GM calls off plan to sell India car plant to China’s Great Wall

July 1, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

General Motors (GM) said on Friday it had called off the sale of a shuttered Indian plant to China’s Great Wall Motor after they failed to obtain regulatory approvals, amid a tougher stance by New Delhi towards investments from Beijing. GM struck a deal in January 2020 to sell the plant to Great Wall, with the Chinese SUV-maker expected to pay up to $300 million as part of a broader plan to invest $1 billion to establish a presence in India's growing car market. The agreement, which was extended twice, expired on June 30. “We have been unable to obtain the required approvals within the time frame of the deal,” George Svigos, executive director of communications at GM International, told Reuters . “Our strategy in India remains unchanged and we will now explore further options for the sale of the site,” he said, adding the company “hopes to achieve a price that reflects the value of the asset”. “Great Wall Motor will keep its attention to the Indian market in the future and … [Read more...] about GM calls off plan to sell India car plant to China’s Great Wall

Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers

July 1, 2022 by www.independent.co.uk

On Tuesday, Representative Liz Cheney led the questioning of former Trump administration aide Cassidy Hutchinson about the former actions on January 6, 2021. But on Thursday evening, she was the one hit with a hail of questions as she faced off against four different primary challengers trying to unseat her from Wyoming’s at-large congressional district. Cheney is persona non grata in the Republican Party thanks to her vote to impeach former president Donald Trump and her continued criticisms of the party’s fealty to him. Her apostasy has already seen her ousted as House Republican Conference chairwoman, and has led Trump and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to back her main challenger, Harriet Hageman. Yet despite all this, MCheney has doubled down on her critiques of the party – not least in a speech at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library this week, in which she described what has befallen the US as a tragedy. “And the tragedy is that there are politicians in … [Read more...] about Liz Cheney is walking a fine line as she tries to fend of primary challengers

Saving Chenkurinji from climate change

July 2, 2022 by www.thehindu.com

The Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary derives its name from Gluta travancorica , a species endemic to the Agasthyamala Biosphere Reserve known as ‘Chenkurinji’ in local parlance. Belonging to the Anacardiaceae family, the tree was once abundant in the hills on the southern parts of Aryankavu Pass but its presence has been fast receding from the area over the years. “ Gluta travancorica is very susceptible to climate change and the present condition of the species is quite bad with low regeneration performance,” says Dr. P. A. Jose, Principal Scientist, Sustainable Forest Management Division, Kerala Forest Research Institute (KFRI). Though there are seemingly enough number of the trees, most are not productive, generating a negative trend in its population. “Majority of the trees are old with poor flowering and fruiting rates. What we require now is an emergency restocking at the sanctuary since the present population is in a degrading state. At present, we have a few young … [Read more...] about Saving Chenkurinji from climate change
