You can say this about Elton Brand following his introductory presser at the Sixers' practice facility on Thursday — he absolutely has the respect of the people within his organization. The new GM stepped to the podium with a cavalcade of Sixers staffers and employees lining the room, a rare sight even for an announcement as impactful as this one. It was that same respect and admiration that Sixers owner Joshua Harris harped on again and again as he explained the decision to hire Brand over a field of candidates — 10 were interviewed for the job, per Harris — that universally had more front office experience than the man they hired. Harris used words like "integrity" and "relationships" over and over again, almost as if he was trying to emphasize the departure from the previous burner-happy regime. But it was Harris' response to the opening question of the presser that fascinates me, at least until Brand establishes his managerial track record and gives the public … [Read more...] about Questions about Sixers’ power structure remain following Elton Brand, Joshua Harris presser
LOS ANGELES — Rockies shortstop Trevor Story got the results from his MRI that was taken Tuesday morning on his injured right elbow. Story has some inflammation and soreness in his elbow, but the joint remains intact and his ulnar collateral ligament appears fine. “We got pretty good results just moments ago. It looks as though there’s some inflammation, a little bit of soreness around the joint, but structurally the joint is intact and the (UCL) seems to be fine,” Rockies manager Bud Black said before Tuesday night’s game at Dodger Stadium. “It was a huge relief.” Black said Garrett Hampson, Pat Valaika and Ian Desmond are options at shortstop in Story’s absence. Hampson is starting Tuesday. “The team has to step up when he’s gone, and certain guys have to step up,” Hampson said. “I’m lucky to be that guy tonight. I’m ready for whatever my role is (at shortstop), and whoever it is out there … [Read more...] about Trevor Story’s MRI results show no structural damage to joint or elbow for the Rockies’ all-star

Chris Solari Detroit Free Press Published 9:13 AM EDT Sep 15, 2018 EAST LANSING — Michigan State looked to have Arizona State pinned. It was third-and-8 late in the fourth quarter, with the score tied and time winding down. The Spartans desperately needed to get a stop and deployed just two defensive lineman with four linebackers and five defensive backs anticipating the pass. It didn’t matter. Brandon Randle and Antjuan Simmons blitzed off the edge. Andrew Dowell followed the tight end across the formation. Joe Bachie and Jon Reschke drifted to their right. No one covered Eno Benjamin. The Sun Devils running back picked up 25 yards before getting tripped up, getting his team to midfield and keeping the drive alive. MSU never got the ball back, as Arizona State milked the clock from there to kick a game-winning field goal as time expired for the 16-13 upset on Saturday in Tempe, Arizona. That one play showed many of the 24th-ranked Spartans’ biggest weaknesses … [Read more...] about Michigan State pass defense struggling; structure to blame?
Home Daily News Judge cites consumer agency's structure in… Consumer Law By Debra Cassens Weiss Posted September 14, 2018, 3:50 pm CDT Andy Dean Photogrpahy/Shutterstock.com. New York’s attorney general will have to use state courts if the office wants to pursue RD Legal Funding, a company that provides advances to people expecting settlement money, a federal judge in New York has ruled. U.S. District Judge Loretta Preska ruled on Wednesday that there is no basis for federal jurisdiction after she struck down the Title X law creating the Bureau of Financial Protection and dismissed the agency from the suit. The New York Times covered the decision. The New York attorney general and the CFPB had together sued RD Legal Funding in February 2017. The suit had claimed the funding company had misrepresented the terms of its deals with Sept. 11 responders and professional football players with Alzheimer’s disease who were awaiting settlement money. Preska ruled in June … [Read more...] about Judge cites consumer agency’s structure in tossing suit accusing firm of misleading 9/11 responders
