Supreme Court Strikes Down Minnesota Law Restricting Voters’ Clothing

· June 14, 2018 ·

The Supreme Court has struck down a Minnesota law that restricted what voters can wear to polls. The justices ruled Thursday that the law violates the First Amendment. Still, the justices' 7-2 ruling suggested that some restrictions on what people can wear to vote are permissible. Most states have laws restricting what voters can wear to cast their ballots but Minnesota's law is one of the broadest. It bars voters from casting a ballot wearing clothing with the name of a candidate or political party or related to an issue on the ballot. Minnesota voters also can't wear clothing promoting a group with recognizable political views. The state had defended its law as a reasonable restriction that keeps order at polling places and prevents voter intimidation. Schumer: Supreme Court Is Becoming Politically Polarized

· June 27, 2018 ·

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer accused the Supreme Court of becoming increasingly political, and helping the “hard right” meet its goals, The Hill is reporting. "Anyone watching the bench at the moment ought to be shaking their heads at the political polarization of the court," Schumer, D-NY, said. "The (Chief Justice John) Roberts court has affirmed a plainly discriminatory travel ban, unleashed a flood of dark unlimited money in our politics, and has scrapped a key pillar of the Voting Rights Act.” "All goals of the hard right, all that have little to do with the Constitution or reading the law, all making America a more polarized, economically divided country." The court ruled Wednesday that government workers can't be required to contribute to labor unions that represent them in collective bargaining. A day earlier the court had upheld President Donald Trump's ban on travel from several mostly Muslim nations. … [Read more...] about Schumer: Supreme Court Is Becoming Politically Polarized

GOP’s Long-Term Supreme Court Strategy Pays Off: Analysis

· June 28, 2018 ·

Three years of political upheaval. Early morning Twitter blasts. Scores of startling headlines. For the Republican Party, all the chaos of the Trump era has been building toward a week like this. The party's long-term strategy to focus on the Supreme Court — highlighted by an audacious decision not to allow a vote in 2016 on President Barack Obama's judicial pick — culminated this week with a series of conservative rulings and another vacancy. With Justice Anthony Kennedy set to retire at the end of next month, President Donald Trump is poised to appoint his second justice in as many years, giving conservatives a potential bulwark on the bench that could offset national demographic trends that appear set to favor Democrats in the decades ahead. Though Trump, who has little fixed ideology, has been an unpredictable and at times frustrating governing partner for the Republican leadership, he has largely adhered to GOP orthodoxy when it comes to judicial appointments, … [Read more...] about GOP’s Long-Term Supreme Court Strategy Pays Off: Analysis

Maine Senator Marches in July 4th Parade, Talks About New Supreme Court Justice Appointment

· July 4, 2018 ·

In Bangor, Maine, Independence Day was not free from politics – as Senator Susan Collins, R-Maine, marched in a July 4th parade and faced questions about her position on a new Supreme Court Justice. "I understand just how important this appointment to the Supreme Court is,” she said. After the announcement that perceived swing-voter Justice Anthony Kennedy would be retiring, Collins was thrust into the national spotlight, seen as a Republican willing to break from her party. “I can only do what I think is right,” she said. A woman carrying her son confronted Scott Pruitt, the head of the EPA, at a Washington, D.C. restaurant and urged him to resign "before your scandals push you out." (Published Tuesday, July 3, 2018) President Trump’s pick to replace Justice Kennedy can change the balance of the court, and some worry a conservative-majority will overturn the landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights case. Collins said a woman’s right to choose is … [Read more...] about Maine Senator Marches in July 4th Parade, Talks About New Supreme Court Justice Appointment

Wisconsin Supreme Court Says Fired Conservative Professor Should Be Reinstated

· July 6, 2018 ·

The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled Friday that Marquette University shouldn't have fired a conservative professor over his blog post that criticized a student instructor he believed shut down discussion about opposition to gay marriage. The 120-page ruling concluded that the Catholic school breached its contract guaranteeing academic freedom with former professor John McAdams. The court said McAdams should immediately be reinstated. The court's decision came down on ideological lines. The conservative majority sided with McAdams, saying the faculty panel that recommended his discipline had an "unacceptable bias." The liberal justices called the decision "far-reaching," and said academic freedom "does not protect McAdams from discipline." McAdams sued the university in 2016, arguing that he lost his job for exercising freedom of speech. Marquette argued that he wasn't fired for the content of his 2014 post, but because he named the instructor and linked to her personal website … [Read more...] about Wisconsin Supreme Court Says Fired Conservative Professor Should Be Reinstated
