A New York state regulator on Friday fined cruise line operator Carnival Corp $5 million for "significant" cybersecurity violations, following four security breaches from 2019 to 2021 that exposed substantial amounts of sensitive customer data. New York's Department of Financial Services said Carnival violated a state cybersecurity regulation by failing to use multi-factor authentication that would make it harder for wrongdoers to access its internal network. It also said Carnival failed to report one breach and conduct adequate cybersecurity awareness training for employees. The regulator said the failures caused Carnival to file improper cybersecurity compliance certifications from 2018 to 2020. Explained | What is gold recycling?
The story so far: The World Gold Council accorded India as the fourth largest recycler of gold, having recycled 75 tonnes of the valuable yellow metal in the previous year. As per the report titled ‘Gold refining and recycling’, India’s gold refining landscape has changed ‘notably’ in the past decade with formal operations increasing from less than 5 in 2013 to 33 in 2021. The import duty differential that gold doré has enjoyed over refined bullion has particularly accelerated the growth of organised refining in India. Helped by these tax incentives, about half of India’s new refining capacity opened up in Excise Free Zones (EFZs) in Uttarakhand since 2014. China topped the list having recycled about 168 million tonnes of gold in 2021. Italy stood second having recycled 80 million tonnes of gold in 2021, followed by the United States (78 million tonnes). For perspective, gold dorés are metal bars with high gold content. They are composed of a mixture of precious metals but … [Read more...] about Explained | What is gold recycling?
San Francisco archbishop bars Rep. Nancy Pelosi from receiving Communion over abortion rights stance
A long-simmering dispute between San Francisco’s Catholic leaders and the city’s elected officials escalated Friday when a Bay Area archbishop took the extraordinary step of barring House Speaker Nancy Pelosi from receiving Communion over her support for abortion access. The move, occurring just as the U.S. Supreme Court appears poised to overturn Roe vs. Wade, underscores deep divisions among Catholics over the issue. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone told Pelosi in a letter Thursday that she had not offered “an accommodation to my many requests to speak with you again since you vowed to codify the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision in federal law” after a Texas law effectively banning most abortions took effect last year. Cordileone said he had written to Pelosi in April warning her that he was prepared to bar her from receiving Communion. “As you have not publicly repudiated your position on abortion, and continue to refer to your Catholic faith in justifying your position and … [Read more...] about San Francisco archbishop bars Rep. NEWS18 EXPLAINS: Hong Kong’s Rocky Political Road Since The 1997 Handover
Hong Kong on July 1 will mark its 25th anniversary under Chinese rule. The financial hub returned to China from Britain in 1997, with promises of wide-ranging freedoms and autonomy under “one country, two systems” governance. Critics, including some Western governments, say China has reneged on those promises in recent years under a sweeping national security law. Authorities in Hong Kong and China reject those claims. WHAT ARE THE KEY POLITICAL MILESTONES? Hong Kong was wrested from China by Britain in three phases, starting with the mid-19th century Opium Wars. Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon peninsula were signed over in perpetuity. The larger rural New Territories and outlying islands were added under a 99-year lease in 1898. In 1984, Britain and China agreed that Hong Kong would be handed back at midnight on June 30, 1997. A mini-constitution, the Basic Law, was later drafted, guaranteeing Hong Kong’s capitalist way of life for 50 years as well as a high degree of autonomy, … [Read more...] about NEWS18 EXPLAINS: Hong Kong’s Rocky Political Road Since The 1997 Handover
NHS waiting times revealed on National Nurses Day – worst in country revealed
Record high waiting times are plaguing the NHS as people up and down the country wait for treatment , the highest since records began in August 2007. By the end of March, 6.4 million people were waiting to begin treatment, a figure that has increased from 6.2 million in February. A government plan is already in place to try and tackle the issues, but Health Secretary Sajid Javid has admitted they likely will not fall for another two years. Despite this, the NHS is claiming progress has been made as two-year wait times have fallen. NHS England medical director Professor Stephen Powis stressed the importance of helping people in hospital leave when they are able to. He said: "There is no doubt the NHS still faces pressures, and the latest figures are another reminder of the crucial importance of community and social care, in helping people in hospital leave when they are fit to do so, not just because it is better for them but because it helps free up precious NHS bed … [Read more...] about NHS waiting times revealed on National Nurses Day – worst in country revealed
Rewriting ‘old history’ for a New India
Recent investigative reports ( The Indian Express , June 19-22, 2022) bring to light proposals for deletions and changes to school textbooks across the board. The aim, purportedly, is to reduce the load on school students who have suffered a loss of learning due to extended shutdowns during the novel coronavirus pandemic. However, the changes made in the history textbooks specifically target certain areas of India’s past and will result in an ideological shift in history teaching at the school level. Curricular changes The Government is currently undertaking a series of curricular changes. The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, Women, Children, Youth and Sports recently tabled its Report on the Reforms in Content and Design of School Text books (November 30, 2021). The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) is already in the process of formulating the new National Curricular Framework, which will direct the syllabi of central and State … [Read more...] about Rewriting ‘old history’ for a New India

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 3 BOSTON (AP) — The developers of an offshore wind farm and three environmental organizations announced Monday that they have reached an agreement to further protect rare North Atlantic right whales during construction and operation of the energy-generating project. The agreement involving Orsted and Eversource — developers of South Fork Wind off the coast of New England and New York — was signed by the National Wildlife Federation, the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Conservation Law Foundation, the groups said in a joint statement. The agreement promotes the development of sustainable energy while protecting wildlife, said Alison Chase, a senior policy analyst at the NRDC. “We don’t need to choose between clean energy development and wildlife protection, and this agreement shows how we can do both," she said. There is estimated to be fewer than 340 North Atlantic … [Read more...] about Wind farm, environmentalists agree on ways to protect whales
