The city council of Haven, Kansas , voted 3-2 on Monday to reverse a unanimous decision they made May 2 to remove "In God We Trust" decals from the city's police cars following an uproar from some in the community. The city attorney said the Haven City Council's previous decision emerged from a desire to maintain a separation between church and state , according to local KWCH. The follow-up vote on Monday was not on the city council's original agenda, which had to move their weekly forum to a nearby community center because of how many attended. Seven people spoke at the typically uneventful meeting, where all but one supported the decals. The original motion was introduced by council member Sandra Williams, who expressed concern to Haven Police Chief Stephen … [Read more...] about Kansas town reverses decision removing ‘In God We Trust’ from police cars after uproar

A former gang member from Berkeley, California , has reportedly been arrested over hate crimes after posting threatening messages about Asians online. The Oakland Police Department said a Berkeley man was taken into custody after "social media partners" alerted them to "disturbing messages" directed at Asian communities online. Reginald Jackson, who police flagged as a gang member in previous investigations, shared a series of now-deleted and private posts on Twitter and Instagram that included references to beating up, robbing and blowing up Asians, according to ABC 7. Police records show that Jackson has a lengthy list of past felonies, including attempted robbery and weapons charges, including possession of an AR-15 assault rifle. Jackson was booked into the Santa Rita Jail on Monday and is being held without bail until his next court hearing on March 23, the records show. Tenants staying put for longer as rents rocket
Tenants are staying put for longer rather than being potentially hit with record rents by moving elsewhere, research from a property website suggests. The average monthly rent being advertised across Britain (excluding London) was a record £1,088 in the first quarter of 2022, marking an 11% annual increase, Rightmove said. In London , average asking rents have shot up by 14% annually to £2,195 per calendar month. There are also more than triple the number of tenants inquiring as there are rental properties available, making the market highly competitive, according to the website. The lack of stock stems from longer tenancies, coupled with demand from people who had previously put plans temporarily on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, it suggested. Joan Didion’s Magic Trick
This article was featured in One Story to Read Today, a newsletter in which our editors recommend a single must-read from The Atlantic , Monday through Friday. Sign up for it here. “T hink of this as a travel piece,” she might have written. “Imagine it in Sunset magazine: ‘Five Great California Stops Along the Joan Didion Trail.’ ” Or think of this as what it really is: a road trip of magical thinking. I had known that Didion’s Parkinson’s was advancing; seven or eight months earlier, someone had told me that she was vanishing; someone else had told me that for the past two years, she hadn’t been able to speak. I didn’t want her to die. My sense of myself is in many ways wrapped up in the 40 essays in Slouching Towards Bethlehem and The White Album . I don’t know how many times I’ve read Democracy . “Call me the author,” she writes in that novel. “Let the reader be introduced to Joan Didion.” There are people who admire Joan Didion, and people who … [Read more...] about Joan Didion’s Magic Trick
Younger clientele driving luxury car sales in India
Luxury automobile makers like Lamborghini, Mercedes Benz, and BMW, are all seeing strong demand for their models in the premium end, despite the COVID-related disruptions, largely due to a shift in customer profile to younger, first-generation entrepreneurs, who believe in the ‘you only live once’ philosophy. Varun Kalyanasundaram, a 33-year-old director at Chennai-based Polimer Media, bought his first luxury car nearly 10 years ago “because of the sheer driving pleasure, technology and most importantly comfort.” Mr. Kalyanasundaram currently owns a BMW X7, Mercedes Benz S class, Mercedes Benz GLS, an Audi E-tron, and is now eyeing the Mercedes Benz Maybach GLS. “I drive by myself. I don’t have a chauffeur. I like long drives and the pleasure of driving is most important. The technology should be included, but I need comfort. That is it.,” he says. Sharad Agarwal, Head, Lamborghini India, says there has been a shift in the customer profile over the years. “We are seeing younger, … [Read more...] about Younger clientele driving luxury car sales in India
Soccer-Five Eintracht Frankfurt fans arrested for public disorder in Seville
(Reuters) - Five Eintracht Frankfurt fans were arrested in Seville late on Tuesday after some 200 of the German club's supporters attacked Rangers fans on the eve of the Europa League final, Spanish police said. It was the first violent incident recorded in Seville ahead of Wednesday's game, police said, as southern Spain's largest city braces for the arrival of an expected 150,000 fans of the German and Scottish sides. "The incident took place around midnight in front of Seville Cathedral and the troops of the Police Intervention Units had to intervene quickly to stop the Eintracht Frankfurt fans who were assaulting supporters of Glasgow Rangers," Spain's National Police said in a statement on Wednesday. The German fans then attacked police, "throwing glass bottles, flares and tables" at the officers. Spain's chief of police has warned of the potential for "serious problems" in a policing operation that will be one of the most "difficult challenges" they have ever had. … [Read more...] about Soccer-Five Eintracht Frankfurt fans arrested for public disorder in Seville
Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
When a shooter attacked a supermarket in Buffalo, New York, over the weekend, its security guard tried to stop him. At least one of his shots hit the gunman, but it didn’t stop the deadly rampage because the gunman was wearing body armor. Ten Black people died in the racist massacre, including security guard Aaron Salter, a retired Buffalo police officer hailed as a hero. It’s the latest mass shooting in which the gunman apparently came prepared for anyone trying to stop him with a gun. At least 21 mass shooters over the last four decades have worn some kind of body armor — and the majority of those were within the last 10 years, according to a database maintained by The Violence Project, a nonpartisan research group that tracks gun violence. Among them: A massacre that killed 12 people and injured dozens more at a crowded movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, in 2012, and another in nearby Boulder that left 10 people dead at a supermarket last year. The shooter in Texas’s deadliest … [Read more...] about Buffalo is latest mass shooting by gunman wearing body armor
Final Taste Of The West: Russians Queue Up At McDonald’s Outlets Ahead Of Its Exit
Russians lined up in a Moscow train station on Tuesday for what may be their last Big Mac from one of the few McDonald’s restaurants still open in the country. The world’s largest burger chain is rolling down the shutters in Russia after more than 30 years, becoming one of the biggest global brands to leave following Moscow’s actions in Ukraine. McDonald’s exit ends a chapter in the U.S. company’s history that began when it started serving its burgers in Russia as a symbol of American capitalism. The company had already decided to temporarily close its restaurants in the country in March. They included the iconic Pushkin Square location in central Moscow, which broke global records when opening on Jan. 31, 1990, as more than 30,000 people queued around the block for Big Macs costing 3 roubles. “McDonald’s operates in few places now,” said 32-year-old Irina, who was queuing at the branch in Moscow’s Leningradsky Station, from where trains head north to St Petersburg. “I miss … [Read more...] about Final Taste Of The West: Russians Queue Up At McDonald’s Outlets Ahead Of Its Exit
