SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The Latest on a Northern California storm (all times local):6:50 p.m.Heavy rain is falling in Northern California as a "Pineapple Express" storm system lashes the region. The National Weather Service says many areas have received about 2 inches (5 centimeters) of rain in the past 24 hours but Venado in Sonoma County has gotten nearly 5 inches (12 centimeters).Flooding has closed some roads and about 150 flights have been cancelled at San Francisco International Airport. Other flights have been delayed an hour or more. The rain also cancelled Friday night's San Francisco Giants game against the Los Angeles Dodgers.Meanwhile, officials are keeping an eye on Lake Oroville, where the storm may turn into the first test of a spillway that was destroyed last year and prompted a flooding scare. If their magnetic sense was thrown off, they could have become lost before getting … [Read more...] about Is The Sun Killing Sperm Whales? Scientists Say Solar Storms Confuse Them

Powerhouse spring storm cranks up to west, but 2 sunny, warm days here
The map above displays a mosaic of watches and warnings for high winds, fire danger (red flag warning), snow and heavy rain. It does not even include the tornado watches and warnings that are likely to blossom later day in the lower Mississippi River valley. (The beige color over us is a special weather statement about enhanced fire danger -- which is also why northern West Virginia is under a more serious red flag warning. On Thursday, that covered much of northern Virginia, too, and there were some sporadic wildfires)This storm system is coming our way. As the low-pressure center tracks to our north, a wall of heavy rain and thunderstorms will push our way ahead of a cold front by late Sunday afternoon into Sunday night. There is a marginal risk of severe storms -- mostly for strong winds -- with a more serious chance in the Carolinas where instability will be stronger. But not today (Friday) or Saturday. These will be sunny, warm days with highs in the 70s to near 80 … [Read more...] about Powerhouse spring storm cranks up to west, but 2 sunny, warm days here
Massive storm spawns tornado in Arkansas, blizzard in Plains
MINNEAPOLIS -- A potent spring storm system that's expected to persist through the weekend raked across the Midwest Friday, spawning at least one tornado in Arkansas as blizzard conditions blanketed much of the Northern Plains. Portions of Nebraska, South Dakota, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan could see close to a foot of snow, the National Weather Service said. A tornado ripped through the tiny Ozark Mountain town of Mountainburg, Arkansas, injuring at least four people and causing widespread damage Friday afternoon. Crawford County Emergency Management Director Brad Thomas said there were at least three entrapments following the twister. He said he did not know the condition of the four people hospitalized. Video from the scene showed uprooted trees, overturned cards, damaged buildings and downed power lines. The huge storm, packing enough energy to cause widespread disruption, isn't unprecedented for April, said Jake Beitlich, a meteorologist with the … [Read more...] about Massive storm spawns tornado in Arkansas, blizzard in Plains
