Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access

May 17, 2022 by www.latimes.com

One day after the draft Supreme Court decision that would overturn Roe vs. Wade leaked, Pennsylvania Democrat Josh Shapiro declared that his bid to become governor was the only thing preventing Republicans from restricting abortion access in the state. “The next governor is going to have a bill on their desk that will restrict or outlaw abortion rights, and they will have a decision as to whether to sign it or veto it,” he told reporters this month. “I will, of course, veto it. My opponents would sign it.” If the landmark 1973 Roe vs. Wade decision guaranteeing protection of abortion rights is overturned, abortion policy will be set by states, where Republicans hold the majority of legislatures and governorships. But in a handful of states, particularly Pennsylvania and Kansas, the winner of the November gubernatorial races could have a significant impact, vetoing or signing into law abortion legislation that would affect millions of people of reproductive age both in their … [Read more...] about Pennsylvania governor’s race could have outsize impact on abortion access

Dr. John Cheng, man killed in California church shooting, called a hero

May 17, 2022 by www.denverpost.com

LAGUNA WOODS, Calif. — A gunman motivated by hatred against Taiwan chained shut the doors of a California church and hid firebombs before shooting at a gathering of mostly elderly Taiwanese parishioners, killing a man who tackled him, authorities said. David Chou, 68, of Las Vegas — a U.S. citizen whom authorities say grew up in Taiwan — drove to Orange County on Saturday and the next day attended a lunch held by Irvine Taiwanese Presbyterian Church, which worships at Geneva Presbyterian Church in the community of Laguna Woods. Though he knew no one there, he spent about an hour mingling with about 40 attendees and then executed his plot, authorities said at a news conference. He chained the doors and put super glue in the keyholes. He had two 9 mm handguns — legally purchased years ago in Las Vegas — and three bags, containing among other things four Molotov-cocktail-type incendiary devices and extra ammunition. He opened fire and in the ensuing chaos Dr. John Cheng, 52, tackled … [Read more...] about Dr. John Cheng, man killed in California church shooting, called a hero

FDA clears COVID booster shot for healthy kids ages 5 to 11

May 17, 2022 by www.sfchronicle.com

U.S. regulators on Tuesday authorized a COVID-19 booster shot for healthy 5- to 11-year-olds, hoping an extra vaccine dose will enhance their protection as infections once again creep upward. Everyone 12 and older already was supposed to get one booster dose for the best protection against the newest coronavirus variants -- and some people, including those 50 and older, can choose a second booster. The Food and Drug Administration’s authorization now opens a third shot of Pfizer's vaccine to elementary-age kids, too — at least five months after their last dose. There is one more hurdle: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention must decide whether to formally recommend the booster for this age group. The CDC’s scientific advisers are scheduled to meet on Thursday. Pfizer and its partner BioNTech make the only COVID-19 vaccine available for children of any age i n the U.S. Those ages 5 to 11 receive one-third of the dose given to everyone 12 and older. Whether … [Read more...] about FDA clears COVID booster shot for healthy kids ages 5 to 11

Treasury ministers suggest no imminent new help to ease cost-of-living pressures

May 17, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

Rishi Sunak and his Treasury ministers have suggested new measures to help ease cost-of-living pressures are being developed but will not be introduced imminently. Chief Secretary to the Treasury Simon Clarke said the Chancellor will bring forward a programme of measures at a time when they will “make the right difference in a targeted way”. Mr Sunak later said he “stands ready to do more” but said this is part of a “broader plan”. The Office for National statistics recorded inflation at 7% in March and on Wednesday it is expected to unveil a figure of 8% for April. The Bank of England has said inflation is likely to peak at 10.25% during the final quarter of 2022. Piece of paper and metal foil is all you need to eavesdrop 6G transmissions

May 17, 2022 by www.newsweek.com

The new high-tech 6G wireless technology could be hacked in five minutes using a piece of office paper, an inkjet printer, a metallic foil transfer, and a laminator. The security flaw which would allow hackers to eavesdrop on 6G wireless signals was discovered by engineering researchers from Rice University and Brown University, who will present their findings and demonstrate the attack this week in San Antonio at ACM WiSec 2022, the Association for Computing Machinery's annual conference on security and privacy in wireless and mobile networks. Study co-author Edward Knightly, Rice's Sheafor-Lindsay professor of electrical and computer engineering, said: "Awareness of a future threat is the first step to counter that threat." "The frequencies that are vulnerable to this attack aren't in use yet, but they are coming and we need to be prepared." In the study, Knightly, Brown University engineering professor Daniel Mittleman and colleagues showed an attacker could easily make a … [Read more...] about Piece of paper and metal foil is all you need to eavesdrop 6G transmissions

By AMY TAXIN and STEFANIE DAZIO LAGUNA WOODS, Calif. (AP) — Prosecutors have charged the suspect in the California church shooting with one count of first-degree murder and five counts of attempted murder. Orange County District Attorney Todd Spitzer also announced Tuesday that David Chou, 68, of Las Vegas faces an enhancement for “lying in wait,” as well as four counts of possessing destructive devices with intent to kill or harm. Arraignment is expected later Tuesday. “We typically think of the person who hides in the bushes,” Spitzer said. “This case is about the person concealing themselves in plain view.” Authorities have said Chou — a U.S. citizen whom authorities say grew up in Taiwan — was motivated by hatred of Taiwanese people. A federal hate crimes investigation is also ongoing. If convicted as charged and a jury finds the enhancements to be true, Chou would face a sentence of either life in prison without possibility of parole or the death penalty, Spitzer … [Read more...] about Suspect charged in deadly California church shooting

Sexual misconduct allegations against presidents have a long history; George H.W. Bush is latest

October 25, 2017 by www.newsweek.com

Former President George H.W. Bush was accused this week of sexually assaulting a woman and the man now sitting in the Oval Office has more than a dozen women accusing him of sexual misconduct. But long before public allegations against presidents became more common, the legacy of alleged sexual abuse and harassment from men leading the nation stretches back to America's earliest days, spanning leaders both iconic and obscure. Here's a look at the long history of presidential allegations: 1. Thomas Jefferson One of the Founding Fathers was a rapist. Historians often talk discuss Sally Heming's "relationship" with President Thomas Jefferson, or refer to her as his "mistress." In reality, Hemings was Jefferson's slave who he raped whenever he wanted and later impregnated with six children born into slavery. "Romanticizing Hemings and Jefferson's so-called relationship minimizes the deadly imbalance of power that black people suffered under before the Civil War," Britni … [Read more...] about Sexual misconduct allegations against presidents have a long history; George H.W.
