Republicans rip Biden for fencing off Capitol before State of the Union

February 6, 2023 by www.newsweek.com

Prominent MAGA Republicans have called out President Joe Biden over fencing that was recently erected around the U.S. Capitol building in advance of his upcoming State of the Union address . The president is set to deliver his second State of the Union speech before Congress on Tuesday evening. This will also be his first address since the Republican Party gained a slim majority over the House of Representatives during last year's midterm elections, emboldening far-right members of the conference and presenting new challenges for the passage of legislation. Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Lauren Boebert of Colorado, two of the most outspoken far-right members of the House, called out Biden on Monday for the protective fencing that was put up around the Capitol building in Washington, D.C. The barricades were set in place on Sunday evening, as they have been several times in the last few years during times of elevated security risks. "The fence is … [Read more...] about Republicans rip Biden for fencing off Capitol before State of the Union

Hawaii firefighter dies after being swept into a storm drain while helping residents

February 6, 2023 by www.nbcnews.com

A Maui County firefighter has died more than a week after he was swept into a drain during a storm that brought flooding to the Hawaiian island, officials said in a statement . Tre' Evans-Dumaran, 24, was assisting residents on the island on Jan. 27 when he was swept away. He was eventually found where the drain ended 800 yards away near the shoreline at Kulanihakoi Street, according to the statement. A flood warning was in place for Maui at the time due to "hazardous weather" that included heavy rain and prompted road closures , Hawaii Gov. Josh Green's office said in a news release . Evans-Dumaran was in critical condition at the Maui Memorial Medical Center and "slowly making positive and promising signs of progress" until Saturday, when county officials confirmed his death . "We want to thank the entire community for the outpouring of love during this time," his mother, Chelsie Evans, said in a statement shared by the county. "My heart tells me that Tre’ … [Read more...] about Hawaii firefighter dies after being swept into a storm drain while helping residents

Legal Effort Expands to Disqualify Republicans as ‘Insurrectionists’

April 7, 2022 by www.nytimes.com

A legal effort to disqualify from re-election lawmakers who participated in events surrounding the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol expanded on Thursday, when a cluster of voters and a progressive group filed suit against three elected officials in Arizona to bar them under the 14th Amendment from running again. In three separate candidacy challenges filed in Superior Court in Maricopa County, Ariz., voters and the progressive group, Free Speech for People, targeted Representatives Paul Gosar and Andy Biggs and State Representative Mark Finchem , who is running for Arizona secretary of state with former President Donald J. Trump’s endorsement. It was unclear whether the challenges would go anywhere; an initial skirmish, also led by Free Speech for People, failed to block Representative Madison Cawthorn’s candidacy in North Carolina. But they were the latest bids to find a way to punish members of Congress who have encouraged or made common cause with those who stormed … [Read more...] about Legal Effort Expands to Disqualify Republicans as ‘Insurrectionists’

Investigators scouring online conspiracy theories for motive in N.C. substation attack

December 8, 2022 by www.nbcnews.com

Detectives probing the "targeted attacks" on two power stations last weekend that left thousands of North Carolina residents in the dark have been searching online for a possible motive, two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter told NBC News. The FBI is assisting local authorities as they sift through a host of online conspiracy theories to see if any served as a motivation for Saturday's gun attacks on two Duke Energy substations that knocked out power to thousands of homes and businesses in Moore County, the officials said. Almost immediately after the power went out around 8:15 p.m. Saturday, the prevailing theory that took hold on social media was that the outages were intended to shut down a drag performance at a theater in downtown Southern Pines, N.C. There had been weeks of threats and loud protests by far-right activists against the "Downtown Divas" drag show that was scheduled to take place that night at the Sunrise Theater. Suspicions were … [Read more...] about Investigators scouring online conspiracy theories for motive in N.C. substation attack
