An extraordinary video showing a toad in a cowboy hat hitching a ride on the back of a turtle has been spreading cheer online. From baby hippos bonding with giraffes to gorillas making grand entrances , there's no end to the appetite for cute animal videos on the internet—and with good reason. Studies have shown that watching animal videos can actually help reduce stress and anxiety. In a 2019 experiment conducted by researchers from the University of Leeds, 19 test subjects were showing images and videos of cute animals over a 30-minute period. Fifteen university students and four members of staff took part in the study, which was conducted during an exams period, when all of those involved would have been under more stress than usual. What they found was that, in each instance, participants experienced a decrease in blood pressure, heart rate and anxiety after watching the 30-minute session. Blood pressure dropped on average from 136/88 to 115/71. Average heart … [Read more...] about Toad in cowboy hat rides turtle around house in bizarre video

This is a carousel. Use Next and Previous buttons to navigate 6 RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — In the Brazilian Amazon these days, it's nearly impossible to run for office talking up the environment. More common is a scene like this: A candidate for Congress parades a helicopter — the symbol of illegal gold mining — painted with the Brazilian flag, through the streets of the Amazon city of Boa Vista. He defends a gold rush that has devastated Indigenous territories and contaminated rivers. In a neighboring state an Indigenous candidate stops wearing green clothing in public out of fear of violence. Like all Brazilians, residents of the vast Amazon region will elect governors and lawmakers in October’s general elections. But as the campaign takes the streets, few candidates or voters are talking about current record-breaking deforestation rates or other environmental problems. Instead, many politicians vie for who has a bolder … [Read more...] about Little talk of rainforest protection in the Brazilian Amazon
LONDON (AP) — Elon Musk caused a stir by tweeting that he was buying the English soccer team Manchester United — whose current owners are opposed by many fans — then saying several hours later that it was a joke. It comes as the billionaire Tesla CEO faces a legal battle in the U.S. after backing out of a deal to buy Twitter for $44 billion. He is a prolific user of the platform, often musing about social issues or joking with his 103 million followers and occasionally getting into trouble with U.S. regulators. Early Wednesday, Musk sent a tweet about his political affiliations and then added in a second tweet: “Also, I’m buying Manchester United ur welcome.” That came as shocking news in the Manchester United world — albeit welcome to many — after nearly a decade of sub-par performances. Asked by a follower whether he was serious, Musk later tweeted, “No, this is a long-running joke on Twitter. I’m not buying any sports teams.” It wasn't Musk's first joke about buying a … [Read more...] about Musk tweet joking about buying Manchester United causes stir
Kate Middleton stunned a train passenger on his way to the Commonwealth Games on Tuesday when he emerged from a trip to the bathroom to see the royal chatting with his young son. The chance meeting came as Kate and Prince William undertook their first official engagement accompanied by Princess Charlotte at the commonwealth sports events on August 2. Matthew Syed, a journalist and former British table tennis champion, wrote of his surreal interaction with the future queen in his sports column for The Times on Wednesday. Syed was traveling with his son Ted to watch the table tennis event at the Commonwealth Games which is being held in the city of Birmingham. The former champion previously won a gold medal at the 2002 games in Manchester. "Five minutes before pulling into Birmingham International for the NEC [arena] I use the bathroom (we are traveling first class) as Ted waits outside," he wrote. "As I am doing my thing, I hear him talking to a woman in the vestibule. … [Read more...] about Kate shocks train passenger by chatting to child on way to sports event
Doctored photos and film are a regular source of misinformation, whether it be celebrity gossip or political attacks. Vice President Kamala Harris is no new victim to this type of misinformation; comments she made about her pronouns at a recent White House event were pulled far out of context to enrage right-wing critics. It now appears that an interview with the vice president on CNN has been, rather professionally, repurposed to vulgar effect. The Claim A tweet posted on August 15, 2022, shows Kamala Harris talking at what looks like a CNN event with the question "Should women give h*** to get ahead?" displayed on screen. The tweet (archived here ) has received more thank 40,000 interactions and more than 1.7 million views as of Wednesday, August 17. During the clip, sections of Harris' speech are carefully censored to make it sound as if she is taking about oral sex. The footage was also shared on a number of Telegram channels, often presented as a … [Read more...] about Fact Check: Is Kamala Harris’ explicit ‘get ahead’ CNN interview real?
Any time the leaders of India and Pakistan (or China) are slated to attend a regional or multilateral event, the media and strategy community dive headlong into a high-decibel speculation about the possibility of a bilateral meeting. Though not formally confirmed, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit at Samarkand, Uzbekistan in mid-September 2022, when India inter alia is to assume presidency of the organisation as well as host the 2023 summit. The newly minted Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is also expected to attend, triggering another round of ‘talkathon’. A similar speculation had ensued before the SCO summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan (June 13-14 2019) which was attended by Modi and Sharif’s predecessor Imran Khan. No meeting eventually materialised, except for a brief exchange of pleasantries in the delegates’ lounge. That too was disclosed not by India but the Pakistani foreign minister. … [Read more...] about Will PM Modi and Shehbaz Sharif Meet on SCO Sidelines in Samarkand?
House prices in the UK are on average £20,000 more expensive than they were this time last year, despite showing signs that this growth is starting to slow. Average house prices increased by 7.8% in the year from May 2021 to June, according to the Office for National Statistics. This was down from an increase of 12.8% in May 2022. Experts say that a perfect storm is heading for the UK’s property market, a combination of increasing mortgage costs, record inflation levels and the steep cost of living . These factors will all continue to undermine demand levels in the coming months. But over the past 12 months, the story has been one of growth, driven by low property numbers, lots of available capital, low interest rates and a desire to change homes during the pandemic. Average prices increased over the past year to £305,000 in England, £213,000 in Wales, £192,000 in Scotland and £169,000 in Northern Ireland.
