Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky urged the West to stop playing around with Russia and impose tougher sanctions on Moscow to end its "senseless war" in Ukraine, adding his country would remain independent, the only question was at what price. Mr. Zelensky's criticism of the West has mounted in recent days as the European Union moves slowly towards a possible Russian oil embargo and as thousands of Russian forces try to encircle two key eastern cities of Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk. Meanwhile, United States officials say the Biden administration is aiming to lead the international bloc opposed to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine into a broader coalition to counter what it sees as a more serious, long-term threat to global order from China. Her daughter was shot on live TV. Now she’s marching to demand gun control
Alison Parker had a close relationship with her mom. On Mother's Day in 2015, she took both of her parents wine-tasting and hiking around the Blue Ridge Mountains in Virginia. And every Monday, she met her mom after her morning shift ended at the local news station to share lunch and do some shopping. "Those are the things I miss," Barbara Parker tells Newsweek . The world watched in horror when Alison, a 24-year-old reporter, was fatally shot on live TV on August 26, 2015, along with her colleague Adam Ward, a 27-year-old photojournalist, both with WDBJ7. The two were conducting a live interview at Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, Virginia, when a gunman approached and killed them. The suspect, later identified as a former employee at their Roanoke news station, fatally shot himself before police could apprehend him. Much of the aftermath of the shooting played out on social media, as the suspect posted video footage and updates to Twitter as he fled. UK weather forecast: Jubilee weekend in jeopardy as rain moves to ‘all areas’ next week
Brits looking forward to an extended Bank Holiday weekend for the Queen's Platinum Jubilee may be faced with a washout and colder temperatures. The Met Office forecast predicting the weather next week does say there is a possibility of sunshine if a high pressure is dominant to the west of the country, coming in from the Atlantic, as it is still early to be sure what will happen. But if a low pressure over the Azores comes closer, then it is likely to bring showers for the whole country with Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern calling it a "loose cannon". The UK will enjoy a four-day Bank Holiday weekend beginning on Thursday June 2 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 70 years on the throne. Events are being planned up and down the country for the historic occasion. The uncertainty is over a low pressure system around the Azores ( Image: WX Charts) Mr McGivern said that colder and rainy weather will start moving in from Sunday and then it will be quite unsettled … [Read more...] about UK weather forecast: Jubilee weekend in jeopardy as rain moves to ‘all areas’ next week
Daughter of woman stabbed 70 times ‘will never get the chance to know her mum’
The grieving daughter of a woman stabbed to death 70 times by her partner in a frenzied, drug-fuelled attack says she has been robbed of a chance to get to know her mum. Simone Ambler, 49, was found dead following an argument with her partner Donald Payne, 62, on March 29 last year. Payne stabbed Simone 70 times before calling 999 for an ambulance - telling the operator he had stabbed her 'a couple of times'. When police and paramedics arrived, they were met with a devastating scene. Simone was fatally wounded and Payne was sitting in an armchair, his hands, feet and jeans covered in blood. On the arm of the chair lay the knife he had used to kill her. Mum-of-two Simone was pronounced dead at the scene. Payne was arrested on suspicion of murder but later pleaded guilty to manslaughter by way of diminished responsibility, Lancashire Live reports. But as the killer began his life sentence, Simone's daughter Lauren Turner spoke of her sadness she would never spend any … [Read more...] about Daughter of woman stabbed 70 times ‘will never get the chance to know her mum’
Governor saw deadly arrest video months before prosecutors
Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards and his top lawyers privately watched a key video of Black motorist Ronald Greene drawing his final breaths in his deadly 2019 arrest six months before prosecutors even knew the footage existed. While the Democratic governor has distanced himself from allegations of a cover-up in the explosive case by contending evidence was promptly turned over to authorities, an Associated Press investigation found that neither Edwards, his staff nor the state police he oversees acted urgently to get the crucial footage into the hands of those with the power to charge the white troopers seen stunning, punching and dragging Greene. The video shows a bruised and bloody Greene going limp and drawing his final breaths — critical moments and audio that are absent from other footage turned over. It wouldn't reach prosecutors until nearly two years after Greene’s May 10, 2019, death on a rural roadside near Monroe. Now three years have passed and still no … [Read more...] about Governor saw deadly arrest video months before prosecutors
Massive underwater volcano home to ‘mutant sharks’ erupts in depths of Pacific Ocean
A huge underwater volcano has erupted deep within the Pacific Ocean sending plumes of water towards the surface seen from outer space. NASA satellite images captured the magnificent explosion of the Kavachi volcano, nicknamed Sharkano. A large plume of discoloured water can be seen emerging from the underwater volcano, which lies 15 miles south of Vangunu Island. Kavachi got its name from the sea creatures that are able to live within its harsh conditions and live deep within the ocean among floating fragments of rock. Scientists became familiar with the volcano in a 2015 oceanic study. Their findings revealed how fish and sharks can survive in the hot, sulphur infused, acidic waters surrounding the volcano. Two shark species, the silky and scalloped hammerhead, were filmed swimming in the submerged crater during a field trip. Brits are set to be battered by three days of thunderstorms, heavy rain and gale force winds as a “revved up jet stream” brings in the storms from the Atlantic.
