump’s sartorial refitting from blue custom suits to orange jumpsuits are, as always, premature and overwrought. Hysteria is what members of the liberal media do best. Furious assumptions and wanton speculation are their specialties. They are terminally allergic to the meaning and nuance of laws. Facts are trifling matters that tend to impede their favored narrative. But in the interest of truth and accuracy, let’s explore a few salient facts and relevant laws that the mainstream press would never bother to consider in their zeal to convict the former president of something—anything. To prove a case that Trump stole … [Read more...] about Merrick Garland’s case against Trump is dangerously problematic
SAG-AFTRA Will Reimburse out-of-State Abortion Travel for Actors and Their Children
The health plan of Hollywood’s largest union, SAG-AFTRA, has announced it will reimburse out-of-state abortion travel and lodging expenses for plan participants and their dependents, pledging it will “provide access to safe abortion services regardless of where they live or work.” SAG-AFTRA, which has an estimated 160,000 members, represents screen actors as well as many broadcast journalists and news professionals — though not all of them are qualified to participate in the health plan, which is among the most generous in the industry. The union’s health plan made the announcement Friday, calling abortion “reproductive health care.” SAG-AFTRA Health Plan Adopts Travel Reimbursement Benefit for Participants in States that Prohibit Abortion https://t.co/4YdNIf4nHG pic.twitter.com/lSS7NCmsV0 — SAG-AFTRA NEWS (@sagaftranews) August 12, 2022 “All Americans should have equal access to critical, necessary, and often life-saving reproductive health care, wherever they live … [Read more...] about SAG-AFTRA Will Reimburse out-of-State Abortion Travel for Actors and Their Children
Kenya’s William Ruto Declared President-elect in Disputed Vote Outcome
William Ruto was Monday declared the victor of Kenya’s hard-fought presidential poll, but the outcome sparked a split in the election commission and some violent protests in his defeated rival’s strongholds. Ruto won with 50.49 percent of the vote on August 9, narrowly ahead of Raila Odinga on 48.85 percent, Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati announced after an anxious days-long wait for results. With tensions running high after the disputed outcome, the 55-year-old president-elect vowed to work with “all leaders”. “There is no room for vengeance,” said Ruto. “I am acutely aware that our country is at a stage where we need all hands on deck.” AFP correspondents reported that police fired live rounds as protests erupted in a Nairobi slum that is an Odinga stronghold. Police also fired tear gas in his lakeside bastion of Kisumu where demonstrators threw stones and erected roadblocks with large chunks of rock. “We were cheated,” Isaac Onyango, … [Read more...] about Kenya’s William Ruto Declared President-elect in Disputed Vote Outcome

Kelly Brough is running for Denver mayor in 2023
Denver’s first open mayoral race in 12 years is underway and on Monday the most recognizable candidate to date officially jumped into the expanding pool of would-be top executives in the city. Kelly Brough, the former president and CEO of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce and former chief of staff to then-Denver-mayor, now U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper, filed her candidate paperwork on Monday. Brough did not immediately return a call seeking comment on her decision to run. When she spoke to The Denver Post about the prospect of seeking the city’s top office this spring, she said she was in the process of having conversations with residents around the city to see what their priorities were and to get feedback on ideas of her own. She did not definitively say she was running. That was a change from June 2021. At that time, as Brough was stepping away from her role as the first woman leader of the Denver Metro Chamber in its history, she denied she was considering a … [Read more...] about Kelly Brough is running for Denver mayor in 2023
Colorado picking up the tab for abortion bans in other states, reproductive rights group says
Data from one reproductive rights group confirms that abortion providers in Colorado who were expecting a surge of patients coming from other states after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade were right. On Monday, Cobalt announced that its abortion fund had provided funding for procedures to 140 people between June 24 (the day of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization ruling) and July 31, totaling about $47,985, which staff members said is a much higher level of support than is typical. In the week following the ruling, Cobalt helped with 88 procedures. Cobalt also helps people with what they call “practical support,” which includes travel expenses such as flights and gas, child care and hotel room costs. Between June 24 and Aug. 11, the organization provided practical support funding to 315 people, totaling $101,056. Some of the clients who received practical support overlapped with those who received procedural support. The data show that 66% of … [Read more...] about Colorado picking up the tab for abortion bans in other states, reproductive rights group says
Roe fell and the phones started ringing. Colorado abortion clinics hit with out-of-state demand
Within an hour of news breaking that the U.S. Supreme Court had struck down Roe v. Wade, the phones at the Boulder Valley Women’s Health Center started ringing. Not just one or two calls, but at least a dozen — coming from states where patients had appointments scheduled, but had to cancel them and scramble to find alternatives after the ruling stripped away constitutional protections for abortion and allowed states with trigger bans to immediately outlaw the procedure. The Boulder clinic only performs abortion procedures on Fridays and usually has same-day appointments open. Now, two weeks after the ruling, they’re scheduled at least a week out and staff is double-booking in case of cancellations. Dr. Kelly Peters, the clinic’s medical director, said she’s grateful to live in a supportive state like Colorado, but it’s important to keep talking about the need for abortion services and compassionate care. “The only good thing that I see right now is that it is making people angry … [Read more...] about Roe fell and the phones started ringing. Rep. Jerry Nadler Tells Members To ‘Mute Themselves’ After Someone Curses Into Hot Mic
Democratic New York Rep. Jerry Nadler instructed all members of the House Judiciary Committee to mute their microphones during a Wednesday hearing after someone was heard cursing in the background. During a roll call vote on an amendment to the Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act , the office of an unknown member could be heard via a teleconference application. A person then apparently spoke into the application, “Where did that fucking go?” The comments interrupted the roll call, forcing Democratic California Rep. Karen Bass to repeat her vote. “I remind all members to mute themselves,” Nadler said. WATCH: The Domestic Terrorism Prevention Act, which creates new offices within the Department of Homeland Security, passed out of the committee along party lines. Democratic leadership in the House of Representatives has given members the option to participate in hearings remotely since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, and has also instituted proxy voting, … [Read more...] about Rep.
