No star, no problem: Rogue planets could incubate life for billions of years
Scientists once assumed that the best place to look for extraterrestrial life would be planets within their star ’s habitable, or “Goldilocks” zone, that narrow range of orbits where water remains liquid on a planet ’s surface. Around our Sun , the habitable zone stretches from just outside the orbit of Venus to just outside the orbit of Mars, with Earth squarely in the middle. But new research suggests scientists searching for habitable planets should look outside habitable zones — way outside. In a paper published Monday in the journal Nature astronomy, researchers from the universities of Bern and Zurich conclude that certain super Earth exoplanets — rocky planets between 2 and 10 times Earth’s mass — could remain habitable for forms of life at distances 10 times that of Earth from the Sun. Some planets could even remain habitable for tens of billions of years after getting expelled from their solar system, becoming strange oases wandering interstellar … [Read more...] about No star, no problem: Rogue planets could incubate life for billions of years

‘I sell snaps of my thumbs for £4,000 on OnlyFans – people are going wild over them’
A woman who once felt "embarrassed" by her super bendy thumbs now claims to be able to rake in thousands with them through Onlyfans. Allie Rae, 39, made the switch from nursing to Onlyfans back in Sept 2020, with things really taking off after she began uploading videos she'd made with her husband. However, only recently did Allie realise the effect her "crazy bendy" thumbs had on some people, with her rare digits proving to be extremely lucrative. According to Allie, one man paid £4,074 ($5,000) for custom thumb snaps, and was so thrilled with them, that he ended up ordering another batch. After being inundated by thumb fans, Allie made an additional £6,326 ($8,000) from pics and vids of her rare thumbs posed on a steering wheel, or simply holding things. Belgium: Over 35,000 Girls Either Victims or At Risk of FGM
A study has revealed that over 35,000 girls in Belgium have either been victims of female genital mutilation (FGM) or are at risk of becoming victims, a number that has steadily increased in recent years. The figures come from a report presented by FPS Public Health and the Institute for the Equality of Women and Men and presented alongside Belgian Secretary of State for Gender Equality Sarah Schlitz, who revealed significant growth in those who are victims or at risk of being victims of FGM. A previous study from 2016 claimed that 17,575 women and girls were “mostly likely circumcised” while 8,342 were at risk of FGM. According to the figures, the number of victims and those at risk has steadily increased since records began in 2007, newspaper 7sur7 reports . Across China: Farmers breathe life into soil in old coal-mining area
YINCHUAN, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Dawukou District in the city of Shizuishan, northwest China's Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, is known for the saline and alkaline land located at the foot of Helan Mountain that is very hostile to agriculture. The district, part of an old coal-mining region that closed five years ago, has taken up the challenge of transforming the local economy, embracing green agriculture despite the poor soil and lack of water. Shizuishan was one of the 10 coal mining bases authorized by the Chinese government in the 1950s when large-scale coal mines were built at the foot of Helan Mountain. All the mines were shut down in 2017 due to the damage they caused to the local environment and farmland. In recent years, backed by a government campaign of "building a prosperous countryside," local farmers have been working on ecological recovery, turning the vast tracts of saline and alkaline land into a base for vegetable farming and fish breeding. In Zaoxiang Village, … [Read more...] about Across China: Farmers breathe life into soil in old coal-mining area
Bride charges guests £100 to attend £40k wedding – on top of flights and hotel
A bride-to-be has declared she's charging her wedding guests £100 each to attend her upcoming ceremony - as she wants to try and " save money " on the event, which already has a budget of £40,000. Carla Bellucci , 40, is set to tie the knot with her 52-year-old fiancé Giovanni but has said that her 30 guests won't be able to get into the venue for free on the day, as they'll all have to contribute £100 if they want to see her get married . That price tag is on top of the cash each guest will have to pay for flights and accommodation to Carla's destination wedding, as the ceremony will take place in Cape Verde, Africa, in July next year. In total, the mum-of-four will take £3,000 for her guests, which she says will help ensure she can have "the best of everything" at her "dream" wedding without having to break the bank herself. How to treat unpaid work
Women everywhere carry a disproportionately higher burden of unpaid work , namely, unpaid domestic services as well as unpaid care of children, the old and the disabled for their respective households. Though this work contributes to overall well-being at the household level and collectively at the national level, it is invisible in the national database and particularly in national policies. This work is repetitive, boring and frequently drudgery — a 24-hour job without remuneration, promotions or retirement benefits. It restricts opportunities for women in the economy and in life. Women do this job not necessarily because they like it or are efficient in it, but because it is imposed on them by patriarchal norms, which are the roots of all pervasive gender inequalities. This unequal division of unpaid work between women and men is unfair and unjust and it deprives women of equal opportunities as men.
