Taiwan displayed on Wednesday its most advanced fighter jet, the missile-equipped F-16V, in a rare nighttime demonstration in the wake of China’s unprecedented military drills around the island. Beijing staged days of air and sea drills in the Taiwan Strait this month after visits by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and a congressional delegation to the self-ruled island territory. Taipei has carried out its own drills to simulate defence against invasion by China and on Wednesday air force personnel loaded an F-16V fighter with a US-made anti-ship missile in a “combat readiness” exercise at an airbase in eastern Hualien county. Six F-16Vs later took off for night reconnaissance and training missions, including two armed with missiles, according to Taiwan’s air force. “In the face of the threat from Chinese communist forces’ recent military exercises, we have stayed vigilant while establishing the concept of ‘battlefields everywhere and training anytime’… to ensure national … [Read more...] about Taiwan Shows Off Most Advanced Fighter Jet After China Drills

‘Superpower in Its Downfall’: China Celebrates Anniversary of Biden Afghanistan Disaster
China’s state-run Global Times took a victory lap on Monday, the one-year anniversary of President Joe Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan, hailing the debacle as the death of American “hegemony” and a humiliation the United States will never overcome. One editorial from the Global Times excitedly claimed the “international community” was permanently turned off by “the U.S.’ irresponsible hasty withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan,” leaving the unfortunate residents of that country to suffer “endless trauma” caused by the botched American occupation. The Global Times and its stable of “Chinese experts” argued the “Kabul moment” showed that America’s playbook of “democratic transformation” will never work anywhere, the American “strategy of hegemony” is a bust, and while Biden might have thought he was escaping from a quagmire, he instead made the United States perpetually responsible for the misery of the Afghan people. The Chinese paper … [Read more...] about ‘Superpower in Its Downfall’: China Celebrates Anniversary of Biden Afghanistan Disaster
Chinese Research Ship on ‘Mission of Peace and Friendship’ to Sri Lanka; to Boost Bilateral Space, S&T Exchanges: Captain
China’s high-tech research vessel ‘Yuan Wang 5’ is on a “mission of peace and friendship” and its docking at a Sri Lankan port will deepen bilateral relations in the field of space, science and technology, according to the controversial ship’s captain. Chinese ballistic missile and satellite tracking ship ‘Yuan Wang 5’ is berthed at Sri Lanka’s strategic southern port of Hambantota. The ship arrived on Tuesday and will be docked at the Chinese-run port till August 22, amidst security concerns expressed by India. The ship was originally scheduled to arrive at the port on August 11 but it was delayed in absence of permission by the Sri Lankan authorities. On August 13, the Sri Lankan government granted the port access to the vessel from August 16 to 22 on condition that it will keep the Automatic Identification System (AIS) switched on within the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Sri Lanka and no scientific research to be conducted in Sri Lankan waters. The ship is to remain at … [Read more...] about Chinese Research Ship on ‘Mission of Peace and Friendship’ to Sri Lanka; to Boost Bilateral Space, S&T Exchanges: Captain
Will PM Modi and Shehbaz Sharif Meet on SCO Sidelines in Samarkand?
Any time the leaders of India and Pakistan (or China) are slated to attend a regional or multilateral event, the media and strategy community dive headlong into a high-decibel speculation about the possibility of a bilateral meeting. Though not formally confirmed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit at Samarkand, Uzbekistan in mid-September 2022, when India inter alia is to assume presidency of the organisation as well as host the 2023 summit. The newly minted Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to attend, triggering another round of ‘talkathon’. A similar speculation had ensued before the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (June 13-14 2019) which was attended by Modi and Sharif’s predecessor Imran Khan. No meeting eventually materialised, except for a brief exchange of pleasantries in the delegates’ lounge. That too was disclosed not by India but the Pakistani foreign minister. … [Read more...] about Will PM Modi and Shehbaz Sharif Meet on SCO Sidelines in Samarkand?
The New Great Game: Free World Needs Quad-Like Alliances to Confront Chinese Threats
A new 21st century foreign policy is being written in the background of the battle lines being drawn in the Indo-Pacific. The ‘Great Game’ now stretches from Afghanistan to this vast area of immense geopolitical significance. The Indo-Pacific is marked by a precarious geometry of fault-lines and historic strategic mistrust. It has become the centre of China’s efforts to establish its pre-eminence as the dominant, indeed, sole superpower. What is the geographic scope of the Indo-Pacific? It is generally agreed that it extends from the east coast of Africa to the west coast of the Americas. Drawing precise geographic borderlines is not important since the Indo-Pacific is primarily a geostrategic concept. It is the core and nerve centre of international geopolitics and a new global power game. It is encircled by major population centres. Eight of the top twenty economies are situated here, giving it immense geo-economic importance. New threats and challenges to the existing world … [Read more...] about The New Great Game: Free World Needs Quad-Like Alliances to Confront Chinese Threats
A different angle on Pelosi’s trip
Nam Jeong-ho The author is a columnist of the JoongAng Ilbo. There has been much discussion about President Yoon Suk-yeol not making time to meet visiting U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who flew to Seoul on Aug. 3 after she defied Beijing to make a visit to Taiwan where she lambasted China for human rights violations. Critics speculated that Yoon had avoided a problematic meeting with Pelosi citing his summer break so as not to irk Beijing. They say that Yoon not meeting with Pelosi impairs the South Korea-U.S. alliance. Although they have a point, Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan must not be interpreted as a move representing the U.S. government. President Joe Biden as well as his foreign and security aides, military and mainstream U.S. media like the New York Times and the Washington Post have all opposed her visit to Taiwan. They did not think it was wise to unnecessarily provoke China at a time the U.S. was engaged indirectly with a war with Russia over its invasion of Ukraine. … [Read more...] about A different angle on Pelosi’s trip
