(AP) — The Louisiana Supreme Court on Friday denied an appeal filed by plaintiffs in the ongoing legal battle over the state’s abortion ban, allowing the ban to stay in effect. The ruling marked a major blow to abortion-rights advocates and providers, who had hoped the ban would be blocked for a third time, allowing Louisiana’s three abortion clinics to begin performing procedures again. “While it is disappointing that four of the seven justices, without any written explanation, issued a ruling that will effectively deny critical care to women throughout Louisiana, the litigation continues and we are confident we can affect meaningful change,” Joanna Wright, an attorney for the plaintiff, said Friday afternoon in addition to confirming the court's ruling. Following news of the ruling, Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry — a defendant in the case — tweeted … [Read more...] about Louisiana Supreme Court rejects appeal in abortion ban case

Christopher Wray Slams ‘Deplorable’ Threats; Allowed Left to Harass Supreme Court
FBI Director Christopher Wray has denounced “deplorable” threats against federal law enforcement agencies and personnel that he says have appeared since the FBI raided former President Donald Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, on Monday. On Wednesday, Wray called such threats, which have appeared on social media, “deplorable and dangerous.” (The apparent irony of the use of the word “deplorable” — once used by Hillary Clinton to mock Trump supporters — was evident lost.) However, when faced with criticism from Republicans that the FBI was not doing enough to protect conservative Supreme Court justices from protests outside their private homes — which are illegal under federal law — Wray shrugged at the risk. The protests began appearing earlier this year, when a draft decision overturning Roe v. Wade was leaked. The protests are aimed at conservative justices who joined the majority opinion in the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization case. Earlier this … [Read more...] about Christopher Wray Slams ‘Deplorable’ Threats; Allowed Left to Harass Supreme Court
California governor nominates first Latina as state’s Supreme Court chief justice
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday nominated Patricia Guerrero to be the state’s next chief justice, picking the daughter of Mexican immigrants to lead the nation’s largest judicial system. Guerrero, 50, would replace Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye, who will step down once her term ends in January. Guerrero made history earlier this year when she was the first Latina confirmed to the California Supreme Court. Now she’s poised to do it again as the first Latina to lead the state’s sprawling court system that includes about 2,175 judges across 58 trial courts and 105 justices on the Courts of Appeal. “Justice Guerrero has established herself as a widely respected jurist with a formidable intellect and command of the law and deep commitment to equal justice and public service,” Newsom said in a news release announcing Guerrero’s nomination. Unlike the U.S. Supreme Court, California judges are not confirmed by the Legislature and do not … [Read more...] about California governor nominates first Latina as state’s Supreme Court chief justice
Eco-sensitive zones | Centre to file review petition in Supreme Court, says Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav
Union Minister of Environment, Forest and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav has said the Ministry will file a review petition in the Supreme Court urging a relook into its judgment on eco-sensitive zones. Speaking at the observance of the World Elephant Day at the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Thekkady on Friday, Mr. Yadav said the Centre would seek a review of Sections 44A and 44E of the judgment as more clarity was required on the issue. The Sections pertained to the directive to notify eco-sensitive zones (ESZ) of minimum 1 km from the demarcated boundaries of protected areas, and the exemption provided for ongoing activities within the proposed ESZ, provided they did not figure on the ‘prohibited list’. Mr. Yadav added that a committee had been formed to adopt a ‘holistic’ approach on the reports of the Kasturirangan and Gagdil committees for the conservation of the Western Ghats. Mining Lease Row: SC to Hear on Aug 17 Pleas of Soren, J’khand Against Court Order for Probe
The Supreme Court on Friday said it will hear on August 17 the separate pleas of the Jharkhand government and Chief Minister Hemant Soren against an order of the high court which accepted the maintainability of a PIL for a probe against the JMM leader who has been accused of granting himself a mining lease as the state’s mining minister. The matter came up for hearing before a bench of Justices U U Lalit and S R Bhat. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for the Jharkhand government, told the bench it is a “motivated” public interest litigation (PIL) which needs to be “thrown out”. The apex court said a copy of the petition along with annexures and the pleadings exchanged by the parties be placed on record. BJP national vice president and former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das had in February this year claimed Soren abused his position and granted himself the favour of a mining lease, an issue involving both the conflict of interest and corruption. Former India Players Support the Move to Allow Voting Rights in AIFF Elections
Former and current India footballers, including the legendary Bhaichung Bhutia and Sandesh Jhingan, on Friday welcomed the move to grant ex-players the voting rights in the AIFF elections following Supreme Court’s order, even though the state associations are not happy with it.The Supreme Court had on August 3 directed holding of elections to the executive committee of the AIFF by forming an Electoral College made up of 36 representatives of state football associations and 36 eminent former football players. The world governing body FIFA had, however, said in an earlier letter to the AIFF that having equal number of state association representatives and former players in the electoral college “is not a prudent idea” though it had agreed to having 25 per cent eminent player representation in its Executive Committee as co-opted members instead of the 50 per cent stipulated in the draft constitution. “I welcome the verdict of the Honourable Supreme Court of India to grant voting … [Read more...] about Former India Players Support the Move to Allow Voting Rights in AIFF Elections
‘Freebies’ can be lifesavers during dire times: Election Commission
What is considered "freebies" in normal times can be lifesavers during a disaster or a pandemic, the Election Commission of India (ECI) told the Supreme Court on Wednesday.
